I was becoming a little disillusioned with gaming. I'd played Half Life and thought it was great. I'd played Deus Ex and loved it. I'd always despised role-playing games a little - anything with a generic orc, dwarf, or elf in it leaves me cold and don't get me started on names with apostrophes in them for no apparent reason. Tolkien wrote the book, everything else is a pale imitation as far as I'm concerned. Then I played Knights of the Old Republic and really enjoyed it - these roleplaying-type games are not so bad if they avoid the fantasy clichÚs that I detest so much.
There seemed to be a dry spell. Waiting for Doom 3 and Half Life 2 as they slipped and slipped. You can have too much anticipation: you look forward to something, your appetite is whetted, but after a long time in waiting, you start to lose interest and become convinced that the things that you have waited for so long will just be a disappointment anyway.
I began longing for Elite. I was thinking that you could do a really great job on Elite these days. Then I saw it: Elite 4 - Braben Speaks! PC Gamer (UK) had an interview with David Braben about his plans for a new Elite. I read the interview, and got a little excited, but then the realisation set in that this game would be a long time in coming too. I flicked through the rest of the magazine and read a little article about Eve. "Hmm. This sounds like an MMO version of Elite. I'll have to have a look at that." I thought. My expectations were low, and I had a mild horror of online gaming prompted by my experiences with occasionally playing FPS online - the cheating, hacking, and let's not even start on the l33t-speaking 12 year olds. I tried Eve and found lots of complexity. I like a steep learning curve. I like a challenge. I haven't looked back.
What about Doom 3 and Half Life 2? Apparently they eventually were released and quite a few people liked them. Haven't tried them myself.

well, one because it was cheaper, you didnt have to buy the game at the sotre for like 50 bucks, another because there is always a trial somewhere that you can play for 14 days and get a feel of the game, lastly beacuse it is much different than any other MMOG's out there (\_/) (O.o) (> <) This is Bunny. Copy Bunny into your signature to help him on his way to world domination. |

Though another MMORPG that was GREAT, best I've played in fact, called Jumpgate, everyone said "ohh, eve's just a PaC game, it's crap, no fun! But the graphics are nice!" or "Eve is a waste of time". Now, knowing me, I take people saying things like that, and by nature try the game out :) I liked it.. Kinda getting slow and boring now, but that's ok.

Edited by: Kalric on 24/12/2004 01:50:33 My doctor put me on sleeping pills which caused mild amnesia...the next morning when I woke up I had an account, a "Welcome to Eve" e-mail from CCP and a charge on my credit card.
I STILL can't remember how I cancel this damned acct.

I got the right to reply even when im drunk.
Tis only one ^^^^^^^ reason, a'la elite.
David 'lord braben couldn't get of his rear behind and 'just do it' so we got the fantabulious 'massively mulitiplayer' elite.
Forget the nostalgia and the targoids, this ^^^^ is better than any of that ^^^^ ------------------------
