Hi guys, I'm new to EVE, I started playing my character a few days ago and got most of the "learning" skills out of the way. I got a few rl friends who have started playing 4 months ago and they are already flying Battleships, Tech III ships. They are clearing Class 1&2 wormholes and soon will be moving forward. My question is, how can I catch up to them as fast as possible( enough to play with them and be useful in the fleet ).
Main question on my mind is, which weapon tree, they say I should go for missiles, but none of them ever played a missile character, and i read some stuff on the internet about missiles might suck at PvP or might not be a good choice. First question: Is that true about missiles, or are they as good of a choice as any other weaponry? Second question: What kind of a character would be the quickest to train well enough to be in a fleet with my buddies. A stealth bomber, a sniper, Electronic Warfare character, etc. ?
Any other advice for a new beginner is welcome , Thnx. I'm just a simple man trying to make my way in the universe... |

Figure out what they are lacking and train towards that. When I built an alt to run dual clients with, the first thing I did was get the alt skilled up to run the salvager, towards freighters, and an Orca. The next thing I did was leadership for the various bonuses to pass on to the combat hulls flown by the primary.
Given that your friends are running wormholes, some probing skills would not be remiss. If the wormhole you came in by gets popped, having some redundancy in being able to find your way out is handy.

First of all accept that it will take a little time to catch up. I would also advice agains missiles, at least if you will fly in a group or will do pvp later as well (you will). As for weapon system that depends on a number of things. If your friends are in wormholes, I'd say train amarr ships. Their BS line is good both for pve and pvp. Will take you a month or 2 from now before you can be in one and not get yourself killed right away. Make sure you understand what support skills mean and train them as well.

You'll never catch up to them. Go ahead and quit now if being 4 months behind is daunting for you.
PS. Read FAQ's and guides before you post.

Perhaps train up salvaging, you can augment their fleet with a salvager and they can cut you in on some profits (since theyll be making more by not having to salvage on their own, switch ships etc).
win-win.

Pick a attainable ship such as a BC or BS that you want to fly and focus all your skilling towards flying that ship the best you can.
Most players spread their skills wider by trying to fly their favoured flavour of the month, especially newer players.

I've been living in wormholes for about 9 months now so my advice comes from experience.
If your friends are planning on moving up in wormhole classes then first ask yourself what kind of fleet they have. Armour or shield. This will determine what ship you wish to skill for.
Now choose one of the following jobs that you could do whilst in a wormhole:
DPS Logistics (Higher class of wormhole require these) Salvager
DPS: Basically skill for a T3. The best two for wormholes are the Tengu (shields) or the Legion (Armour). People will say battleships are better but that is usually down to inexperience in higher end w-space. It is much easier to mitigate damage with a smaller ship than a bigger one and in the future if you find yourself in the position to do capital escalations you will praise your decision to train T3 instead of a battleship. (Sleeper battleships do the most damage and you get more of these in higher end w-space.)
Also, the Drake and Harb are awesome for PvP so either Tengu or Legion training will add to better PvP skills at the same time.
Logistics: Logistics are needed in higher end wormholes and the two best for this are the Basilisk (Shield) and the Guardian (Armour). They are always useful to have. Both require the same cruiser V as the T3s so you could make the decision between the two further down the skill line.
Salvager: People tend to use destroyers for salvaging but I've personally had great success with a Stabber. The speed helps since sleepers target from a multitude of ranges so the wrecks tend to be spread out. (There is also a salvage ship in the works so I'd keep an eye out for that.)
Someone above mentioned probe skills. These are ESSENTIAL for EVERY member of your gang. Any ships with utility highs should at least have a core probe launcher. Having just the one prober in the gang is fatal. If they die your gang could be lost. I've killed cov ops before and then had my pick of a gang that was stuck because I'd killed their only prober. Don't make that mistake.
Hope this advice will be of some use to you.

Edited by: Glyken Touchon on 27/09/2010 17:49:32 To "catch up" you will need to focus.
Pick a role that your friends need (tackler/whatever), and head towards it. You'll start being useful very quickly, and then you'll just become more so, and able to branch out.
edit- missed that OP was talking about WH ops... so removed stuff

lots of replies I'm suprised I haven't read this one yet.
If your friends are in BS's clearing out C2's then they probably aren't doing too bad in the wallets, tell them to pool together some isk and buy you a good starter character, I'm sure you can find one that fits your needs for a couple billion isk. Maybe even but a couple PLEX and sell them to pitch in your share. Easy solution to "catch up" in SP's or maybe even have a character that is ahead of where they are in SP's. Then, get yourself in a BS and fly with them.
Might ask them about the possiblity of this and offer to work on paying them back as your wallet gets fat from WH's etc. It sounds like a pretty tight bunch of friends so if you all work together it will probably benefit all of you exponentially.
Just a thought. Seeing as you can legally buy characters via the forums if you do it by the rules.
