Let's assume you are committed to having a money-maker alt for the very beginning. It does not matter how soon the alt will make it's peak ISK.
Is it safe to say that a datacore alt will be better tailored to the *afk* EVE player (to include the much much lesser income), while a miner character will provide very husky ISK but with the burden of much greater empty log-in time and the need for a corporation's and/or stranger's support?

Dunno about this nowadays. When I used to farm datacores I made poo piles of isk. Now? I'm, not sure. I'd say if you do your research that a datacore farming alt would be easier and less annoying than a mining alt.
That being said, there's tons of hulk toons for sale in the character bazaar so what do i know?

datacore farming is better in the long run, IMO. Mining is only really profitable in high risk areas. And AFK mining in these areas is a baaaaaaaadddd idea. In order to safely mine semi-AFK, you need to find a nice quiet high sec system and mine plagioclase. At this point, however, datacore farming alts start to produce the same amount of ISK as a mining alt - except they only need to be harvested periodically. ----------

I have to presume you are not a mission runner, because if you are you shouldn't be asking the question, and you don't need a alt. But for newer players....
You need to raise your faction with the corp you wish to research with and if you are already doing missions nothing really changes except maybe who the agent is for a week or 2 and after that you have free ISK.
If you are PvP'r and can get to high-sec then once again you don't need a alt, just run the missions and setup a high-sec clone and you once again get free isk.
Mining really is a time burner. If you are willing to spend lots of time for small profits then go for it, an the more alts you have doing it the more you get. don't forget you then have to sell the minerals so there is no instant return.
And if you have access to 0.0 then then rat and run data cores if you wish, and mine only if you like to do that sort of thing.

Your datacore alt will be making about 100M ISK/month within three months of starting training, assuming you can supply +5 implants and are prepared to spend some time running missions for the appropriate corporations.
Getting the datacores will take about half an hour every month.

Datacore farming works well (for now) if you take long breaks from Eve.
Not sure why they haven't bothered fixing that... really devalues it for people who actually pay to play the game.

Words of wisdom.
Mining is dead, datacore farming is better but getting a character in a renter alliance and ratting is even better. If you can stand raising your standing, have the skills trained and really want passive ISK then research is better, otherwise don't do either.

I found a use for a mining alt recently, and that is if you got a corp that has someone that has good production skills and lot's of BPC's you can usually get ships cheaper than the marketprice.
I'm pvp/pve'er and doing it now to get my first Battleship. So that is one situation where a mining alt can come in handy.

What's stopping you from setting up the datacore farming alt and then when it's at peak performance, using it to mine as well?

Yes I'm doing that as well. I have a miner/R+D/manufacturer alt that got her standings boosted by my combat character.
Still the income is still just a few million a day, you can mine that in less than an hour if your miner can operate a Hulk.
Datacore farming really isn't that profitable and definitely not an alternative for mining.

You will need alot of 10 mill skill books to do data core farming. Once you cap out and are farming from Lv. 4 agents its profitable but it will take time, ISK and patience. |

datacore alt
3 months grind then you have passive income until you quit eve. Mining alt means youll actually have to log in and mine (heaven forbid logging in) Once you've got the 3 months grind over with on your datacore alt you can then train that alt in any direction you wish, even into mining.

You could do both easily.

Yes you could do both. In my opinion it makes more sense to start with the datacore alt and once its maxed at 6 rsds then start doing boring mining bits and bobs
