So I am thinking about putting up a pos in an unclaimed quiet system of 0.0. Just a place for a small corp to use as a stageing/headquarters to do ratting and anoms in the local area. I dont have much experience with 0.0 life, politics, and such. Can anybody help give me an idea of how long I can expect it to survive before getting it blown up?

Hmm... anywhere between 2 sec. to 32 days. Thats quite a range. Perhaps I should ask what kind of fleet power it would take to take down a large pos. That might give me a better idea of what to expect and plan for.

Most 0.0 Alliances and even some that arent can easily get 50+ dreads, so you'd count it in minutes :)
Even if they cba doing that, your going to get ganked to hell and back moving around. Once they get bored of doing that they might just send a 20 man BS gang with an hour to spare to down your POS.
Unless you have status with the alliance in the system or around it, its a waste of ISK.
On the otherhand you might last a month before someone can be arsed, who knows eve is a game of chance, live it :)_

Less than the locals will be able to field on a whim.

assuming you dont claim sov. it depends on a lot of factors. you may get away with it for a few days to a few months depending on your activity and the alliance that claims the space. If you claim sov. a lot less.
Just because a space appears unclaimed on a map doesnt mean it is and no one will care if you go running around ratting in it and throwing up POSes. 0.0 Alliances dont claim every system in ta region but DO claim the entire region. It is silly to claim systems and pay maintance on them if you dont have too.
Once its discovered it will more than likely be removed or at best you will be hunted like fish in a barrel.
TDLR version: Your probably not going to make enough money in 0.0 to cover losses of the POS and ships little lone any profit. Its better to rent 0.0 space through the proper political channels or join an alliance with 0.0 access. Unless you can take your own space.

Theres alotta factors to take into account. Where are you going to live, who are your neighbors, how far away are they and whats their temperment.Then theres the POS, what size/type, are you setting it up purely defensively, or are you planning to put science & industry mods up? Then theres the whole activity thing, how many active pilots are you going to have, how many npc's are you going to kill per day, as you may attract the attention of people using the star map to find targets.
Also you should really make sure that its not 'claimed' by a larger group, as just because it doesnt have sov, doesnt mean its not considered a part of someone else's space.
As for how your POS will fair during an attack, thats largely dependent on the type of tower & what its fitted with, a stealth bomber can reinforce a small pos, a ****yly fit large tower can be taken down by a couple of dreads; or a proper fit pos can **** a BS fleet or drop 2 or 3 dreads. But I would wager it will have more to do with how bored your neighbors are or how annoying you guys are. Please resize image to a maximum of 400 x 120, not exceeding 24000 bytes. /confirming taking down a tower is indeed not much work in 0.0. Your looking at 1 siege mode or less if they bring caps. and not even a death star will save you. BS/BC fleets can number in the hundreds.

A much better idea would be to simply join a 0.0 alliance. If you wanted to do research/mass production you could setup a POS on an unclaimed moon (and also passive moon mine some low end stuff for a lil help on the fuel costs). Once in an alliance you can just dock at the outposts.
Other option: Do this in a Wormhole instead. Now that IS a reasonable option =) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CAPSLOCK, BECAUSE SOMETIMES REGULAR FONT JUST, ISN'T, GOOD ENOUGH. |

This. Especially a Class 1-3 where capitals are not allowed, fleet sizes are limited, and ways back to empire are plentiful.

We are a corporation in mass-effect alliance, Currently our Systems Sovs have been taken over and other corporations have bailed. But theres usually about 5 People from our corporation at our system usually 1 or 2 and we have lasted 1 Month So Far

and that would be good, also Capitals spawn 6 additional BS in WH Complexes, and WH Complex running is that everyone should have a decent tank and be ready to warp out if there is no spider/cap RR going on. WH are safer in terms of players, but are alot harder to kill NPC's

Just go and ask for renting a system. Then you are safe, if you pay your rent and you can do everything you want.
Better join a corp and ask for permission to setup a pos.

This is only true in Class 5-6. Extra BS's will not spawn in wh class's 1-3. (I'm not sure about class 4's but I suspect not)
