Like some have already mentioned, the 1998 Battlezone was a great game. I certainly wouldn't mind it being updated to today's technical standards.

Draconian DRM? A Nvidia or AMD logo appearing every time when you play the game? Awkward controls due to the multiplatform (thanks consoltards) or just another sh*tty product overall? |

X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter could do with a remake, but overall it was inferior to TIE Fighter. It had so much potential, but Lucasarts never bothered giving it a story as in depth and awesome as TIE Fighter.
I wish they would update TF completely, keep the story, gameplay, etc the same, just maek it pretty and make it run on modern pcs. Still have the collectors edition cd lying around, waiting for the day I can motivate myself to find or build a pc using old parts that will support that game.
I have never enjoyed a game as much as that one.

Ah, as I thought then. You were not very clear on what you meant with today's technical standards so on a whim, I included a few. |

So whats wrong with taking older superiour games with sub par graphics and sounds and remaking them with modern graphics and sounds whilst keeping the superiour gameplay?

Im quite sure i wrote about "modern dumbed-down remakes". Hmm, yep it is still there.
Dunno, maybe you missed it but there are 3 kinds of remakes: - ones where only graphics, some major bugs plus few other minor things are fixed. Those remakes i like and have absolutely nothing against them (ofc when "new super 3d gfx" looks nicer than 1995 2d sprites - example of remake i dont like from this kind is UFO AI, graphics is just so damn ugly that X-COM does it better). - new and "supercool" remakes made for idiot-players of AD 2010: X-COM (the new one) is prime example of this. So is Front Mission Evolved (well it is supposedly next game in cycle but... um.... yeah... quite good tactics was made into mediciore shooter). And prolly tons of other games. - new game (and new title) trying to work as "spiritual successor" to older games BUT failing. Be it with stupid mechanics, dumbing down gameplay, bugs worse than in original game, or w/ever. Elemental (MOM) and Fantasy Wars (successor to Fantasy General) sit in this category.
Till now most remakes were the 2nd or 3rd type. Thats why i just prefer old series to be left alone. They are still playable to this day and at least noone will screw them up. 3rd type is not totaly bad (as they dont take name of original series) but when you see that game takes most from older title and fails to even land on comparable level, its kinda sad. Still there are some decent/good games in 3rd category (at least for me: UFO: After- series, Afterlight imo was very solid game, well maybe except for candyland graphics).
tl;dr most new "remakes" arent even remakes per se, they are just using old series names to deliver new ****ty game. And true remakes are kinda rare (but tend to be good).

Nor trying to argue with you on that specific point but those are not actually remakes but instead money grabs based off the previous games popularity just like you said. Hence my wish for a straight up remake of mom by simply dragging it into the modern age by upgrading the graphics and sounds. As far as the 'elemental' comments go welp as I stated in another thread stardock tends to release games that are not quite finished but then go on with player involvement to turn them into 'sleeper' hits that should be anchored on everyones harddrive especially if they opt into the additional player made mods that expand on the graphics and overall gameplay.

Eh? this thread still lives .... page 4, ahahaha.
If they do a remake with core gameplay preserved and tacked on with modern enhancements/improvements (that has been proven to work), sure I'm all for it. However, if they do a remake and some young inexperienced hotshots decides to overhaul the core gameplay based on his/her console gaming/modern PC junk games and limited understanding of what made the game a classic .... the don't bother ... just don't.
My A-list:
* X-Com (the original and probably X-COM 2 : TftD are still the best .. the rest can be passed over) * Master of Orion * Master of Magic (sorry, the current Elemental WoM is something not worth getting excited about) * Fallout 1/2 (they killed it with Fallout 3) * Imperium Galactica/Haegmonia (the more recent Distant Worlds has too many screw-ups in both UI, gameplay and codebase) * Privater/Freelancer * Space Quest & King's Quest series * Elite * Megatraveller (no one, I repeat no one has even produced a game in modern times that follows-up on this genre) * Ancient Art of War (super classic, who here played this once upon a time?)
A special mention to Nexus: The Jupiter Incident ... someone needs to continue the series. |

Carmageddon series.
Ever see that old movie 'Death Race 2000'? It's not who gets to the finish line first, but more a matter of how many pedestrians (and other racers) one takes out along the way. Extra points for doing funny things to kill people like backing over them, impact during a drift, piledriver (crush between car and wall), and my favorite, collide with an object that flies off to kill someone. _______________________________
