Allow people a window of 48-72 hours to login, do stuff and not build their avatar. This will be different than building a character that doesn't have market orders, lab jobs, missions, contracts, POS, alliance/corp business etc to deal with.
IF it is login, select character -> You must create an avatar now, that would be a PIA for many people who log in to do stuff 'quick' and get out. Even worse for people who might actually want to play with the settings to figure out how they work and see what is possible, assuming it is done well and meaningful customization will exist. Doubly worse for people with multiple accounts/characters who want to get on to do this and that and have to build avatars for their peeps first.
Maybe just prevent characters that don't build their new avatar to let loose in the stations then after the window is up you require them to make their avatar to get into the game.
Also many people will no doubt have issues with the patch and probably some extended DT/crashes when it goes up. -------------------------------------------------------------- Fanboys would make great cult members. |

The problem is that they are completely replacing the graphics system so having a delay for recreating there avatar would make it a lot more complex. What I would like to see is a stand a lone application that you can use to create your new avatar and then just up load it to the eve servers.
This way it can be released a couple of weeks before the change and we can spend days customising our new avatars ready for the release.
Another option would be to allow us to export our avatars in an encrypted format form the test server and import them in to live. The only reason I say encrypted is so people don't try to manually edit the file, CCP can just check the digital certificate and the encryption to make use its self. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

I imagined a kind of 'generic' amorphous avatar you might get until you design yours OR just have somekind of bridge between the old ones and the new, as I said old ones can't leave their pods until they make a new avatar.
But whatever works to allow people to get in on the game without having to make an avatar for every character before they are allowed to play, even if eve gate opens a way to do market orders/skill training/etc without being 'ingame' so the avatar isn't required to do basic 'in station' stuff.
I like your idea though of letting us make our avatars offline or before the new avatars are put online so we aren't faced with make it now or you can't login to do anything. It would be nice to have plenty of time before it goes up to play around with the avatar though I don't think they'd make an application just for that. -------------------------------------------------------------- Fanboys would make great cult members. |

You'll get an editable mesh. The editor itself will probably be a combination of preset forms with slider-bar customisation and texture customisation for skin/hair etc. This is the logical way to do it.
