Originally by: Chase Owens If they try to ransom your pod....tell them you have ****ty implants, and just to kill you. They will let you pay less than cost to replace, and on your way. If they don't honor ransom it hurts them more. If they kill you, they get nothing. They will take your 5-10mil or w/e you can convince them of, and let you go on your way. I've done it before. No corp that asks for ransom wants to take a sec status hit and/or 0isk to kill a pod when they can get 5mil.
It hurts them more how exactly? When you say "fanboi" try to picture a fat man doing burlesque with 2 big ass fans that say CCP on one and HTFU on the other. Because that dude is me. |

I paid ransom once because I was deep into mission running and just didn't want to be bothered.
In fact, i gave them more than what they asked for just so they would leave me the fluck alone.

Never been ransomed. I do however ransom others.. and would say about a third of the time they actually pay. - I'd tell you why but then I'll have to kill you. And to kill you I'd have to log in. And to log in I'd have to stop browsing these forums. Both you and me knows that'll never happen. |

Depends on the amount and on what I have to lose. I once paid 10M to a wormhole gang to let my 120M pod out by doing the "clueless noob" routine. ___________ EVE is dying! Now for real! |

I've only been ransomed once, pre insurance nerf. They already destroyed my Drake for which I was nicely paid. But then they demanded 30 Million for my stupid pod and no implants. I just laughed at them and their tiny e-peens...

It ain't E-peen to ask for a ransom from a pod. Some people have expensive implants and are willing to pay up. Whereas the only thing you can loot from a pod is a corpse and a mail. That said..... corpses can make a decent amount of isk if you know who to sell em to.
Sure, most of the time people won't bother to pay a pod ransom because they don't have any really expensive implants, but there's always the chance at free iskies. *EDIT* And Pirates are nothing if not optimists. ------ "Tell a man there are 300 billion stars in the universe and he'll believe you. I suppose but since there is no guarantee you will be let go why pay? And anyone flying with implants has to understand there is a big chance they will lose them. I know I have lost 4 level 4's a few times over the years...

IMHO the most creative ransom demands I have ever heard of. ;)

What ever happened to the good old days when pirates honored ransoms??? I seem to remember back in 07 youd never have pirates dishonoring their side of the agreement.

Always negotiate with them tho, but don't look like you are stalling for time, they will pop you if they think you are waiting for backup. Ransoms are not always paid with isk, singing on vent, jokes in local, pizza, can be accepted. Just don't go emo, that will only get you killed.
Oh, and it's quite standard to kill the ship, ransom the pod.

You are stupid if you let someone catch your pod outside low sec. And i would assume a ship is way better ransomable, since a pod can be worth anywhere between few 100k and few billion, while for a ship you usually got a good idea.
Also in 2007 it was stupid to pay ransom, it is still the same. Only when someone asks 10M for your pod when your head is filled with HG slaves you should pay, you might just get lucky. But besides that just accept your loss and dont make it worse.

Edited by: Bud Johnson on 18/09/2010 17:33:46 I've only been offered two ransoms. The time i ransomed myself (badger 2 with a buzzard and stacks of t2 mods) for 20 mil i obviously paid and was allowed to go free. The second time it was a bunch of guys who popped my thorax and tried to ransom my pod -with no implants, and worth ~8 mil to replace- for 200mil. Obviously i didn't go for that one and got a ride on the pod express.
Edit: The proper way to ransom oneself = "WAIT!!! ILL PAY!!! 20M!"

Wait, someone accepted a ransom for a hauler?
Whoa. Most people I know pop haulers, no questions asked. And if one actually asked to be let go, it likely means they're hauling something of value. You don't accept a ransom then, you pop them and see what they've got. ------ "Tell a man there are 300 billion stars in the universe and he'll believe you. I've payed a ransom twice. The first time it was on day 12 of me playing, I think I payed about 100k to keep my lofit catalyst. The second time I gave someone a few million not to explode my cruiser (I was in some backwater area and didn't want to have to fly 15 jumps to refit).
I've also ransomed several people before. I remember letting several frigates go for ~100k (I think several times I actually fleeted them after and finished my roam with them). I let a hauler in nullsec go for 50m, I let a few assorted haulers and barges in highsec go for 10-50m (they payed half up front and half upon docking or leaving the system). There were a few others who payed a little too late and got blown up anyway (I refunded them). When I used to be active doing highsec wardecs we'd often collect a few hundred mil when a corp surrendered to us. Our ransoms usually came with an offer to counter dec anyone who decced them in the next few months.
I also remember one of my friends bragging about dishonoring a ransom, I blew him up and gave his loot to the guy who he poped. - - - Dian'h Might - C&Ps resident "internet kleptomaniac" |

Ransomer: "Pay or die!" Ransomee: "Ok, there's the isk. Lemme go." Ransomer: "Pay or die!" Ransomee: "I just paid you but ok, there's the isk. Lemme go, please." Ransomer: "Pay or die!"
Get the idea? So, no, never pay ransoms. If the ransomer was paid, what incentive does he have to stop? None.

My corp rarely offers ransoms, but when we do, we honor it. Then again, we prefer to watch ships splode all over the place.

To answer the OP's question; yes, people pay ransoms.
We always honor ransoms, and I've even seen corpmates return isk they didn't realize they had recieved for one reason or another (pvp can be hectic).
Just a quick glance at our ransom board shows that hundreds of pilots DO pay ransoms.
We usually have little to go on as to how much to ask for, some people seem to be the type to have pirate implants, in which case we can get a hundred million or more. Younger players usually get a 5-10 mil ransom. In any case, if the ransom is too high, but you don't want to get podded, make a quick counter offer. And if you get offered a ransom and are interested in not being sploded/podded, PAY QUICK! Pirates are reasonably paranoid most of the time, and get spooked easily. If you dilly-dally very long, there is a very good chance you'll be squished just to be safe.
Finally, you will NOT get away in your uber fast pod. Smack talk, or swearing at the pirate just doesn't make sense - we know you're probably upset but you just blew up, and nothing you say is going to sound tuff. Your only options are to pay and mitigate the damage done, or refuse and start over. --

paying ransom is a risk vs reward activity, sometimes you will get away with your ship, and sometimes you wont, the best way to handle this is to know who you are being ransomed by, if its a well known pirate corp that has honored them before, odds are they would honor it again as its a good way to make money, more money then you would make off crap loot and dead pods.
If they are Highsec pirates forget it, they want your faction goodness, as they wont bother you if you don't have a good ship worth killing.
if its nullsec forget it as they wont ransom you anyway.

I'll say this, you may get the odd low-sec pirate who doesn't honor ransoms... Maybe 1 in 100 shot. However, out of all the ransoms I have ever offered to people, those that have said that they would pay me after I let them go, has been 100% not honored. (I do this more as a social experiment and from newer players, that are not likely to have that much isk in the first place)
After so many years of pirating, i've just stopped offering ransoms.
Also, if you are offered a ransom and it's too high, negotiate. Most pirates are willing to listen.

A few people have paid before and "pirates" got so excited about it and told the stories so often that they believe it happens all day every day. "Money just rains from the sky in lowsec." But to be honest the last time a ransom was paid was back in 07 or 06 or something.

If the ransom is suitably less than the worth of the implants in your head then go ahead and roll the dice. Just don't get prissed when they pod you anyways after you send the isk. ZOMG!!! |
