Feel free to bite my head off if this is the wrong place to ask.
From what I understand, platinum insurance reimburses 100% of the mineral cost of your ship, using the mineral prices at the time of the loss.
What I'm wondering is the following: what determines the price you pay to insure your ship?
Is it 30% of the mineral cost of your ship, using the mineral prices at the time you insure it? Does the insurance payout get adjusted so as for you to effectively have payed 30% of the mineral cost at the time of your loss?
For instance: You buy ship X, mineral cost 1 mil. Is the insurance cost 300k? Let's say a week passes, and after that week the mineral price rose, the ship's mineral cost is now 2 mil. You lose your ship. Do you get a 2 mil payout? Or do you get a 1.7 mil payout, adjusted for the 300k extra you would've payed had you insured at current mineral prices? The importance of this, however, is nothing compared to the necessity of having an indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started. -- Monsieur Rolly |

My understanding is that once every (blue moon) so often CCP take a database price dump on the mineral market, and that value is then used for the next few months.
** NB
Please note this is just my understanding.

The premium you pay for Platinum insurance is 30% of the current estimated payout. The problem is that the payout can change without notice. (Class action suit anyone?)
You've got to wonder how many people are using insurance now, but who knows?
I thought it was funny that when I clicked on the insurance button to confirm this information my inbox filled with sixty nearly identical notices of expired insurance on battleships that I blew up in May. You've got to wonder about the record keeping at the Secure Commerce Commission.

CCP is just trying to make the game more realistic. Let's face it, insurance companies are all too happy to collect your premium, but when it comes time to pay out...
I recently went to buy ship insurance and it showed the ship was still covered. So I go get it blowed up and only then do I receive an evemail stating that my contract was invalidated due to expiration.

This is my recollection of how it was to work as well, from Dev posts back when the change was made. They did not disclose the frequency, or the precise formula (including whether it was pegged to just Jita, any region, all regions, etc.) they were to use either.
