A British businessman, who bought the Segway company less than a year ago, died after riding one of the scooters off a cliff and into a river near his Yorkshire estate.
Jim Heselden acquired the Segway company from its U.S. inventor Dean Kamen in December 2009.
According to the British media, Heselden, 62, plunged into the River Wharfe while riding a rugged country version of the two-wheeled transporter on Sunday.
"Police were called at 11.40 a.m. yesterday to reports of a man in the River Wharfe, apparently having fallen from the cliffs above," a spokesman told The Daily Mail.
A Segway was recovered from the scene. "At this time we do not believe the death to be suspicious," the spokesman added.

I grew up in Wharfedale. the Wharfe kills a few people every year. It's a small river, but it's dangerous; fast flowing and very, very fast rising. I've been out on a clear fine day and seen it rise 6' in an hour because there was heavy rain in upper Wharfedale.

No, Darwin Awards are for failed human beings. He took his vision where no man had gone before, on a Segway.

Sorry, but riding a fail scooter into a river qualifies you. When you say "fanboi" try to picture a fat man doing burlesque with 2 big ass fans that say CCP on one and HTFU on the other. Because that dude is me. |

You just don't know if he was working on an amphibious prototype.

In my opinion accidents do not qualify you for the Darwin award. Now, if he had tried to ramp across the river on a Segway and then dies during the attempt, then yes a Darwin award would be called for.

It's entirely possible to fall 30 feet from a cliff and survive. all you need is a cliff 31 feet or higher... you'll certainly survive the first 30 feet...
Anyway, I don't really get why this is such big news. As I read it, he's not the guy who invented the Segway, he just bought the company a year ago, and happened to die while using one of his company's products.
RIP Jimmy.
I think it really sucks balls that Australia (where I live) is becoming such a nanny state. I mention this because the Segway is illegal to ride here, and I think it's totally ridiculous. If a country as full of stupid people as America can handle themselves on a Segway, why in the name of the Invisible Flying Spahetti Monster are we judged to be unable to use them safely?
So here I am, having a whinge to people who couldn't give a flying fornication and have no say in whether I can ride one or not. Why am I doing this? because I wanted to and I was bored.
I'd now like to say that it's been fun posting this, but I won't because that would be a lie, and we all know that people don't tell lies on the Interwebz. I hate it when it's not clear when someone's sig begins.
