Pets become family members in time so when the day comes its like receiving the news that your own grandfather died.
I've been through everything from rodents to fish, cats to dogs, to a horse. I think the hardest one was my German Shepard because he was my first dog in the family. He was afflicted with a degenerative nerve disease that is common among them and starting losing the ability to walk with his hind legs. My father tried to keep him going for many years but there came a point when I tried to call him over one day and no matter how hard he tried he just couldn't get up, and the worst part was seeing the pain in his eyes. I had to carry my dog into the vet to have him put down and the whole time he kept trying to stand up for me. Put me out of everything for almost a month which is more than what any family member has ever done. |

thanks for sharing I'm sure it's not easy to think about it again.
same thing happen to our bunny, his back legs stopped working. 1st a year ago he started hopping one foot. then he just crawled around, so we built him a wheel chair. he was pretty happy... but now. yeah. he's been on pain meds for 4 months.
the pain in thier eyes and that they keep trying to make an effort for you is the hardest part : ( http://dl.eve-files.com/media/1206/scimi.jpg |

Have had to put down two cats and lost two more, and the best advice i can give you is this:
There's one baby bunny out there waiting for a home. When you are ready, go find it and make his/her life as good as your old bunny's... that's the best tribute we can pay to those beings we love and which regretfully have a shorter lifespan than ours. We had to have an elderly cat put to sleep half a year ago. There's nothing that can be said to make you feel better about it but what got me through it though was the realization that I was out of options. She couldn't be combed. She couldn't be shaved. She ached all over. She couldn't groom. She was going to be just a tangled up miserable mess. There just wasn't anything else that could be done.
If you went so far as to make a wheelchair for a rabbit, you went as far as you could. Eventually you run out of options and the only thing left to do is put them to sleep. So whenever I see something that reminds me of her, I ask myself "What else could you have done?" The answer is still "Nothing." When you realize you did the only thing you could do, it helps. |

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Pets truly do become part of our family and friends. I dread the day my bestest buddy Jack, a border collie, passes. I already notice he can't jump on the bed and do some of the things he used to do.
The only thing I can recommend is something a vet told me years ago when my orange tabbie Alfie passed away.
After a day or two, start putting away some of your buddie's things, whether it's toys, crate, or whatever. Pick 1 or 2 items to remember them by and place somewhere appropriate, such as a mantle or shelf.
If you leave everthing in place it will pain you every day in every room. If you pick 1 or 2 significant items to cherish them by it makes it more meaningful and allows for less needless pain on your family's part while still remembering their part in your life.
Best wishes to you and yours.

It is pretty crazy that you actually mention this because my parents cat Pepe' had disappeared as well. 2 weeks went by and my stepmother who was pretty saddened by it was getting ready to look at craigslist for another cat when he wandered back. His thigh had a nasty gash in it and it looked like his tail was broken but other than that he seemed to be ok. What is really amazing about this cat is how they got it because they were talking for weeks about getting a cat to help with the mice (country living) and next thing we know this guy is literally on the doorstep. It's perplexing how he got there because of how remote my parents place is. There is no way he could have wandered to their place and I doubt anyone would go that far out of their way to dump a cat, but they found him huddled in a corner during a thunderstorm and took him in and he is everybody's buddy now. He's not so good with the mice thing as he prefers to bring them back alive but luckily we have a dog that has no issue finishing the job. He's really funny though because he likes to run in front of people and flop on his side to get a belly rub. We tell friends that he and gravity don't get along.
In any case don't lose hope yet. Like I said he was gone for 2 full weeks before suddenly showing up again. |

Had a Labrador-Poodle Cross that we adopted from a dogs home in Australia. Her name was Cherry-Pie
She was originally trained in the seeing-eye dog program and didn't make the grade. The people that had her left her in the backyard all the time and neglected her.
When we went to the dogs home looking for a pet we saw her....the damn thing looked so awful, dirty and scruffy i walked right past her. My wife and daughter loved her immediately so we ended up adopting her.
Because i retired young and was home all the time, she ended up becoming my dog. I just had to look at her or snap my fingers and she knew what to do or where to go. I ended up loving her a great deal.
Only downside what that she suffered from epilepsy. Every time she would have a fit, i would grab her and lay her head on my lap, stroke her head and say "it's okay, it's okay" I'd keep petting her until she was able to walk around again.
One day i could see that she was starting to seize and i ran over to her and did what i usually do........she took a breath in, and one out. Then she took one more deep breath in and let it out................that was the last breath she ever took.
The poor girl died right there on my lap with her head in my arms.
I'd have to say that it's in the top three worst days of my life.
It's taken me 2 years, but we have just gotten a little miniature short-haired Dachshund. Now 9 weeks old. She is really something and has brought a lot of joy in our lives again.
I feel deeply for you both and you have my sincere sympathy. |

