One 'stig' got fired when he damaged a Koenigsegg sports car when he went of the test track.
I really like cars. But like most petrol heads I have not had the chance to go on a race track and hone my skills. I don't even have a car at the moment. Not that I really need one though.

To be honest i cant see the big deal about this. A driver which is wearing a batman costume naming himself The Stig or something while driving cars... But then again I have no interests in cars what-so-ever.

Never knew that was the reason they changed the stig but its lame of the BBC though, if you hammer fast cars around a track enough its inevitable that even the very best driver is going to come off sooner or later.

Reminds me when the masked magician was showing the world the magician's tricks. Until one day he decided that this wasn't enough for him that he wanted to show his face. "Behold I am unmasked"
... crickets ...
Nobody knew who the **** he was, nobody watched in awe, everyone shrugged their shoulders and the world kept turning. Same thing with the Stig... Who, other than the BBC and the Stigs mum gives a ****. Your face is entirely normal... Almost too normal, What do these guys think when they get unmasked? They would have to have glowing red eyes an insane grin and the world most incredible moustache before anyone would take a second look... The stig is unmasked and he looks like my mailman. I've had more interesting revelations in my cornflakes box. |

The entire petrolhead community as known who the stig is for ages. It isn't like they didn't name him on Richard Hammond's HSE accedent report after the dragster crash...
Also, he is only their regular stig. They put other people in the suit for other events, or special cars going around the track.

Everyone had baited breath when Schumacher did his "I am the Stig", and the crowd went wild.
The real Stig.... everyones a spot miffed that he did this, but its a real shame that he didn't retire on TG itself.
Preferably performing stunts aboard Warships d****d in the Union Jack

Primarily because Schumacher didn't do it for money, like Ben just did. He even states the reasons being because he's jealous other people could make money writing books about their experiences on Top Gear. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

Which is fair enough to be honest, Clarkson makes roughly ú1.8m/year while May and Hamster roughly 25k/episode according to my Google-fu, so the Stig getting a slice of the action in this economy while getting paid less....
Well, he didn't go out in the way I wanted and they may wrangle it into a retconned TG chronology, and all will be well. Haruhiists - Overloading Out of Pod discussions since 2007. Haruhiists - Redeclaring open warfare on Out of Pod since 2010. |

Was his contract already up? Because if it wasn't, it certainly won't be renewed now. However, it will be interesting to see how Top Gear react. If I were on the TG team, I can imagine being quite offended by this Ben Collins fellow. It's just impolite, having worked with them and having all been "in on it".
I doubt they'll pull a Perry McCarthy on the carrier, but I hope it will be funny. I like funny.

The original Stig, Perry McCarthy, who wore black not white was sacked because he revealed he was the Stig in his biography, but the current Stig who crashed the Koenigsegg is still the same Stig.
I believe a few people knew his identity but it was kept pretty much under wraps, I found out who it was from a friend who had said his name was listed with the rest of the Top Gear people present at the time of the accident in the documents from the inquiry over the rocket car accident involving Richard Hammond.
I was never really sure though as he has appeared in the show as himself a couple of times usually as one of the drivers in those mad football games they have in small cars.
Either way hes been known as the Stig for some time now.

It just spoils the character. Now we know he's a nobody who is more bothered about making money than keeping the rather awesome show, rather awesome.
On the other hand, I wouldn't be suprised if Top Gear just continued to use The Stig.

Edited by: Vogue on 03/09/2010 12:12:44 It may seem mercenary to make money from a book. But I suppose If you are a very good driver earning X on a car TV show and you are watching presenters who are half as good earning at least ten times more it would rile you.
I don't see that this is bad.

It doesn't matter how good you are; Top Gear wanted to keep the Stig a secret for the entertainment value; this guy ruined that just to make money.
What he should have done is not agreed to a contract that meant he earned less than the others, if that's what he really wanted.
If he was not happy; he should have resigned; and then out of contract revealed that he had been the stig.
Of course, that wouldn't have made the book sell.

Edited by: Muul Udonii on 03/09/2010 12:35:52 Yeah. I'm in full agreement with the BBC, he's broken contract in order to earn more money from the book than he would have earned.
Claiming free speach is just bull****. Should the people that sell nuclear secrets to Iran be let off because they shouldn't be prevented from telling the Iranians anything they want to?
(Ignore the fact that if Iran wants nukes they should be allowed to have them)
Should people not be penalised for leaking exams before the exam date so that people can find out what questions will be asked?
