There's hundreds of thousands of us, so why haven't we had even one (official) story about a pod pilot who also happens to have a family (harems don't count).

CCP turned my character's fiancee and baby into an abomination known as "Slave Heavenbound02" (an in-game dev-character).
From that I would garner that the writer chaps very much acknowledge we can have family and kids :D

Who says sociopath's can't have families? Nikita's completely insane, and she still cares about me, mom and dad, she takes good care of us.

Back in the early days of Eve, RPers very commonly wrote about their families. Only, they wrote the same damn thing, over and over and over, ad nauseam ad infinitum - "my family was killed by (insert enemy race) which made me become a capsuleer to seek REVENGE!" It became so bad, that it turned into something of a trope.
If you think about it, most capsuleers are mass murderers. Chances are we've all been soundly disowned by our dirtside meatbag parents. Can you imagine a family reunion where one of the sons is a capsuleer?
"So, Billy, what have you been getting up to?" - "Oh, I started a business, we weave baskets out of complex fullerenes..."
"How about you, Johnny, how's capsuleering working out for you?" - "Yesterday I wiped out six vessels with a combined crew complement of 40,000 and destroyed a mining colony with 250,000 staff."

No we are not, but it is pretty hard to not have killed a NPC controlled ship at one time or another even as a "peaceful" miner.
On topic, I think Jowen might have a wife and family. His occupansions with production and sales are pretty safe so he does not get cloned on a daily basis (if ever...) which I guess makes him more "normal" than many capsuleers. His abitions are also well scoped (no plans of leading an empire) which makes space for family life.

Esna has a family, including a mother, father, and possibly siblings. I've never mentioned them much in RP, though, both to avoid the "I became a pod pilot to avenge my family" trope and to deal with the person who goes "hurr, I don't like your faction, so I'll write a story about bombing the planet your family is from!" Didn't stop someone from trying, but at least I could say "Dude, wrong planet. Wrong system too. In fact, wrong region."
That said, for someone with family, family, and more family, I suggest you go read Ciarente's diary. It's got plenty of (sometimes rather disturbed) family. ----------------------------------------------

Actually I think that would be an interesting dynamic. Lets avoid the trop above and say your family is still around. You have a wife and kid and you need to provide for them. you do but you grow distant and as you clone and do not age you watch your wife grow old and your son grow to head the basket weaving corperation through your ability to provide for his education(he could not become a capsuler as not everyone has the ability to become one.) Maybe you became a cap pilot as part of the navy and have now finished your service requirment. How will your family view you, how will you view them. Maybe you started minning and being a good guy. maybe it would detail your fall into madness and piracy. you start killing the raiders in self defence, you slowly become desenitized....yada yada...... lots of stories about families that could be done. I would love to see more.

I've redesigned the interior of my capsule to be very spacious and comfortable. This way, my wife can simply read a book or knit me some nice mittens while I'm jacked into the pod... which is itself jacked into the ship... which is wiping out an "unknown mining corporation" that won't let me use their friggin acceleration gate.
[excerpt from my logs]
Me (through comms): Hey honey? Wife: Yes? Me: Should I kill these guys or just warp off? Wife: What would make you happier? Me: Slaughtering them all. Wife: Well then... you should do what makes you happy then. Me: I LOURVE YOU!!!! Wife: Do make it quick though. Dinner is almost ready. Me: Right-o!!!
[/excerpt]
The only problem with this is that she doesn't clone back when I get podded. Then I get remarried... I think I'm on wife #15...
"No really baby... I MEANT to get podded last time... just to get rid of her!! All for you!! Yes, yes... it will never happen so long as I'm with you!!!" *POP* "Oops?" _______________________

Well, there's The Precious Tableau, where the protagonist may or may not have been a capsuleer, and may or may not have had a family that he wound up destroying. The capsuleer in Her Painted Selves also talked about once having had someone in his life whose life he effectively ruined.
As far as unofficially? Heck, like has been said, there are lots of capsuleers with families. Would you like Vieve's? (Er, except for her doting husband: he's not available). --- Crux Meander: an Eve-Online "soap opera with blasters". |
