So we know it's Coming Soon (tm).
The question I haven't seen an answer to yet is: What does it *do*?
"Walking in stations," yeah, I got it.
But why? What are we supposed to do in stations? And do we have to?
I don't want to walk around in stations. I have a space ship. I like my space ship. I want to fly it around. Stations are for doing things in that are for the benefit of my space ship. I want to stay with my space ship.
If I wanted to play Let's Walk Around And Stuff, I'd be playing another game. I own a bunch of games that involve walking around and doing various things. I play *this* game because I want to fly around in a space ship doing space ship things.
I fear Incarna. I fear it making me not want to play this game any more - in contrast to a friend of mine, for whom Incarna might make him want to start. I'm not saying Incarna is a threat to the subscription base, I'm saying Incarna worries me and makes me sad.
Do we know what it's actually *about*?

socialise and enjoy the added depth it brings, and no, you don't have to.

And you can. They have said repeatedly it'll be hosted on a different server farm and it'll be optional.

A lot of people (like your pal) will be able to associate better with an avatar than a space ship and it is designed to bring added immersion and also progress CCP's long-term goal of making EvE a rounded Sci-fi simulator.

Edited by: Xyla Kador on 30/07/2010 02:52:09 u can do things like interact with certain NPCs and from what we've seen there will be some black market, less-than-legal things going on that we get to play with
along with that is some stuff to do while being stationed camped or something similar, like going to bars, seeing exotic dancers, and playing little mini games and gambling and stuff
and like mentioned it optional, so everything u can do from the station info and neocomn can stay that way if u please but if u get the feel to get a little immersive u can try meetin ur agent face to face or something hehe

Edited by: Niccolado Starwalker on 30/07/2010 06:26:13 Why do you feel you dont want to play EVE anymore after the launch of Incarna? Its just an addon expansion and does not change anything you have today! You like spaceships only? They fly the darn spaceships only then! You dont have to use Incarna! Theres no need for you to use incarna!
Its an honest thing to not being interested in Incarna. I accept that you do not think you will like it! But what about waiting with your complaints till we know more? After all we dont know much yet about its content!
Also, you might not like Incarna. I am however looking forward to this with extreme impatience! Because in oposite to you I think this might be the foundation to expanding the allready huge New Eden universe! Maybe we soon can start terraforming planets? grow it, populate it and utilize it to the fully! And maybe in time, rage wars too!!!

Jump to lightspeed didnt kill Star Wars Galaxies. massive changes to game mechanics did though.
Expacks didnt kill Dark age of camelot. Massive changes to game mechanics did though.
Pirates of the burning Sea never got an expack. It died from repeated nerfs and mechanical changes.
Adding Avatars to EvE wont matter to those who dont care. To those who do, it will be a great feature. It might get rid of some of the spam in local too. (we can hope) Also, maybe we can walk around in larger ships? Player owned structures? I am looking forward to the bugs. Where I get to run around outside the station in glass floor space. You know its going to happen. |

The question I haven't seen an answer to yet is: What does it *do*? Attract more new customers (teens, sci-fi fans that play Sims, general "Dress-up a Barbie" population) and give a new shiny toy that will become boring after the first week of use to the old hard-core players (like PI). Also, it seems like Incarna is a long time dream of someone high up in the CCP executive dept. Although, to be honest, Incarna has a great potential to be the best thing that happened to an MMO in history by implementing a few out-of-the box ideas. But maybe those ideas are too radical for the fragile MMO world of today, so I won't say anything more on the subject.
But why? Because it would probably bring more money to the developer and "refresh" the player base.
What are we supposed to do in stations? Uhmm... walk? I like the idea of planning fleet engagements in that virtual conference room and the gambling for ISK option. One more thing that it could do is reduce the load on the "space" part of EVE, because I believe that station interiors will be on a separate server cluster. Just imagine all those traders in Jita (or any other major trade hub) on a separate node with "Local" as their only connection to the real cluster. The resources from them could be redistributed to major lag-fest systems in 0.0 and traders would profit from it because their market will run faster.
And do we have to? Well, you don't have to use Incarna, if that's what you're asking. But I'm for the idea that you'll be forced to switch to the station environment (and be transfered to the Incarna node) after you pass the, say, 30min limit of afking/browsing the market. That could be avoided by, for example, changing a ship fit or switching an active ship in your hangar. (Haven't thought of the exact implementation, just throwing an idea.)
I don't want to walk around in stations. You won't have to.
That makes at least two of us
I fear Incarna. I fear it making me not want to play this game any more - in contrast to a friend of mine, for whom Incarna might make him want to start. I'm not saying Incarna is a threat to the subscription base, I'm saying Incarna worries me and makes me sad. I would say, don't fear from something that could bring less lag in the main part of EVE. PI is already implemented on a separate node, so I will assume that it wasn't as much as a feature as it was a test of implementation of a separate node connected to the main EVE universe. Also, one more time, you won't be forced to make a single step in a station and you can continue playing like you used to before Incarna.
Do we know what it's actually *about*? I've thrown some of my thoughts about Incarna in my response. The main idea is reducing the main cluster load and attracting new players (potential PvP victims ) to the game while giving a shiny new toy that have a potential to evolve into something great to the old player base.
Just my 2 cents.

