so... gamecon is this gaming expo and it opened its doors a couple of days ago.
CCP has a booth. it consists of a flatscreen showing the dominion trailer, 4 employees with alcohol on their breath and a crotch-high "desk" with a laptop running eve (a starter char orbiting rens VI-8 in a reaper - no isk to transfer behind their backs ).
technically there's a conference table inside, but despite the deafening noise from surrounding booths - drowning any hard questions a bittervet might have - going inside was not an option (not even sure it would've helped, tbh). seems it was "reserved" for appointments (whatever that requires, considering there's a large business area in another building)
alas, Zulu would have made an appearance today - friday - so the only CCP-guy's name i could get a hold of in between subwoofer spikes was Navigator, an adorable chap from scotland. Too bad i was intercepted by his colleagues before we could engage in semi-serious discussion
anyways.... i, too, have to disappoint: noise&alcohol thwarted any consistent discussion. being 200cm among 170cm dwarfs did not help either. nor is there anything to report: basically one was referred to the upcoming dev blogs. reciting memoirs of a bug reporter led to instructions of how to send a mail to a senior BH. the words "scrum" a "scaling" and "cluster" came up a lot, preferably in close proximity to each other. also; rockets are not a bug per se - very eager to point out. not sure if he meant that it's therefore not that important to "fix" and :17months: and stuff *shrug*
Later, while having a smoke outside after their shift was over, Navigator tried to convince us that dr.caymus skilled amarr BS because of the geddon as it has eight turret slots contrary to the apoc's seven. pointing out the rof bonus and drone bay could not bring him around. nor did the other three blackly-clad have anything to say...
so... if you're going to visit, don't do it for CCP. i'm not trying to sabotage that operation; it's just that it's... underwhelming. my generally upbeat eve acquaintances (from holland, to boot) later said they were deeply disappointed. spinning it into some proof for the focus CCP has on improving the game rather than showing off on expos did not do the trick.
they do hand out an eve mousepad or an EON though - but only if you're a player. many adolescent opportunity seekers left empty-handed. kinda surprised me as i was under the impression that retaining (year-long) customers was less important than acquiring new ones.

The PVP side of eve has been neglected for a long long time now and with the lagmoster it just not duable anymore for the long term players aka pvp'rs. If u find me 10 people that only play eve everyday to run missions without a pvp alt i personaly give u 100 mil. I know alot of people that really enjoyed pvp that quit the game or simply dont undock anymore but just chat in corp. People can not be botherd to undock anymore.
I even doubt if CCP devs even play the game or pvp. I know some (1 or 2) do but i have strong doubts about the rest. Ask yourselve what new players attracks to the game, its PVE. But ccp forgets that it is PVP that attaches people for a long term to the game. That is what CCP's future problem is. They will probaly see a spike after each patch but a bigger spike downwards after a month or 2 when the new players are done & bored with PVE.
Lack of vision and current state of eve marketing policy and communication towards the even players past 2 months and futher back really makes me wonder what their PR/Marketing department is doing, serious its time to sack people.
On the other side, it are the new players that bring in the cash for ccp. Most vets have market alts and buy plexes, so it isnt that bad $ wise, buy hey, who cares about the long term players amirite?

100 mil for 10 people who dont PVP at all, on any character. I think I can do that. Can reel off four right now just in my own contacts list. Can't take me long to find another six. I dont think you mean this though. I'll contact you in game about it. |

Here ya go. A few more than 10 because more people replied whilst I was asking. But here you go:
Telria Wintara Amerin Derzane Drahkesh Advent One Fabrica Steelfist Demogron AlleyRat Mosnyf Starrunner Mrs Mos (^ his wife I think) Marcus McTavish
Those people "don't pvp" (edit: even on alts). 100 mil please good sir, unless you intend to dishonour your wager? |

In order for pvp to be really viable, besides reducing lag they would have to over all the inter-system transportation. The current gate system of choke points everywhere leads to nothing but boring gate-camping pvp instead of fun open pvp.

I can haz 100M also? I've never taken a shot at another player in EVE. Granted this char (my only one) is new, but I played for a few years and quit sometime around Red Moon Rising.

If they had a big ass booth drawing an amazing crowd you'd probably be crying that they were drawing in so many new players to a broken game instead of fixing it.

Damn why didnŠt I read this post earlier...
Main reason for visiting Gamescom was CCPs booth. CCP there: Fail
We arrived at the stand, the trailer was running on a flatscreen, one of them asked us if we ever heard of eve. We answered yes, playin since 2006, they were like: "okay, cool, so we donŠt have anything to tell you, just keep on playing!". That was our discussion about eve. Few hours later after playing GW2 and watching some amazing SC2 matches we decided to go for CCP again to maybe get some information about upcoming patches or addons or even incarna. "No, just what you can find online on our homepage"
Then we asked if they have some Items of the EVE-Store we can BUY maybe. He gave me EON #19 and my mate got #20. That was all...
In addition I have to read something like this now:
Quote: PAX Prime 2010 will take place from September 3rd to 5th, 2010 at the Seattle Convention Center and CCP will be rocking Booth #1332 with exciting news, announcements, and some amazing prizes up for grabs! You wonÆt want to miss the new trailer that weÆll be revealing during the event, so stop by to chat and bring friends for a demo of EVE Online. Visitors to the booth have a chance of going home with great prizes such as an EVE engraved iPad, 5 EVE-engraved iPod TouchÆs, EVE mousepads, Decals, and various SteelSeries products......
Sorry, but you donŠt want to know what I am thinking right now... we were just dissapointed. We really hope they do a better Job at PAX.

Yeah, the booth was similarly disappointing in 2009 as well. I mean, with the absolutely ear-shattering noise in the halls, nobody expects CCP to hold roundtables or anything, but just gives you the impression that much potential is wasted.
Where's the DUST514 trailer and hands-on demo? Where's the cloth simulation video from the recent devblogs, and other Incarna teasers? Where's the White Wolf swag, the artwork, the books and novels? Heck, something as simple as a poster on the wall listing the more unusual things you can expect in EVE (live-streamed, player-commented PvP tournaments! Market manipulation! Corpse collecting and player cemeteries! Alternative lifestyles, such as Wormhole habitation!) could work.
The CCP booth just screams "Yeah, we make this game, but we really hate having to come here to this con, can't you just go look it up online and leave us alone?"

Yeah, the CCP booth was even worse than 2009.
Last year there were 2 PCs logged in to Sisi and you could have a chat with the GMs and test any ship with their accounts. We got a "no comment" to every interesting question, but it was fun.
This year there was a lousy laptop and the guy standing there wasnŠt very interested in talking with the visitors. At least we got some free copies of E-ON magazine, but the booth was very disappointing.
Come on CCP, if you donŠt want to spend money donŠt make any booth at all. I canŠt imagine that you got even one new customer with this lousy PR.
I really wish CCP would start selling some of the stuff from their store at the GamesCom. Since no one can afford these horrible shipping costs to germany, paying 15Ç for the GamesCom ticket would feel like nothing if we could buy some t-shirts there. IŠd really love to have some EVE merchandising stuff but will never spend more money for shipping than for the actual goods.

Because $1100 will go a long ways in a booth, clearly.
