Edited by: CopyCatz on 21/08/2010 18:18:22 So yesterday I arrived at the Koelner messe for a 2 day stay at the gamescom convention. The first thing I did ofcourse was find the CCP booth in the MMO hall. I read reports about last years presentation, but still it was a shocker to me. A small table with an even smaller laptop (while everyone else is showing off their games on 17 inch alienware machines..). One CCP guy and a visitor hovering over the laptop making impossible for other people to see what they were doing. There was however a larger lcd screen showing the butterfly effect promo. But in general people just walked by, only the occasional "hmm whats that game about". In the back a small shady room where the meetings took place I guess. It made me feel part of some niche game where the incrowd rather doesn't have new people interested in the game. I didn't really feel the need to go talk to the CCP person (they don't look like they want to talk much anyway, plus there wasn't even anything being handed out), but I would like to make some suggestions for next year:
1. Get a bigger booth. Put a display in with ship models. 2. Get more and bigger screens and show gameplay on it! 3. Give out goodies for crying out loud. Even the weirdest korean publishers had dozens of people in front of their booth because good looking ladies were handing out t-shirts and other useless stuff. It's amazing to see what people do there to get an ugly lanyard. 4. Hire nice looking ladies! 5. Hand out t-shirts! 6. Announce something of interest at the convention. A few hundred meters away the Wow boot (about 30 times bigger) had a queue of about 300 people wanting to see a preview of some new expansion. Combine with #5 for maximum queueing.
Yes I am repeating myself but free stuff and girls seem to be the critical factors there to get attention for your products. There were some pretty horrible MMO games that had lots of people just hanging around for freebees.
Eve doesn't deserve this.

So what you are saying is that CCP should have gotten buxom Icelandic beauties with the 4 race's symbols tattooed on their tatties and over 9000 more PVP action on large LCDs ?
Not really a slap in the face, happy they even sent a guy with a laptop to be honest :-)

You were much kinder than he was.
I don't expect them to spend a fortune on their booth, but a little more effort can't hurt. I mean, why even go if you're giving a bad impression? May as well just not attend.

Seems like CCP treats these conventions as some mandatory chore instead of a good marketing opportunity. I don't see what was the point of sending anyone to the convention at all, since they clearly didn't plan on doing or showing anything there anyway.

Supposedly they're debuting some big new trailer at PAX. Maybe they'll make more of a showing there.
Bit worried it'll turn out to be a trailer for Dust instead of Eve though.

Edited by: Stick Cult on 21/08/2010 20:22:51 I, for one, am not insulted. More like I don't care. If going to a games convention and seeing a nice booth is what makes you hear about/want to play a game that's been around for 7 years, it's clearly not for you. I also prefer them to spend money on development, may that be Eve itself, Incarna, or Dust, than on a shiny booth.
edit: Also, for the guy in the other thread complaining that CCP smells like beer... well no ****, they live in Iceland, drinking beer is all they do!

Edited by: John Holt on 21/08/2010 21:15:11 Interesting. I know EVE always has a big booth at GDC each year and they hand out free stuff, including tickets to their party. Guess they didn't see this one as being worthy of a big show. bTW at GDC they had three huge monitors running the game on Singularity, and people demoing the game. I was honored to be invited to demo the game for CCP a couple of years ago. It was a blast.

It seems if they wanted to showcase Eve's PVP circles, they could showcase mostly naked hairy fat old men laughing about raping the last poor guy who walked up to the table... just sayin. Its more like what happens in game.

Im trully stunned. I considered going to this - thank goodness I didnt waste the money; CCP certainly didnt.

I dunno, I think of this more of a 'we don't need to bribe players, our game is good and speaks for itself'
Also, if you don't have anything big to promote I do not see the value of spending a lot of money on a booth. Focusing your spending for when DUST514/Incarna comes out at a big convention instead of some smalltime boring whatever convention sounds like a good plan to me. Sorry CCP didn't spend hundreds of dollars solely because you were there.
Lastly, going to a video game convention to stare obscenely at chicks is really creepy. - It's not "Play through a pre-set story, become stronger, do endgame". Gameplay is open ended, and you make your own story. Unless you're too afraid of 'pvp grief' to do anything relevant |

Thats true, its still a fairly large convention though. A small stand like that probably only cost in the region of $5k for floor space - so its not great shakes.

The pics make it look like a small game publisher just launched and is showing their first product.

I personally don't really care, I just saw this and made my observations, people write that this convention is kind of a big deal or something so I'd expect a bit more flash or at least some of the EVE store merchandise on display, they don't have to give it away but maybe sell it, if they want or not, I can understand not wanting to sell stuff. It is just that the merchandise exists and all so why not show it off, it brings people in, shows them the 'depth' of the game/etc. -------------------------------------------------------------- Fanboys would make great cult members. |
