I see lots of Eve players at World of Tanks. For those of you've who have been playing WOT, what do you think CCP/the Eve community can learn from the WOT experience?
I see three very compelling features in WOT that is Eve is missing- instant combat (within 2 minutes of logging on), (roughly) balanced 15 on 15 team play and 15 minute maximum scenarios. It's a great experience for those who enjoy PVP and don't want the open ended time commitment of forming an Eve fleet or roaming low sec/0.0 for a fight.
I'd love to see Eve set up an analog to the WOT combat experience, with an easy to reach dedicated combat solar system where you could be sorted into balanced teams (or balanced 1 v.1 combat) and engage in immediate PVP. I think Faction Warfare and Red v. Blue attempt to address this need, but a dedicated system, with an Eve enforced sorting mechanism would be a better alternative.

It was tried by CCP. The playerbase rejected the idea and the server rejected the code, so while easy accessable combat is good, don't expect to get much support for arena type ship combat.

I played WoT for a couple weeks and got bored real quick. Its just a battle grind for XP and ingame cash, which is too much like ratting for me.

Arena combat is already on test server and in wow.. It sucks ass. Where WOT really wins is the fact that it has no lagmonster.

I think the lesson here is that there's gameplay that's good for WOT, and there's other gameplay that's good for EVE.
Oh wait, we already new that... Nevermind.

A few expansions back, around Trinity I believe, they were working on a "Combat Simulator" feature. Parts of it were on SiSi, but not a lot of information was released about it. Eventually it was removed from the test server, and was never seen again. CCP later jokingly commented that the server had "rejected the code" as it would allow people to PvP without risk of loss, and therefore was clearly not EVE-like in any way. -----

I guess, but part of what CCP has tried to do is provide multiple types of game play in one game universe (PVP,Missions,Alliance-play, scams, exploration, Industry, Mining, etc.). Given that legacy, why not "instant-on" PVP, when the only programming task is creating a sorting mechanism? Seems like an easy fix to me that closes a gap in the product offering.

Only reason why I've been play W.O.T. as of late. Is mainly due to the fact it's been hard to any good fights. Plus, good deal with my corp pretty much been busy with life or some other game. Got any tinfoil? |

WoT isn't meant to be played for longer than say 2 weeks (ok, 2 months if you really enjoy that simple gameplay in a MMOG). Now compare this with EVE player's lifespan.
I'm all for enchanting small-scale casual PvP, but this CS/WoT/w/e approach is just primitive and immersion-breaking. ---[center] Please resize your signature to the maximum file size of 24000 bytes. Zymurgist |

I guess we can learn that making games that are fun for short term are realatively easy, but creating complex and compelling worlds is something only the CCP has pulled off

There's already "instant-on" PVP in EVE: take a look at some low-sec and 0.0. There's also wardecs and faction warfare.
I think what you're actually looking for is 'fair PVP'. EVE's is inherently not. ...

CCP had tried to implement an "Arena" system where you can hop into a combat simulator and pewpew it up with other people, where if you lose you don't lose your ship (since it's just a simulator). But the Eve code is written in such archaic python that it can't comprehend the idea of a "fake ship", and rejected the code. It's really quite amusing. Can't be arsed to find a link now.

Even @ peak, I never took 1H to load a battle in a BETA game.
Eve is beta still? rofl
Eve can learn not to FAIL, the beta has less lag, better graphics, less bugs...

If Pirates of the Burning Sea (think a dumbed down EVE set in the 17th Century Caribbean) has taught me anything it's that instanced combat with "fair" numbers on both sides leads to a system where small ships are nearly useless.
Saddled with such a system the PotBS people made it impossible to build their two largest ship classes because they were totally dominating the 24 v 24 port battles and making them horribly unfun experiences for anyone who couldn't afford to lose large sums of money regularly. Now First Rate Ships of the Line weren't quite as expensive as a Titan in this game, but at one point one did take me 2-3 months to build with two accounts. Being a risk averse carebear, I was never able to force myself to risk such a ship, and I burned out on the game building it.
Moral of the story: not having size limits on battles allows large numbers of small inexpensive ships to contribute meaningfully in PvP. This is a good thing.

What all of you people don't mention or are ignorant of is the fact that the game of WoT as it is now is just the tip of the iceberg, it will have large regions for which to battle over, you will have alliances and clans, you will be able to build your own tanks, a lot of EVE-like things will be going on. The fights that we see now are nothing more than a test bed, this isn't the endgame nor the product we will see when the game comes out. It isn't just going to be a "grind to get a bette rtank so we can play CTF all day" like it is now.
Having said that, this type of arena warfare will not work in EVE nor would 90% of current EVE players want this type of warfare. Maybe ADD-affected scrubs who can't get their Counter Strike fix, but who cares about them?
