Cat here, yada yada etc :)
I appreciate a few things on the road. If I pull in so that you may pass, I very much appreciate just a wave. A little thank-you. That's all I want in that situation, it makes me a little angry if I've pulled in and you just drive by. I am watching for a polite gesture while I'm waiting, by the way.
I don't like it very much when I'm doing the speed limit, and you overtake me dangerously. Especially if you do it on a road not designed for it. In that instance, I will seek to get in front of you again at a junction or roundabout. You won't overtake me again, I promise.
If you are turning right, and you don't take the opportunity, I will. I will beep my horn so you know I am there. If you beep your horn at me some time later, you are petty.
I will filter through traffic. It is appreciated if you stick to the middle of your lane, but if not, usually helpful drivers in the other lane will move and let me through. I try to put my hand up to say thanks, but on a motorcycle, not always practical :)
To the Land Rover that was 1m away from my number plate this evening, screw you. If you weren't right up my trumpet perhaps I'd have gone a little faster than the 20mph speed limit. My gesture was not unwarrented when you overtook me while the bus was heading towards us. You c**k.
I appreciate that it is quite embarrasing to be stuck behind a scooter doing a lowly 40mph (>than the speed limit, btw) but just because you are in a 4x4 or a BMW does not give you the right to nearly gosh darn kill me. Thanks.
Cat.

There are and always will be incompetent/thoughtless drivers who feel the need to put peoples lives in danger. The desire for revenge - road rage can be overwhelming which in turn leads to an escalation of the problem.
report them for erratic/dangerous driving at the earliest opportunity
then feel better in the knowledge that they wont feel so smug when they get stopped or visited by the police.
No one should be made to put their lives at risk for someones convenience.

Beep the horn, flash the lights, flip the bird, all in concert, it's a thing of beauty this road rage.
It's a must towards slugs who cannot seem to understand their own signaling system and its purpose.

A friend of mine gave the one fingered salute to a bad driver in anger and she thought that was that until said driver decided to pursue her 10 miles to her front door then drive past. My advice just keep calm and carry on ,who knows what sort of drunk, drugged up or psycho may be driving the other vehicle!

If you're not passing, you have no business being in the outer lane in the first place. No thanks needed.
I'm with you on the others, though.

try a street with only 1 lane with both drivers approaching from opposite ends, one is going to have to get over and let the other one go by.

It's a risk, just like traffic in general. Be sure you can be that psycho and deal with the guy right. It also helps if you can lose the guy in traffic on the way home.
As for doing nothing to not risk offend psychos you better not step outside with your hair like that...

Cat's on a scooter, I think they mean pulling into the kerbside to let cars pass.
Like, on the country roads, if I see a motorcycle behind me, I'll pull my car closer to the road edge, so the motorcycle can see past me, and can pass me without going into the opposing lane. Usually I get a thumbs up from them as they pass.
Or if it's a faster car, I'll signal and slow a little when I can see that the road's clear enough for them to pass.
Yes. Yes, I am. |

It's the points on the licence, not the fine that's the killer. Even if you drive a Ferrari, you still have the 12 point limit. And that only applies if they catch you, keep your eyes open and shouldn't get done too often.

I was in the fast lane doing 70 and letting someone out of the sevices ahead. Got undertaken by a woman in a german car who spun around and and started mouthing off. Cutting up the guy in the services I had just flashed out.
Needless to say I gave a little wave back which really annoyed her.

in ireland its common practice that when a driver pulls into the hard shoulder to allow you pass them, you flash the hazards lights 2 - 3 times as a means of saying thanks. ive never seen brits do that but if you've ever driven in ireland u will see it quite often. some drivers that pulled in to let u pass will even flash thier heads after u flashed your hazards for saying "thank you" as a way to say "your welcome"

yea drivers can be very inconsiderate sometimes. i'm a cyclist in london, so you need to have a high level of control and awareness, but even then, the amount of times ive been cut up, i'm surprised i havn't been seriously injured.
my brother, who also cycles in london, once was riding straight and a van just went straight into the back of him and he broke his leg. ofc this wasn't inconsiderate, just clearly not looking at the road, but still, cars don't own the roads, but some think they can do anything they want

Agreed. If people do this to you, let them go - they're never worth it.

