I am NOT a miner ... lucky for me ! Many are and depend on it for their progress in EVE ...
I do follow Mineral Prices .. closer than many ! An what has happened to base mineral prices should be obvious to most .
If one is a little bit aquainted with EVE .. as I am one should also KNOW that almost EVERYTHING takes a nice portion of TRITANIUM , PYERIT or MEXALLON to produce NOTHING usefull is really produced without these 3 base minerals ..all the rest are EXTRAS ... whereas ISK - wise MEGACYTE n XYDRINE also play some role .. still dwarfed by the the first 3 . NOXCIUM and ISOGEN ... play insignifficant roles
PRICES on Tritanium and Pyerite have plummeted .. mexallon is the same and also when push come to show not so important ... Zydrine and Megacyte have more than halved in price ... well so has tritanium and Pyerite from their top
SO ... is the EVE comunity producing LESS STUFF ? Is THE PLAYER BASE .... SHRINKING ? Is EVE - Online i serious DECLINE ?
Or is there ANOTHER EXPLANATION : like :
is it SPECULATION by BIG PLAYERS ? JITA has withdrawn a huge chunk of orders recently .. is JITA financially Finished ? OR are there TOO MANY MINERS willing to SLAVE for nothing and in spite of repeated HULKAGEDDONS ? Is it CCP who MANIPULATES the game .. for ex by making Tritanium more availanble ? ( but that does not explain the general price - decline ) and may be there are OTHER VALID EXPLANATIONS ..I have not thought of ?
I have always wondered why the mining community like a blindfolded flock of SHEEP just accept whatever PRICE is thrown their Way ... considering their SPENT TIME as worth little , to be EXPLOITED by smarter organisations and people ....
All in all : SOME INTELLIGENT COMMENTS on above Questions would be wellcome ... I imagine ..also for a broader player base ...
and please .... Answers representing VESTED INTERESTS .... SHUT UP ! the same applies for the well-known MENTAL PYGMEES who need to utter some insulting words in the forums in order to boost their own egos !

blaiming macro miners for the poor economy is like fat people that blame Mcdonalds for them being overweight !
A virtual economy controlled by us is just a fluctuating as a RL economy.. there are ups & downs.. for a long time the old insurance system encouraged growth and demand. The economy will stabilize !
if macro miners were the death of the economy every time we have a hukageddon the ore prices would go through the roof...

Those "nothing ores" often account for over a third of the price of building T1 items. Run the numbers, kids.
Remember, it's a BASKET of minerals. Their prices are tied together because of the insurance system. When some go down, others go up. And, when others go up due to massive market manipulation, some go down.
People who were making money with Scordite need to adjust. The market has changed.
That's how it works. That's how it has worked for years. That's how it'll continue to work.
In short: get a grip! |

Yes the insurance changes removed the artifical pricing inflation on Trit and Pyr.
That the two most common roids (veld and scord) which produced the most easily obtained minerals (trit and pyr) was worth over 100 isk/m3 was a bizzare abberation caused by a flawed insurance mechanic. Now that it is fixed, the mineral/roid values are re-aligned to their market based values, not a subsidized value.
If you find yourself mining pyro or heb, you're now not failing, but actually adapting to the new mining order.
When the insurance/processing changes where first announced the consensus among us (alot of dedicated, non-botting miners) was that Kernite would be the valuable high-sec ore, and low and behold it is, as it shoudl be. The real sheep in this are the miners who still think the easiest ore to mine/process should be worth anything but the least isk/m3.

