Edited by: Squat Hardpeck on 11/08/2010 20:22:36 Edit - (Apologies for the lengthy post)
Good afternoon, I've been playing EVE for a couple months or so now, and I've spent most of my time trading, manufacturing, and all that good stuff. I'm looking for a change of pace, as flying the same transport ship, industrial, or in rare cases a freighter can get a tad dull. I've been looking into finding a combat-oriented ship that suits my interest, but with all the choices available, it's difficult to say what type of ship speaks to me the most.
So what I've been doing over the past day or so is attempting to find a good ship that is in-line with my game-playing philosophies. Ones which I utilize in other teamwork or strategic-based games I presently enjoy, such as TF2, Battlefield 2, and Supreme Commander. If that makes any sense to you.
Team Fortress 2 Gaming Philosophy:
TF2 is a class-based team-oriented shooter and I spend most of my time playing classes that are on the front lines or flanking maneuvers. In regards to health and protection, I play medium-heavy classes which have enough health to survive a few hits, but aren't full-fledged tanks. Rare that I am primary target unless I choose to be. I like going into the fray, causing as much damage and disarray as possible, and making a clean getaway as fast as possible. It's more enjoyable when I'm outnumbered 2 to 1 or 3 to 1. I tend to not rely on support classes to make headway. I don't particularly enjoy engaging my targets from a distance, or attempting to stealthily evade the enemy until I'm in their territory to engage them.
Possible ships in line with this philosophy:
- MWD-based ships with close-ranged weaponry
Battlefield 2 Gaming Philosophy:
Battlefield 2 is similar to TF2 except players can pilot modern vehicles such as tanks, jets, and helicopters. Similar to TF2, I also enjoy getting in the thick of it and cause as much destruction as possible. Although I tend to avoid the front-line slaughterhouse and instead go on minor flanking maneuvers. I don't trudge around the entire length of the map just so I can hit them in the back either. As for vehicles, I tend to pilot the fast-moving and destructive chopper, or the durable, yet powerful tank.
Possible ships in line with this philosophy:
- "Flanking" or fast moving ships capable of high damage
Strategy Gaming Philosophy: For strategy games, I like to turtle up until such time the proper opportunity presents itself when I can effectively hit the enemy hard. I enjoy the creeping advance. A strategy which sacrifices momentum for durability and staying power. I then open up on all fronts causing as much damage as possible. This is different philosophy than the ones I utilize in the two previous games.
Possible ships in line with this philosophy:
- Damage-capable (Break that tank!)
I was hoping that you could provide a little input and recommend a specific ship or ship type that may pique my interest a bit. I understand there's no better way of knowing what you like than just buying the ship and going to town, but a little direction never hurt anybody.
TL;DR - Fast ships that cause a ton of death and destruction!

Forget what you know about classes in other games, it simply does not translate to eve PVP.
I looked at the tldr. You don't mention if you are solo or not but essentially you want Minmatar ships that are fast and fight in falloff. For frigs there's the Rifter or Dramiel but you are probably wanting something bigger. If so, look at fittings for a shield Rupture, 'nano' Hurricane, Vagabond and if you have the ISK the Cynabal. If you want bigger there's the Tempest and Machariel to look into as well.
~ One million alts cant be wrong.

That's... possibly too much information. But based on the first two basic "philosophies" you will indeed want to see what you can do with Rifter/Thrasher/Jaguar/Wolf/Vagabond/Hurricane/Tempest/Sleipnir. But -- with the exception of the Rifter and Wolf -- don't armor tank them; that would be antithetical to the whole "speed" thing.
For the third, though, I think you're either looking at something like a Dominix or something in the Amarr line (probably Harbinger and your choice of battleship). You could also take a look at the various command ship options, though that's a long training investment. And obviously going this route biases you more towards gangs whereas the former can do without as many people.
Hopefully that at least rules some things out....

Kinda getting the feeling of a vagabond with maybe a taste of hurricane. Im also feeling you would love a gankgeddon.
All in all you should probably fly minmatar. |

Thanks for the ideas and contributions guys. I figured this was an odd way of selecting a ship, but I figured may as well just roll with it.
I'll definitely look into the ships you've recommended.
Appreciate it.

If that's your philosophy, then I'd recommend a Dramiel/Cynabal for PvP or a Nightmare for PvE.

In addition to the ships suggested thus far, I would recommend trying armored hac gang warfare. Now this tactic is only used in great success with reasonable numbers (30+) with good gaurdian support. You get to play it like a medium to high dps ship with a medic when you need it.
You never said explicitly whether or not you are solo so again, the minmatar ships are wonderful for both the smaller and larger gangs, but for a completely different feel yet similar style armored hacs are good fun =)

Yep, the only "philosophy" that translates to eve is zerg rush. So blob up.

everyone who has ever played bf2 knows the medic is the best kit, so i would say go for logistics, either the oneiros or scimitar
