I've lived in 0.0 for the last 18 months and been involved in some wars. I very much enjoy the huge brawls, although in my case they have been pretty rare. But off the top of my head I remember:
May 2009 or so, about 350 vs 500, most BS with carrier/dread support and one titan that got killed. I had all graphics setting on low with no brackets and had minimal lag. I remember wondering why all the bitter old vets cried about lag, actually.
Dec 2009 or so, 200 of us vs 180 of them. Moderate lag, only 50 ships out of the 350 that started survived!
Jan 2010 or so, 350 of us vs 150, I experienced little lag but some of my blues said they died before loading grid.
May 2010 or so, my fleet NAPed with some people and tried to brawl it up in a contested system. There were 1100 or so people in local at peak, but thanks to terrible lag and the inherent pussification of all eve players the fleets never actually shot each other and danced around for 2.5 hours before everyone ragequit.
Last month, 50 of us vs 750 or so enemy, they lagged so badly we killed a few and warped off as the server imploded.
I've seen a lot of 200v70 staring contests as well, and more recently the death of all large fleet combat thanks to lag and boredom tactics. The best to me seems like about 100 as most alliances can easily field that many and 100v100 is a great, large scale fight without so much lag or difficulty getting people together.
What about you? What are the biggest/best fights you've been a part of?

900+ in system 2 weeks ago, was on the side of 700 that was entering the target system while the other 200 were camping the gate. The result from jumping in was horrendous. Somehow after taking half a hour to load grid we were still alive, after that the ensuing lag was ROFL quality, you would be burning off the gate and the next moment the game would update your position at 500km off because you got a free mwd ride out there without using any cap. Everything else was just as wtf, modules would cycle without targets, cap boosters were infinite, ghost ships were everywhere.

49-u back when BoB was dissolved. Some days it was awesome with 1400 people in local. Others, it was lagged to death at half of that.

Edited by: Hyveres on 23/08/2010 18:43:28 Was in a few 1200+ pre dominon and lag was there but manageble.
Thing is performance nowadays is random I've seen 200 man fights lag worse than 400 fights but anything above 800 is more or less hopeless. Using manual cycling of guns you might be able to fire every 20-30 sec with guns that normally have a RoF of 7 sec. And lag on warp, movement and targetting is utterly hopeless.
The killer for large scale engagements these days however is not lag, it is black screen of doom, where you sit watching the black screen as your grid or jump loads and 15-30 minutes later(sometimes more) you are in a new clone at your home station without ever seeing what killed you.

Yeah there were many days where 800 was the norm and several fights over 1200 or 1300 in local. The first Delve invasion was crazy, lag was horrible and the game had a lot of random server crashes back then. It seems funny that we all complained how lag always seemed to help BoB and how happy we were several months later when lag started to disappear and fleet fights were fun.
Now a days I would be pretty happy to have the KIA/MC lag we had that christmas back as opposed to the unplayable kind we have today.

This. Biggest battle at the time and one of the biggest yet. Around 1400, 1600 total combatants though it'd be hard to know how many were in the local at most since the node crashed three times. That was way before apocrypha though, lag wasn't much of an issue since node simply crashed when it was starting to become unbearable.
Haven't been to many big fleet fights since then, not anything on that scale anyway. Multiple hundreds of players clashing though is kinda common.

H-W a few months ago. Local peaked at 1800 before the node died, or maybe 1700, don't remember too well.
The node was unplayable, and fortunately it eventually crashed. Especially fortunate for the defenders who just cherrypicked everything from the towers which left reinforced mode during the crash. The moment a few hundred people warped around and started shooting, there was stuck modules over minutes. Warps happened 5 minutes after commands were given, POSes wouldn't load for 30 minutes after you warped into them.
BUT I wouldn't really call H-W an example of bad lag, as fights didn't really happen. Mostly ganks which only require one side shooting.
Better example: A few months before , in F-5 when removing RA from Scalding Pass. During Apocrypha times if I'm not mistaken. What I was told was that the node for the system we expected to fight in was reinforced, but the fight took place in F-5 isntead, which was not reinforced. 1200 people duking it out, all on the same grid on an unreinforced node.
But the interesting part is: We titan bridged on a 600 hostiles' grid, it only took about 10 minutes to load. Nothing crashed, module and warp lag was around a few minutes (which has always been like that). I even managed to turn on brackets to take a few shots with fraps.

+1000 in local fights: 49- when IT/BOB/Kenzoku/No Friends fell, at the time we thought it was very laggy - it was however playable Y-2 fighting against stupid goons, was a turkey shoot. They were there but it was obvious they didnt load as no module activation was evident. Still 200kms in one day. HED Same as above execpt on the recieving end. I suppose this means that CCP will claim that 0.0 combat is fair. J1V Ha- CCP have released another patch and not fixed the issues caused by dominion.

According to gms: 1. Your client has failed to provide you with correct information you were dead before you client passed on packets. 2. Spamming dock/jump causes the client to incorrectly pass on information.
in other words: its your fault for spamming dock/jump that you were killed before your client passed on upto date information and hence causing you to die before you activated any commands.

Graphics are rendered Client side, no information about graphics is transmitted trough the eve server to the client causing lag.
I was in the 700V700 fight when IT invaded h-w lag was the worse i have ever seen in the game.

the most people was the same 1600+ delve battles others have referenced, it wasnt the worst lag tho, not even top 20, but that was pre dominion post dominion there have been several sub 300 battles that were much much worse then those mega battles from delve, hell there are been battles of 70 pilots that were worse then the 1300 pilot battles from a year ago. dominion was a major blow to this game

750 in my system, 700 enemies in the next. Noone dared jump in to the other one. Then as we decided to go back home the node crashed as soon as people started jumping out. Epic.

I stopped fleeting 9 months ago. Its all DOA right now.
- Down side, Ocih was created and skilled for fleet fights. It was to be her niche. - Up side, I can fly every Amarr ship in EvE right now because I dumped my skill lines to fleet pro. |

Back in 2007, when I first started playing Eve, I did missions and empire crap for a bout 3 months, then took the plunge and got into a 0.0 alliance.
One the same day I managed to move my hangar crap to my new home system, I participated in my first ever fleet fight. I was fighting for Bob against Goons, and I didn't even know who either of those was or what it meant. This was down south somewhere, and on our side was about 600 BS with a vrey small number of other support ships. We got bridged into a Goon system using two Titans. This was my first ever fleet fight and to this day I've never been in anything bigger.
Remember, this was back in mid-2007 when having two titans on the field was really special. I had never even seen a carrier before, then suddenly I was in a fight with dozens of carriers, a dozen MOMs, and two titans on our side alone.
Anyway, Goons had about 800 in system when we bridged our fleet in, I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing but it didn't matter. The node went to 100% utilization, I had black screen for 45 minutes until eventually I loaded the grid in a pod. Lag was horrific and at that point I just logged out for good.
For my first fleet fight I had pretty much experienced the very limit of the end-game - masses of capital ships, 1200 players fighting at once, and lag so bad it made every thing else completely irrelevant.
