I remember long ago when I played, the Deimos was universally panned for it's inability to fit a proper setup that would let it be viable for small gang work.. Has this changed any, or am I still better off sticking with the Ishtar?
Granted, my drone skills are 10mil compared to 2mil in Gunnery, but I'm tired of flying the Ishtar.
From what I remember, it should be fitted with a rack of ions, a 1600mm plate and a MWD, right?
tl;dr, Deimos worth flying, if so, what setup? --------------------------------- But courage which goes against military expediency is stupidity, or, if it is insisted upon by a commander, irresponsibility. -Erwin Rommel |

It's viable for small gangs. As long as your gang has two Guardians. In which case you switch to 800mm plate and neutrons.

Pretty much all the gangs I fly in are all HAC's and Recon ships.. I don't think I've ever even flown with a Guardian in this corp, hah.
So, if I don't have logistics support, it's really not worth flying then? --------------------------------- But courage which goes against military expediency is stupidity, or, if it is insisted upon by a commander, irresponsibility. -Erwin Rommel |

Deimos isn't worth bothering with. Nothing about the ship impresses.

HAC gangs move fast, so drones will only slow you down. And blaster range is too short to make a difference unless you are already on top of the target. So I'd personally go with an Arazu or Lachesis over both the "Diemost" and the Ishtar.
Even if you can't get into blaster range you're still useful with that long point of yours. _______________________

You must operate a range at which you can't avoid nor mitigate damage much, and cannot put on a local tank worth mentioning, especially if you want to keep damage, which is the ship strong point. So pretty much yes, not worth flying without logistics. On the other hand, in presence of logistics, the Deimos small sig + high resists means the Deimos makes a nice damage sponge (also unless enemy gang is overwhelmingly using EM damage the Deimos have much benefits from shield logistics).

Edited by: Sadayiel on 01/08/2010 21:41:12 it's also important the gang fight style. if it's a range one then fit rails for decent range and some dmg if you have a dedicated tackler/warp to zero gang member then full gank it's still viable as you should land almost at firing range.
also you can play with deimos drone bay, sometimes carry 5x ecm drones or shield/armor repair drones can be useful to get an unexpected upper hand, or help a teammate in a oh **** moment.
Either way remember the *Diemost* is lethal with maxed gunnery skills and maybe 2m it's just too low to do something useful there than just a fancy ship with water guns.
Must say i'll go for the full gank with neutrons and 800mm plate but i'm a blaster ***** since 2005
You know what the chain of command is? It's the chain I go get and beat you with 'til you understand who's in ruttin' command here. |

I'd bring a Brutix, Phobos, Arazu, or maybe even an Oneiros if you're feeling saucy.

Alternatively, for a really small gang you can go full-tank on it and lol when enemy gang primaries Deimos and then just... dies

T2 resists give the Deimos a definite edge over a Brutix if you have Logistics around.
About the ONLY place where the Deimos shines is in small gangs with logi support.

Fly Brutixes and Thoraxes a bit and then imagine they cost 100m per hull to lose.
It's better as a blaster platform than either of those boats (falloff bonus for a start) but it's still a blaster platform. They're not especially good guns and they do kind of require you to be in scram/web range which is a really good way to die.
I suppose if you pick your targets really carefully and operate in an area not prone to blobbing and tarps it does give you some nice DPS in a cruiser hull but meh.
You could try skirmish fitting it (Deimosbond kinda fit) but the three mids is somewhat of an impediment for that and it's just not as good as an autocannon boat.