Is EVE in fatal decline? No!
The number of active accounts continues to grow. The number or toons on active accounts continues to grow. The available content continues to grow (Though a year off of new features to give some TLC to existing content would be welcomed by most I think).
So, what is happening? CCP was seeing rapid and steady increase in the wallets of some larger corps and alliances to the tune of 10s of trillions of ISK a quarter. 10% per quarter increase in total ISK, mostly going into the wallets of relatively few.
In looking at this constant inflow of ISK to the game, they identified the issue as direct conversion of minerals to ISK in the form of 10+ trillion a month in intentional ship destruction for insurance payout.
The game is designed such that mission runners get ISK, they use that ISK to buy stuff from industrialists. Industrialists mine minerals and convert it to ISK by selling to mission runners and PVPers.
By bypassing the mission runners and PVPers and allowing direct conversion of minerals to ISK via insurance, the balance was broken.
There are too many industrialists and not enough pew-pew-ers.
Based on the last quarterly report, there was 1.7 ships per month, per active account, destroyed in PVP. Yeah... 1.7 ships per month, per active account.
So, they adjusted the insurance payouts to get rid of the direct conversion of minerals into ISK in hopes of stopping the 10 trillion a month in ISK supply growth.
What the game needs is fewer miners and industrialists, and more pew-pew-ers.
So, rather than complaining about falling mineral prices, get out of your hulk and into a BC, then get out into low or null sec and start looking for ships to make go boom.

I am a miner, and I thought of this too while crunching some numbers.
The fact is, while the isk/m3 ratio is declining, the overall value of the minerals are not.
If the minerals have less value, they sell for cheaper on the market. And if they sell for cheaper on the market, the products they are used to manufacture cost less to create. therefore, the prices for almost every item on the market drops (since cost/profit ratios of manufacturing can stay the same and everyone wants to have competitive prices). For example...the price of a Hulk dropped 30 million isk over 10 months (at least in the region I bought mine for my main in December and just recently for my alt today).
So while my actual wallet numbers may be lower, overall wealth remains the same.
Basically the actual value of the ISK is increasing ever so slightly.
The only real thing that is changing is that all the different ways to make money in EVE are leveling out...or at least approaching similar prosperities.
We all know the EVE market is like a woman in that its extremely complex and sensitive and thus no one can fully understand or predict it...but this all makes sense for me. EVEntually |

Then you, like me, are only half the problem.
I have one PVP toon and 3 industrial alts. It seems I'm 2/3rds of a problem. Or maybe I'm 1.5 a problem?
A guy that just left out corp to join a sister corp has 6... yes, 6... mining accounts + an orca alt. He cascades the 6 windows so he can see the cargo hold and mining lasers of each mining alt. Has each working on a differnt rock type, or one starts on the close and the other starts on the far and they work to the middle. Every min or so, moves ore from cargo holds to the orca. Only gets interrupted when he has to go dump the orca. Cleans an entier system of all belts, by himself.
He, unlike us, is not a fraction of a problem. He's seven problems. He mines enough ore to make enough ships for a couple dozen PVPers.
He pays for it all with PLEX, meaning 7 PVPers have to buy game time codes to maintain PLEX prices in game.

Thank You to all who attempted to come up with a serious response !
Main ( and most likely ) suggestions to the Question put forward were :
1. CCP intervention in the game mechanics ( insurance etc ) 2. Macro miners
Still ... take a look ..once again on the charts of mineral-prices this year Its a ride deep in the valley for all that is signifficant .. ISK - wise
One answer maintains that EVE is flourishing .. Considering that really a lot of people have started alts ..mainly of competitive reasons .. I wonder what the reality is
As a suggestion to CCP ... it would be interresting to be able to monitor the growth of the ISK base in circulation .. as that would give a hint .. to where we are heading ..
And finally :
The finger to the usual mentally disturbed answers ... it is a bit tragicomic that some people appear to need such in order to feel like someone ... but OK .. who cares ?

See, where you are wrong is in your presumption that some minerals are "significant". Either you're a producer that's never paid attention. Or, more-than-likely, you're a wannabe who hasn't a clue about what he's talking about. Or, you're simply some kind of troll. If that's the case, I'll feed you here ...
On capital modules, your insignificant minerals comprise 35%+ of the cost of the module. Same is true with a Caracal.
With a Drake, at current Jita prices for minerals, the insignificant minerals comprise 45%+ of the cost of the ship.
Go look at the mineral prices for other parts of the basket. Get your head out of 0.9-space and take a look at the whole basket of minerals. Prices are adjusting for different reasons. Some are adjusting due to price manipulation (Nocxium) and others just due to economic pressures from price movements of other minerals.
See, all of the mineral prices are inherently tied together due to ship insurance. One goes up, others go down, and vice versa.
So, again, take a look at all the prices to get a grasp of how much you've failed here, Chicken Little. |

