I asked this question on two support forums and both were useless :P. So I thought all those great people over at eve could help me.
Am I right in thinking that a computer with 4 dimms cannot run tri channel?.A perticular computer im interested in buying, comes with 6gb of ram on a motherboard that only has 4 dimms on ever single picture and review ive seen.

What matters is not the number of DIMM sockets, but rather the chipset.
Only Intel X58 chipsets (using LGA1366 Bloomfield CPUs) give you the option of running triple channel. Any other Intel system, and any AMD system, will only give you dual channel. Since you don't specify the mainboard model, I can't tell you more than that.
It's perfectly viable to do 6GB in a dual channel config, by the way - I'm doing this myself. 2x 2GB plus 2x 1GB equals 6GB. It allows me to switch off my pagefile completely and similar shenanigans

Edited by: Sickly Pentioner on 06/09/2010 09:41:11 OMG a reply, I needed an answer to this yesterday but I was too stupid to think of my beloved eve forums.
So it is possible to run tri channel on a 4 dimm motherboard, I really dont understand that. The motherboard in quesiton is the crossfire iv formula btw, and the ram setup they display is 3 X 2gb sticks.
The cpu is a phenom II X6.

That is what they display on their site. It does'nt actually say tri channel but I presumed because it is 6gb that it would be tri channel, learned my lesson there, but from what little I understand about ram configs doesnt using 3 dimms turn it into single channel?

The keyword is called Flex Memory Technology. What it does is allow RAM Modules in matching channels go into multi-channel mode even if there are mismatching modules in other sockets, or some channels are only half populated.
There exist a scant few X58 chipset mainboards with 4 DIMM sockets. Three of those can be used for triple channel mode. If you put something in the fourth, then the first three will still run in triple channel mode, and the fourth will run in single channel mode independently.
However, the board in question here is an AMD 890GX chipset, which does not support triple channel. Instead, what you have here is the classic case of a half-populated dual channel.
DIMM slots 1 and 2 are filled with matching modules; they can engage dual channel mode. DIMM socket 3 has a module, but doesn't have a "partner" in socket 4 to team up with; therefore it must run in single channel mode. Essentially this means that the system you are looking at has 4GB of high-bandwidth memory and an additional 2GB of low-bandwidth memory tacked on.

If you have 3x2GB modules within a X58 chipset, setup properly with 1 Dimm per channel then you will achieve triple channel. Triple channel boards have 6 Dimm slots 1a-1b 2a-2b 3a-3b if you place your ram in slots 1a-2a-3a for example you'll get triple channel.
As previous posters have already posted you can use dual channel if you have no other choice. But rest assured triple channel is wow fast and well worth it over ddr2.

Ya that is where I was confused. I understand how tri channel works and I was sure it only ran on motherboards with 6 dimms, and I also didnt think they would sell a computer with a empty dimm slot :P.

Edited by: Vossejongk on 06/09/2010 10:06:14 Hm, so i have a msi p7n platinum, with 4 slots.
2x2gb of ram. Will it matter if i put them both in the orange slots or in the green slots, or is it better to put them like 1a orange and 2a green ?

Edited by: Sickly Pentioner on 06/09/2010 10:15:07 Edited by: Sickly Pentioner on 06/09/2010 10:13:47 I believe they should be in 1a , 1b as 1a and 2a would activate 2 single channels. I think :P.
Edit: Actually I think it should be, 1a and 2a. I believe activating 2 single channels is what makes it dual channel, or I could be being a ass hat and not have a clue.

Ok ive checked the site again and noticed that is says, Audio Chipset: 7.1 Channel Audio Realtek ALC850. I believe the build in sound on the crosshair is actually a creative x-fi or is this something differant again :P.

Realtek is common intergrated audio in motherboards, mine has it too. I installed a Creative SB X-Fi titanium, but i can't recommend it to anyone. Sound quality is very good but thats about it. Nothing but trouble, installing drivers are a nightmare and forget using a microphone, volume is too low and no way to boost it up (It doesnt even has a "boost mic" option).
Stick with the realtek :) ----------------------------------------------- EVE Gate:

If it says "Realtek ALC850" then it is a Realtek ALC850 and not a Creative X-Fi.
Creative does not supply onboard audio chips, nor do they bundle hardware with mainboards. Genuine Creative X-Fi boards are only available stand-alone.

Edited by: Sickly Pentioner on 06/09/2010 10:35:13 From looking up the mobo it seems to be built in.
Audio SupremeFX X-Fi built-in 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC - EAX Advanced HD 4.0 - X-Fi CMSS-3D - X-Fi Crystalizer - Creative ALchemy - Supports Blu-ray audio layer content protection - Supports 1 Optical S/PDIF out port at back I/O - Supports 1 x S/PDIF out header - Supports Jack-detection, Multi-streaming, Front Panel Jack-retasking
Or does this just use realtek drivers. Ive never done so much thinking in the mornings before :P.
Edit: Or is this a case of, We are using realtek 850 but we have x-fi software?

There is probably a Creative sound card installed in your system :).
For a side note I opened up CPU-Z and looked at the memory tab, said single channel. I changed one from 1B to 2A and now it says dual :) ----------------------------------------------- EVE Gate:

This is neither nor.
The "SupremeFX" X-Fi is a marketing name for the Via VT2020 chip, which includes certain licensed technologies from Creative, but is not in any shape or form a Creative Labs product. Features alone do not make a sound card good, only sound quality does.
And in that regard, the VT2020 is generally considered the poorest onboard solution available today. It is especially bad with inbound signals - i.e. recording or using a microphone. It is however very cheap, which is why you'll often see it on AMD boards, which must remain more affordable than Intel prodcts to be able to compete, since AMD is behind in the performance race.

@ Vossejongk
Coloured dimms are channel dimms so if you have 2x2gb use the same colours :)
Also about your X-FI I also run an X-fi and to solve your mic issues open your creative console
1. go to your mixer
2. put the microphone slider [should be far left] to ZERO
3. put your REC slider [should be far right] on microphone then put it to 100%
Perfect Mic :) with no need to use 20DB boost.
