So I've been playing around with the Star Trek Online demo and I'm enjoying the hell out of it, but I have a few questions for anyone who's bought the game. (btw this is not an EvE vs STO thread).
Is the game content consistent throughout all areas of the game? What I mean is, after the demo does the game content lack? Sort of like AoC where after level 20 there's nothing to do?
Is there boring stuff to do in STO? Or is it all space/ground content? I'd love to do all that science geeky puzzle solving stuff like on many of the TV shows.
How's the player community? Are they talkative and cooperative, or is it a massive online game full of solo players who keep to themselves?
How's the endgame content?
How many ships are their available to fly? And can you walk around in them and interact with stuff?

That doesn't answer anything and I question if you've ever actually played at all.

Edited by: Reiisha on 05/09/2010 16:04:31 Max level in about a week of casual play.
Missions are all almost exactly the same.
No content at all when you get past 45 or so, maybe a little bit. No endgame to speak of. Once you hit max, the only thing you can do is pvp a bit or start a new character, though the latter option means you'll be playing the exact same content again.
You don't get to do any geeky puzzle solving - The entire game is "shoot first ask questions later". But since you kill everything you don't get to ask questions, so it boils down to just shooting lots of stuff and that's it.
It's heavily instanced. You will never, ever be playing with more than ~20 people at a time (stations don't count, those are just social hubs), and even those moments are so rare they might aswell not exist. That, and there's no reason to group. All content in the game is made primarily to be soloable, grouping simply has no point to it.
You can "sort of" make your own ships, and most of the known classes from the series are there, including a few new ones.
Community i can't say now, but you can see that for yourself.
So yeah, it sucks. The previous reply told you everything you need to know.
"If you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all"

Cool, it's still garbage though.

I created a review of the game a LOOONG time ago, when it was brand new and people were crazy enough to buy lifetime.
As usual, like the Emperor himself said "I had foreseen it". Game was, is and at this rate, will always be GARBAGE.
GARBAGE, got it? You can't really be more concise than that. My trial experience for several hours resumes the rest of the game up to this day.
Pure, undisputed, steaming pile of growing, odorous, unhealthy and 100% refined to the worst GARBAGE

PVP means going into a queue for 30 minutes waiting for enough people to join with the same rank. The PVP arena is always a very small grid with nowhere to go.
The missions are pretty much, "fly to XXX system, kill 3 fleets of Y, beam down, kill 30 klingons, rescue 3 scientists, beam up, kill 2 more fleets of Y, mission accomplished".
"Deep space encounters" mean warping into a system with a dozen fleets of Romulan ships or Klingon ships (or whatever other race ships), spaced 20-30km apart, roaming, blind to anything happening more than 10km away.
The entire game has 0 immersion, 0 sandbox, 0 death penalty (at least when I left). I'm not a big MMO player (other than Eve), but I have never seen an MMO with a difficulty slider before...maybe they are out there though?
If it didn't have the Star Trek skin, it wouldn't have the Star Trek Fanbois -- and without them, there wouldn't be any players. But that's okay, 97.5% of the game is meant to play solo.

I played the beta only. It was nice to fly about in a constitution refit ship. But the game had no grand scope at all. It was a space shooter with ground missions. But the ground missions too were just a shooter.
The developers knew that they had made a turkey when they gave you an option for lifetime subscription with an exclusive borg bord role for something like $250.

pretty much this, tbh.
any game that offers lifetime sub's knows the game is dieing or moving over to free to play models.
also, people calling it garbage... My trash can would like to have a word with you, It is very upset that you would compare it to sto. |

As you can see, the people who have played it are overwhelmingly positive.
Now look at what happened when the same studio were announced to be making a Neverwinter MMO.

