I wanted to post a big thank-you to CCP and/or TG. Multitasking is awesome now. I'm not sure if it was 1.0.5 or 1.1, because I honestly just noticed, but something got done recently and it has transformed my Mac EVE experience.
I can now window-mode and have it in the background and other applications (such as web-browsing) are basically not affected at all. Essentially, there is no longer any jaggedness or latency in the rest of the OS due to Eve running in the background. Text input is normal, the dock pops up immediately and smoothly, etc.
Second, I can now have two clients running simultaneously (ctl-1/ctl-2 for spaces is how I do it, although the sticky ctl-key bug is still extant), and both clients run super smooth while in-space (not as perfect as one, but worlds better than before). There used to be big latency in taking actions (right-clicking, moving ore, etc.) while running two windowed clients, although things like mining were still doable. But now I'd be confident to bring two into combat. This is a huge, night-and-day difference.
Wow wow wow. I'm not at all being sarcastic, either.
There are still issues, still weird bugs. But, man, a huge thank-you to CCP and/or TG for whatever it is they did recently. Excellent job, and thank you.

Agreed.
It was picked up in the other thread where CCP Shadow said that Transgaming had identified the issue and the fix was due to be deployed soon. So assume, although not noted in the patch notes, it was as it works fine now. Details;
Multitask is unusable

Thank you for the link, Luna.
With all the whining (and I'm no exception), just thought it would be a good idea to really express how grateful I am for squashing what, to me, was the biggest irritant regarding the Mac client.

Indeed and it was the only thing keeping me on Leopard on my Mac Pro. Now I can get to updating. |

Definitely a big thank you to CCP and TG on this one. Now I can run EVE in the background at work with no problems.

Confirmed, there is now no noticeable loss in responsiveness when EVE is full screened and hidden, even on old hardware (2006 MBP, 10.6.4 with graphic update). Huge improvement.
However, hidden client still generates a lot of CPU load (60-65% of one core on said MBP while spinning in station), and corresponding, loads of heat. --

Well Cider will still be doing its thing as well so there is gonna be higher load regardless, hidden or not hidden. Anyone got any numbers of load percentages on a PC with the same spec with the client hidden?

On the exact same machine but on Windows XP SP3, the load when hidden is 2-5% as shown in the task monitor, so 4-10% of single core use directly comparable with 60% quoted in the previous post. There's also considerably less heat.
"Cider is doing its thing" is a lousy excuse. The whole point of hiding an application is that it should stop "doing its thing". Now obviously some threads should still be working and of course there will be overhead on Cider, but it shouldn't be in the 6-12x range. |
