Edited by: Stick Cult on 18/08/2010 22:02:36 You now realize they don't even run it from command line but from an external controller, and it would be absolutely useless without it.
edit: although it wouldn't take much effort to make something that prints that nice CCP logo to screen though, get started!

They could totally take that and turn it into a useable console app! :P
I could play at work all day and it would look just like I was working on something uber important at work :P

A command line eve client would be pretty sweet.
But I think the most remarkable part of the thin client and associated blog post is the fact that eve has been in development for 8 years without serious automated testing?

That's what a test server is for, get people to play on the test server and some QA people. A lot of MMOs don't have much in the way of load testing b/c there's no time/budget for building something like that, so load testing doesn't really happen till things hit live lol. Just look at how WoW, EQ2, and other MMOs crumble at a decent load when new stuff is released WoW was just absolutely awful for stability when WoTLK was released.
Good to see they developed something to simulate a load though.

Would be a great start to a good linux client :)
Would be awesome to be able to ssh into an eve client from my phone for managing orders, manufacturing, etc...

In all seriousness, We do need a "text mode" version of the eve client.
Not everyone is able to re-download 5gb of what is pretty much the same data every so often (as I often have to do because I run through wine and sometimes the patch goes fubar).

Yes. Lets give bot users a much lower startup cost in hardware and average users the ability to macro.

Giving bots the ability to run 5 clients on one machine? Sounds good to me. Though tbh that'd be a stupid reason to not release it...

I have haxored the CCP servers and obtained the source code for the new Eve Online Slim Client. Pics or it didn't happen you say? BEHOLD! The first public screen cap of the slim client!
Fake edit: Oh hi Cat, I think this is what you were looking for :P no I didn't actually make this and can take no credit for it, brilliant foreshadowing of a slim client from years ago, props to whoever took the time to make it.

Does the repair tool not work under Wine?

To be exact, wat you linked to is an ascii gui client which takes less memory (due to the lack of asset loading I assume) which is not what our thin clients are. Nice try though

In all honesty, the graphics are eye candy.
I kind of imagine a text client that has streaming text, something that only a player could understand. Would look like a monitor in The Matrix.

Yes, it works.
But then it has to download the fubared files, many of which are rather large.
It just ends up quicker to reinstall and try patching again. Originally by: CCP Atropos

GO GO Google docs! They already use chrome for the internal browser, so adding the google docs spreadsheet should be nice and easy
