Since Tomshardware got taken over by BestOfMedia group they seem to have an underlying persuasion towards Intel.

Tom's Hardware was intel/NVIDIA from day one! Now they're even more useless - I'm surprised they still exist

Fair point about their inherent bias but I have always found their component roundup charts pretty helpful when spec'ing new builds over the years.
Also, say what you will about the new owners shadowy overlords, but at least they have done something about the one-paragraph-fifty-five-flash-adverts per page nonsense.

They mentioned DAoC, so it wasn't complete fail.

Depends how "started it all" will be defined. - I'd tell you why but then I'll have to kill you. And to kill you I'd have to log in. And to log in I'd have to stop browsing these forums. Both you and me knows that'll never happen. |

Owkay, so I had a look at that stuff..
..it doesn't mention EVE, it lists Lineage II but not I, and it fails to mention Ragnarok Online - not to mention it forgets to even talk about MUD's (it's just mentioned in relation to the DAoC) and dungeon crawlers.
Pretty fail in many regards. - I'd tell you why but then I'll have to kill you. And to kill you I'd have to log in. And to log in I'd have to stop browsing these forums. Both you and me knows that'll never happen. |

UO started it all in the sense of a modern MMO - sort of. Meridian 59 was the original MMO though, the first step up from MUDS, though no one seems to remember it.
Also, the article was about worlds to explore, not texts to read - MUDS are even more of a niche product than sporks make out of lard at the moment.

It's not there because it's a "20 MMO Universes you should explore" article. And the UO Universe you should explore died a long time ago.

Except for the fact that the world is still going on. I mean really, they just released a new expansion last year. It may not be high up in the food chain anymore but I don't believe there would be any of the MMO's out today if it wasn't for the success that UO had in it's day. I actually finally got around to actually trying it out and played the 2 week demo last month. Sure it isn't the same game as it was back in it's prime, but it is still the successful MMO that is still talked about today.
I do agree with them not mentioning MUDs though. Muds are just a totally different type of game. It is like comparing a Book to a Movie.

Actually no EQ did start it all. the Fantasy MMORPG as you know it today was launched by EQ. EQ took the MMO to the first seeds of mainstream and it was 3D vs Isometric. EQ gets the credit for Starting It All because it was the first MMO to really blow the industry wide open in the North American and EU markets.

EQ was just a stepping stone. A large one, maybe, but still a stepping stone.

EQ may have been the first legit mmo but wow realized that what the masses really wanted was a mindless click fest.

If UO didn't have the success that it did it is doubtful that they would have developed EQ.
Yes, EQ was the first big time successful Graphical Online Multi-player game, but UO proved that those types of games could be successful.
