Technical question, sorry if it's in the wrong place--
I am noticing the I'm getting color banding, or steps or whatever, in the background art when I'm in space, around the clouds and the bright areas. Can someone tell me what to do to make the colors blend smoothly together? Just got a new bigger monitor, an Asus vw266h, and my vid card is a Radeon 5850. Maybe they were there before but I didn't notice.. I don't know... but it's kinda annoying now.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

It was there when I started playing in '05. It has been there through several computer upgrades and still persists now. The only option is to get used to it to be honest.
You stop noticing it after a while.

Never seen any colour banding issues on EVE.
Make sure your "colors" setting in the Windows display settings is set to at least 24-bit or 32-bit (not 16). If you have multiple monitors then this needs to be set individually for each monitor.
Then, make sure you have an appropriate 24 or 32-bit graphics mode selected in the EVE settings. ----- The funny thing about this sentence is that by the time you've finished reading it, it's too late for you to realise it doesn't say anything. |

If you are referring to the strange clipping of light in fog (engine exhausts, clouds and what not) then it's nothing you can do as it's simply a case of bad programming/too much optimising.

I suspect it is.
Those on good quality / high res monitors will notice this. I see it quite a lot and I'm yet to find a way to 'fix' it. I suspect it's how Eve renders internally and there is no way to change it.

I am afraid you might be correct in your assumption.

How about now ? After the "enhancement", it's easiest to see on just about all of the bottom side, that was before too dark to discern normally. Now the other parts where it was easier to view before are too light to notice it.

The colors are not blending smoothly it's like looking at a topographic map

No, we had to enhance the image so others with lousier monitors or less sensitive eyes could see what we mean.
It's not the end of the world, and there certainly are far more visual annoyances, but this is just one that's constantly there while in space.

i have a 40 inch HDTV i use as my monitors, i also have 20-20 vision and i still couldn't see this "color banding" something tells me there is more important things to do in this game then whine about some random crap that you have to enhance to be able to see.
Edit /sigh stupid default char selection is still not working >...> fix the forums plox.

Depending on how you have them setup and/or calibrated, you might not be able to see the banding. I keep my monitors calibrated with a hardware calibrator (hello, prepress geek here) and it pops out plain as day.

Thanks to everyone who responded -- Turns out that I had to calibrate the monitor and fiddle with the gamma/brightness/contrast balances. That eliminated the problem. Its Beautiful out there now!!