Again ..Thanks for all serious answers !
And in order to summarize the explanations put forward to the issue of Falling Base Mineral price :
1. CCP Intervention in Markets ( Insurance etc ) 2. MAKRO-Miners 3. Too many miners and too little Ship destruction = too little consumtion of base mineral = too much base mineral around leading to lower prices 4. Prices on minerals are relatively speaking constant as lower Mineral prices lead to lower Item prices enabling the capsuleeer the same purchasing power of his gigantic hoard of ISK ... and finally 5. Isolated price increases on Noxcium / Isogen compensate for price declines in the other minerals ... so the steep price declines one can see and wittness on the charts .. are almost an illusion
The latter 2 explanations reminding about explanations by gouvernment and financial experts on the ancient planet EARTH during crisis times down there

another reason i would like to add to the list is salvage, mission runners can generate alot of minerals from salavaging the crap modules. With the additin of the new salvaging vessel this will greatly increase. The Noctius will even make salvaging viable for Ratters that most of the time i just see great piles of wrecks from them blasting through Santums. Salvaging needs to have less of a return in t1 mods. At least this will drop the price of Rigs.

Technically, this is looting. Salvaging gets you salvage materials used to manufacture rigs. You can't melt the salvage into minerals.
Tyrannis saw a DRASTIC drop in the minerals that can be gotten from loot. They removed meta 0 1600 plate, meta 0 large weapons, and meta 0 ABs and MWDs which accounted for a HUGE chunk of the minerals from loot.
Everytime I access a large wreck and see a metal scrap, I'm reminded I just lost a large piece of loot that pre-Tyrannis could have been melted down into 100K worth of minerals.
Yes, there is still loot that can be melted down into minerals, but it has been (in the words of the DevBlog) significantly reduced. I'd guess 50-75% less minerals coming from my loot.
And, still, that drastic drop in minerals from loot did nothing to keep the prices of minerals from racing to the new insurance fraud floor.
http://cdn1.eveonline.com/community/QEN/QEN_Q2-2010.pdf Something like 250K ships a quarter were being self-destructed prior to Tyrannis, most of them BS.
Too many miners and not enough PVPers now that the direct conversion of minerals to ISK via insurance has been nerfed.

Bro, there is a depression in the RL. It makes sense that there is a depression on the OL. There are also other factors. The Drone NPCs have opened up high-end minerals to many players. The new insurance system is playing havoc with ship, and by extent, mineral prices. Probably other things I don't even know about.

Exept the number of players is still growing. http://cdn1.eveonline.com/community/QEN/QEN_Q2-2010.pdf
Page 8 has a graph. They seem to get a dip in the number of active accounts in summer, which has happened the last 2 years. Last year the sip was at 300K active accounts. This year the dip bottomed at 325K-ish.
In fact, some of their fastest growth ever for active accounts was early 2009, during some of the worst of times for the "almost over the brink into global depression" recession.

There is another factor in all of this. The new I materials. Just for fun, I looked at robotics prices. This is a pos fuel as well as a manafacturing component for several t2 items, drones is what i seem to be using the most on. I'm not sure exactly what the effect on the market is but i know there has to be an effect.
I don't normally buy or sell highsec minerals because I can mine all that I need, and use. I really haven't noticed much in the price of lowsec mats, but I just recently started paying attention. I wanted to compute how much it actually cost me to make an item so i could figure out what it should actually be selling for.
However, I had some items up for sale that had old prices, and I was suprised to see how much the price dropped. I think, some of, the focus has just shifted from roids to planets.

Seeing as people are going to mine based on general information. The only real way to change this in favor is to A. Keep telling new miners to lose hope. B. change the information about mining so it steers people away from veld / scord, aka hi sec mining. C. Get into manufacturing and use the lower prices to your advantage by selling in low - null sec. (for all you produce by doing this.) This game has an ever changing market. Not to mention that the environment provided is the reason for this out come. If you some how magically made all the minerals disappear on the market one day. What do you think would happen?