I did everything sto had to offer in less time than it takes to train battleship V. My most enjoyable time was flying a cruiser called Armageddon armed with nothing but blue turrets and trolling all of the treckies. I was called EVE

It's had alot of changes recently (new ships and outfits added and some new higher level content as well as walking around sections of a ship). Still kinda boring though. I WAS in a fleet there since Beta and stuck it out for a bit. Left the fleet though because it was always the same 5 experienced guys getting together to do the missions that the rest of us didn't have the knowledge or gear to do. Since then I've logged on twice in about 3 months for no more than 2 hours total and only because I was one of the people that got sucked into buying the lifetimer thing.

Pretty environments. Repetitive mission types. (Just add flavor text) Grinding method of crafting. Simplistic controls/interaction. Ship customization is just for looks. Modular design for weapons/gear/gizmos. (But no grid/CPU worries) No death penalties to speak of, really. (unless playing at optional harder difficulties) All engagements happen within 10km, no exceptions. No ship IDs outside ~16km.
Oh yeah, and HEAVILY instanced. Even 'Sector Space is zoned.
Played it for a month, got a Rear Admiral, started another char... Didn't feel it was worth the cost of another month at the time. _______________________________

Edited by: ivar R''dhak on 07/09/2010 08:06:07 Bought the game and had to buy another 60 gametimecode just to be able to activate the whole damn thing. 100 days of STO for me. Weee.
It was actually fun for about a month or two. The space fight part sold me on it and I still miss it. Miles above EVE combat, even when it was repetitive. But so is hitting F1 F2 ... The ground combat is very clunky but one gets used to it. Devs know this very well and are working on it, it¦s gona be better soon.
I liked the standard missions they had great writing, found many nods to TNG and even TOS episodes. Though the vast majority were "we come to shooty". Well the Feds are at war with practically everybody so there¦s at least some method to the madness.
Cryptic has now introduced diplomatic missions and a new separate diplomatic XP tree. Advancing in it gives you mainly the ability to transwarp to other locations than just Earthdock. And the couple of new missions are actually fun too, but they are quickly played and you¦re left with the standard boring non combat missions to advance here.
Crafting is practically nonexistent, you have the option of scanning for anomalies and gather them to upgrade some weapons. But it¦s hardly worth the bother as you advance so quickly through the levels that they are obsolete so fast. Also the differences between standard items and rare/exceptional are so ridiculously minor, it¦s almost an insult to your intelligence. Devs know this and are working on it(tm).
This leaves the ships as the main selling point. As mentioned you level quick thus all the nice shippies become obsolete too. Cryptic is trying to remedy this by adding "refits" of lower tier ships. check this fan made ship tier chart for more info.
The game had to be developed in 18 months, because the former software house fracked it up. It shows. In another year it will be a proper presentable and refined game. If it survives that long. The devs are VERY dedicated but their numbers are rather low. Thus they are very soon going to introduce PLAYER GENERATED CONTENT, they also recently started to release a new episode (mission-tree) about every week. It¦s very well received.
PVP? Didn¦t even try it. Saw no sense in it. I heard the maps are very basic and the combat very rock-paper-scissors.
"Death penalty" was recently added with introducing 3 difficulty settings. Complete waste of time IMHO. The mobs just have more hit points, hit harder and do more and permanent damage at anything above normal. So everything just takes longer, some like it. I didn¦t. At the end I was just wishing the fights to be over quick to read on in the missions. The ground combat part is also practically broken at higher difficulty with certain mobs routinely one shotting you.
Endgame: You get to do daily missions to grind for "high level currency" to buy practically useless exceptionally rare stuff. Meh.
Still a bit jaded on the thing as it seemed so unfinished and the cool stuff is being introduced right after my gametime ran out.
I¦ll definitely be back in 6-12 months when the game is more polished, lots of new content has been added, it has become clear if user gen. content is win or fail and I¦m fed up with EVE again.
Ah righto, the Klingons. Not really worth the bother ATM. They did get some missions but it¦s still nothing to write home about. I made the obligatory DD "hour-glassed" Orion chick but she ended up as dump for all the disruptor weaponry. See her a$$ next year.