Every single one of our pets that has passed away, has destroyed me in an unique way. You never really learn to deal with it. The only thing I can recommend is to get a puppy quickly, and spend little time grieving. Losing a pet blows a hole in your soul, and a puppy is wonderful for plugging that gaping cavity with a dumb little bundle of unconditional love.
We recently lost Aga, one of our Dachshunds. I still hate myself for not spending more time at the vet's when she was on her way out. She died alone, and I promised myself I wouldn't let that happen. Regardless, we got a new pup (Doberman this time) and the grief rapidly gave way to happiness, for the most part. It's difficult to mope with that much canine energy around. |

We adopted a greyhound shortly after we got married. We had to have him put down just six years later due to bone cancer eating up his entire left shoulder. We could have had the leg amputed so he could live another year, but for a dog who lived to run, cutting off a leg at 8 years old would mean he'd learn to run again just in time to probably get sick again.
We know he was in pain for at least a month before we found out what was wrong. I'll never forget the look of relief on his face when he was given the shot, like he'd finally stopped hurting. Then he laid down and went to sleep, sighed, and that was it.
Cried like a baby. Then we had to explain to a four year old why his best buddy wasn't coming home. Yeah, that weekend SUCKED. The Skunkworks is recruiting. -áhttps://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=1540711#post1540711 |

My father-in-law is a veterinarian, and of course has dealt with lots of animals reaching the end of their lifespans. He says when an animal gets in a condition where they can't function, the most humane thing is to put them down. He always has clients who want him to do surgery to remove tumors, etc., but he does his best to talk them out of it. Major surgery doesn't work well for animals-- they might live a month or so longer, but they'll be in bad condition. When it's time for them to pass, the best thing is to just let the little guy pass peacefully. A tough thing to do, but it's the most humane thing you can do. |

I feel for you MotherMoon, regardless of the pet you become attached to them. I've kept Rats, Cats, and Fish of various types. Fish are sort of easier to let go of since you don't handle them, but if one of the more characterful ones dies, or gets to the point of needing euthanasia it's not easy, we had 2 cats, one got feline leukaemia, and the other just wandered off one day and never seen again.
Rats are awesome creatures, but they only last a couple of years, and tend to succumb to tumours so that's not a nice ending.
Take a little time, and then consider getting another one, there will be plenty in shelters etc who would appreciate a new home.

I understand the pain and grief of having to let go of such an important individual and family member within your life.
I had three of my dogs pass away in a four month period (old age, cancer, and genetic defect that led to heart failure), then my last one (prior to my current little pup) passed on about a year later (massive heart attack and stroke). Extremely hard to have happen, but a necessary aspect of all of our lives.

My last cat made it to 17 before I had to put him down. He was very independent and spent most of his time outdoors until his last few years, was super territorial and he knew how to put the other animals in their place. He didn't especially like being harassed by people (picked up, petted, whatever) and yet he was always in close proximity a us including when we took the dog for a walk. My favorite thing about him was that he didn't take crap from any animal. A neighbor back in town had a rottie who tried to intimidate Meowie and within 2 weeks of stalking and intense staring that dog became the intimidated. He did the same thing to my grandmothers dog when we took him in after she had passed away. I think Malaki was quite the suitable name for him. I even made a picture of him with my current dog into a demotivational poster. I'm sure the bird and mouse population is still trying to recover from him and the snakes around here probably appreciate not being punching bags anymore. We always joke that the secret to his longevity was due to stealing the lives of cats he beat up because he tempted fate way too many times. I remember one time way back in the day when my father and were going to the reservoir for a day of fishing, and 20 miles from the lake we were doing 55 mph when my dad slammed on the brakes because he witnessed the cat climb up out of the boat and leap from it to the spare tire of the truck. We put in with us, went to the dock, got the boat in the water, and tossed him back in. Seemed right as rain as long as we were there. Not many people who can say they took their cat fishing with them.
RIP Meowie, he was a awesome cat |

I remember when my dog Gizmo had to be put down. He was simply too aggressive and silly and it was decided that it would be best for everyone if he was put down. At the time I lived in a different country than my father and you can bet your rear that I would have made a bigger scene had I been in the same country at the time. However I found that I kept myself preoccupied with music and learning how to play the guitar (a new hobby of mine at the time) and this helped me a lot.

This is just the saddest thread evar
Last pet I had that died was a fish when I was 13, kookaburra got him right out of the pond. He did live in a pond though, so I wasn't all that attached to him.
When I was even younger than that we had a family cat and dog that died at some point, but I don't really remember that now.
Been living out of home for 5 years now, and 2 years ago got this husky/staffordshire cross, he's a great dog if a little too sociable sometimes. Dreading the day when his time comes, hoping to give him the chance to breed at some point so that I can keep a pup and have a sort of living memorial in that line of dogs, theoretically for the rest of my life if I keep breeding the pup I keep. There should be a rather awesome pic here |