It increases subscriber numbers so CCP can get more money so they can fix fleet lag. Now sit back and enjoy the ride, we're in the best hands ever, in the best virtual world ever.

What does Incarna do?
It puts the "space" part of a space ship game on hold for 18 months.

You can dress up, change your hair, socialise and play one minigame that looks like risk with sci models.
later you will be able to find clothes, make them, own shops and...wait a sec basically incarna is just like this except bleak and black not pink and happy.
Note the hilarious and somewhat scary music video on the plasma screen TV in the corner.

If you've ever tried a 3D chat channel before you know how useless it is. Hell look at other MMOs, the only thing public places where no gameplay goes on are for is to show off your "achievements".
It's a complete waste of effort from CCP, it's not going to bring in new players, it's not going to add any gameplay to existing players.
It's 18 months where they'll need to run on goodwill they don't have.

I foresee a future in EVE where the NAPfest gets worse and regardless of alignments of hostilities, no one fights anymore because opposing fleets are in the stations playing space chess.
BTW, will someone tell those miners to stop mining and builders to stop building? We have too much ore and too many ships, and not enough explody.

Incarna will appeal to some, it wont to others. Personally I think it will be a good addition to EVE. Not every one will agree with that - I recall seeing at least one player post that he should be able to turn off ALL graphics and just fight space battles by the overview because the graphics are just 'fluff'.
Its all relative.

Indeed. There's always the "I don't care how it looks as longs as the stats are superb" people and the "Look is important and adds to the immersion" people. And everything in between that. I don't see why EVE shouldn't cater both sides of that spectrum.

I think it's a cool feature but it doesn't have anything to do with gameplay. Eve-online is first and foremost a "video game" and I think it's absolutely insane to put the majority of your development into something which doesn't involve the "game" part for 18 months.
If they took 50 of those 70 developers and put them to work on iterating their existing content, you know, things like wormholes, faction warefare, lowsec, mining, exploration; then I doubt they'd have a problem. Of course they need to fix the fleet lag first.
To me it's a question of whether or not you think Incarna and walking in stations is cool enough to warrant the actual game being put on halt for 18 months, and in my eyes it's nothing but lunacy.

"Walking in stations" was big news in 2006-2007 when i started my EVE career. I was really looking forward and liked the idea. "in 2007, soon. Next expansion... oh, it's in the next after this one.. oh wait..."
Someone said "it's going to take 5 years". He knew better.

I am really looking forward to incarna, but I ask myself how they will realize it.
The stations are HUUUUGE. I wonder how long it takes to "walk" from the ships dock to the marketplace or to the pub and stuff. It would be so cool if all the stations facilities would actually be there and interactive.
Of course it would not appeal to those "excelsheets in space" guys here.

For part it depends on the engine they are going to use. If it's similar to Fallout (3) than it might be okish. Then again, i totally don't see the added value. You CAN already gamble (eohpoker).
And I think the socializing part of EVE is overrated, sure people talk but guy to the point stuff mainly. I hope you can fight in station though, given the high factor of emo-rage in EVE that could be entertaining.

We wont really be able to 'bond' with those avatars unless they actually do stuff, real stuff integral to gameplay.
I agree that the lack of association with human avatars in Eve is a weakness in terms of immersion. I think it takes a lot more than slapping a 3D environment on top though. Whether or not CCP can do that has yet to be seen.
Most talk about Incarna has been the technical side, thats the easy part. How they intend to integrate it with Eve is something we heard very little about. I don't think bars, clothing and virtual poker will accomplish much.
We need to actually be forced to walk around with those avatars if they are to have any major significance. The more optional it gets, the less purpose it serves.
I'm sure it can be done, Im not so sure CCP is willing to do what it takes.

In theory WiS could expand Eve into a whole new MMO area. However, that would require CCP creating *content* for WiS. Hopefully they can beg/borrow/steal some White Wolf writers.
Or maybe CCP is also creating the Ken & Barbie MMO on the side and Eve WiS is the prototype?

Well what is immersive for one person may not be for another. In one of the demos they showed that offices can be rented and players may gather there. For me, just hanging around in the corp office and talk things through already adds to the immersion. Seeing "people" in 3D instead of an avatar also adds to the richness of my gameplay. Being able to change clothes and look how you want to look, personally I see myself as a person and not as my ship.
Other people only want to kill other people or they find it all useless and a waste of time.
