I was just sat in my favourite thinking place last night wondering what I want for christmas. I know I'll get socks and the usual crap but I was thinking wouldn't it be great if I could have a lifetime subscription to Eve? This got me thinking further about the viability for CCP and I've come up with the following.. (please remember all facts and figures are indeed pulled right out of my backside as I've no idea on trends etc)
1. I think the the amount of time people will play eve for is based on a bell curve. Right in the middle of the curve is 18 months. This means the most amount of people will leave after 18 months playing. 2. I am guessing based on this the amount of people playing eve after 3 years will be around 0.5%. 1 in 200 people playing eve will still play after 3 years. 3. I think the number of people who have played more than 3 years will not be very active, but still come on every so often.
With CCP releasing new stuff which requires more skill points to use I think there will be a time when CCP releases something (titans? Jove stuff?) and virtually no-one will be able to use that stuff. Ever. This is because the amount of skills required to use that stuff will require players to have played at least 3 years. I'm not saying this is happening now, but I predict it will happen in the future.
So this got me thinking, 'Well if people need to invest 3 years+ in a game they really enjoy, then let them have lifetime membership!'. So what I'm thinking now is CCP should offer a lifetime membership subscription for the cost of 24 months normal subscription.
1. This will increase the retention of players who would otherwise leave once they feel the cost of the game outweighs the enjoyment they receive. 2. This will provide CCP will more money up front to invest in hardware, staff, marketing etc to encourage more players to play what I consider the most well rounded and best MMORPG on the market. 3. CCP will actually benefit due to most people leaving after 18 months anyway. 4. Players who have lifetime membership would be immune to the regular subscription increases.
What do you think of the crazy idea? Would you buy one if it was offered? I think I would.

It's a cool idea but not economically feasible. It would have to be more than 24 months cost and the way the economy is at the moment not many can come up with that much at one time. If there were very many that did do it CCP would lose out on alot of funds that would be needed to keep the game going and it would then end. WE DON'T want that. Also you are forgetting that by the time the Jove and Titan stuff is in game there will be the +7 implants and the booster drugs so ppl will be able to train up pretty fast but will have to be more specialized then we are today.
Sorry to shoot down the idea, cuz I do like it, just can't afford it.

This is an interesting idea, but it could not happen. The reason is that CCP would not be able to commit to a 'lifetime' membership as it would be open ended. This would raise legal issues if CCP ever decided that the life of EVE had run itself to it's conclusion and they wanted to finish the game.
Your reasoning on the idea Kerosene is however sound, and I agree with your estimates of 'playability time' and the problems with skill point requirements.
I suspect and hope that EVE will run for several years, but you just cant guarantee that, anything could happen.... CCP could come up with an even better idea and swap their resourses to the new game.

hey with lifetime could aswell meant eve-life time :D
just like with most lifetime phone accounts, they just mean as long, as the company is still alive ;)
anyway, would like to see some serius discount on real long term membership, like take 5 years for the price of 3 ;)

When CCP decides that they're gunna unplug Eve permenantly within about 6 months, I could see them offering lifetime accounts for the price of 24 months.

While it may not be a lifetime account, you can purchase EVE Time Codes in blocks ranging from 30, 90, 180, and 365 days. Log in to "My Account", then select Account Services and EVE Time Codes.
Some really cool things about the EVE Time Codes, you can give them to family or friends that play EVE (Last minute Christmas gifts, anyone?) and they are secure. You give the person (or yourself) the code, they input it and bingo! Account active for the length of the ETC.
Lifetime accounts, I honestly do not see that being offered in the future, but who knows. Stranger things have happened.
Now who put that snow machine in the suspended animation chambers???

Don't worry, CCP isn't like EA who got rid of your precious E&B. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

One of my favorite magazines has a lifetime subscription. It costs the equivilent to a 6-ish year subscription, that would be around 750USD for eve. The fine print is that refunds are pro-rated for the first 2 years only. http://www.dirtragmag.com

Yeah. I doubt they'll unplug EVE until they've written something "better" to replace it, as CCP are a one product company AFAIK. So as long as CCP stay in business, EVE will stay in business.
I'd love to know if there are any plans at CCP (informal or otherwise) for the next big thing...
