My tips:
1. Get a maelstrom or other BS that you have the skills to fly. Have a friend with you and you can do the sanctums together.
2. Train up t2 guns, and fitting skills so you don't have to use faction mods to t1 fit a faction ship.
3. Get Machariel, fit it something like this(just some quick eft work):

Yes, less tank on it, but you are capstable at 47% so should be able to negate most of the damage with your speed. Also this setup is not expensive, though the ship hull still is. Should tank about 250dps of guristas damagetype, if sitting still.

I've been looking at a similar set-up and it seems to come down to this - Large boost cap stable 400dps guristas tank or XL boost with cap charges 300dps sustained, 500 peak tank. (non faction)
I currently fly a Raven that has a 450-500 dps tank and it is only just enough tank for the harder anoms with lots of jamming, so it looks like I have to go with the XL, even though I prefer cap stable tanks in case of DCs.(non faction).
This doesn't take into account a "speed tank". Does this really work with a Mach doing 600 m/s?

Yes, it absolutely does. A 600 m/s Machariel will take more damage from heavies and lights than it will from cruise and torps.
Also, don't bother getting a Maelstrom if you already have the Machariel. T1 guns are suboptimal but it's not like you're using T2 ammo for ratting anyway, and the Machariel's higher DPS and range bonus will easily make up for lower skills.
The OP's fit is fine, but you should drop a flux coil for a 3rd tracking enhancer. I do sanctums with a 4 slot, T2 tank (2 kin, 1 invuln, 1 LSB II) and no cap mods on my ship, and it's perfectly fine. ________________

XL booster fits, so you might as well. There's no real down side (as long as you remember to switch it off).

My EFT says this is about a 350 dps tank, which I don't see doing the toughest sanctums I mentioned above. So either you are mistaken or I am stupid and going on previous form I have to go with the stupid option. What am I missing? The speed tank I guess - I never thought it would make a 150dps difference? I am going to start with a DCU II in the lows (adds 50 tank dps) cos I'm also chicken when it comes to 750 mil ships! |

Given 6 lows would 4 gyros/2 TEs or 3/3 work better?
My EFT says it is a ~450 DPS tank against "guristas" damage type (86% kinetic, 14% thermal) with 2x Ballistic Deflection II, 1x Invuln II, and 1x Large Shield Booster II.
The speed tank does make a huge difference, considering that the vast majority of the DPS comes from the battleships. To be honest the ship kills NPCs so fast and shrugs off so much damage from the speed that even in difficult sanctums I rarely use the booster.
Forgot to mention - I go with 3 Gyro/3 TE/Nanofiber (wheee). Some people go 4 gyro/3 TE, but 3x TE is definitely worth using on this ship. Lets you take out annoying cruisers much more quickly. ________________