Speaking as another cyclist in London, I'd say that was pretty inconsiderate. All road users have a duty to actively avoid injuring others or damaging their property, and this definitely involves taking the time to look where you're going. --- 34.4:1 mineral compression |

i am aware of my surroundings, check my mirrors, use turn signals when changing lanes or turning. but....if you are going the speed limit i will pass you, mostly because in my area no one obeys the speed limit i even saw a 70ish old lady speed past this guy in his 20s, it was . at any rate, i hate driving, too many idiots, too slow, too many rules and laws. I can't wait for the day computers take over driving, so i can relax on my way to work or classes.

i was bored earlier, and someone overtook me dangerously on a 40mph road while i was doing 40 earlier. the guy must have been an idiot, as it was on a slight uphill so limited visibility ahead, he got a shock when a car was heading towards him in the other lane lol
he had to stop at some lights, and being on a scooter, i got ahead of him. i was watching my mirrors for his indicators and turned wherever he was going. until he got wise to what i was doing and didn't indicate lol
like i say i was bored, but i didn't break the law once and he did twice i also got to wind him up for his dangerous overtake for about five minutes hehehe
i can be so petty when im bored lol

Being a motorcycle rider myself I can understand where you are coming from with inattentive drivers trying to kill you regularly, but intentionally provoking a 2-ton truck on your moped afterward is just plain stupid. YOU WILL NOT WIN.

Edited by: el Sabor on 20/10/2010 20:10:59 One thing that winds me up are lane residents on the motorway... The guy who sits in the middle lane with cruise control at 70mph so he can overtake slow things and still be overtaken. It makes sense for easy driving but I worry that a lot of these drivers are not paying much attention. I see people doing this at 3am on an empty road.
Being a cyclist myself I try to respect cyclists on the road I give you plenty of space... but... London cyclists please don't lean on my car in traffic!
EDIT: A lot of the stuff I see in this thread isn't just bad driving but lack of manners too! I totally agree with the friendly wave Cat, even if i feel like crap on a Monday I'll smile and wave if someone lets me out. Just like I would say thanks if someone opened a door for me.

I get what you're saying, my fight as described was with a car, but my point is that if you do something needlessly I will pull you up on it. I've no problem with people overtaking me, especially as my choke seems to be screwed atm, but if you pull a stunt then I'm gonna make sure you don't do that again while I'm involved.
I know it's bad, and I pick my fights, but if you obey the Highway Code (which I am quite familiar with being a L plate nub) I'll not have issue with you. Its the dangerous overtakings that get my goat, and when I have the option, I try to teach the overtaker a lesson. It isn't spite, I really do regard it as an education.
Sometimes drivers swear at me as I filter. My father is a biker, and I asked him about it. Apparently some drivers just hate bikes filtering, as they've been in traffic for the last half hour and you are just passing by with ease. I've been called names for filtering.
On an unrelated note, is anyone else cold? I'm f***ing freezing here lol

Just keep in mind that your retaliatory actions are just as needless and one day you just might cross the path of Mr. Roadrage who may have simply just missed you the first time, thus causing him to think that you are the trouble maker in which case you become little more than a speed bump. You want to be around for that day when you 'lose' that fight? Believe me when I tell you that actions like that in my neck of the woods end up as intersection brawls at red lights and the last thing you want is a angry pair of rednecks with tire irons getting nose to nose with you.

It's not your job to police the roads and deliver lessons Cat. Oddly enough we already have folk to do that. I believe that they are called The Police and driving instructors.
Pull this stunt with enough idiots and you'll eventually find one that will cheerfully run you off the road and then leg it home for his tea without giving your mangled moped and broken carcass a second thought.
I used to drive trucks for a living, and before that I drove taxis and before that I was a motorcycle courier and I have over 25 years experience of making my way about the country in vehicles of all sizes and I still make mistakes on the road from time to time. Any professional driver will tell you that it doesn't matter how long you've been driving, how many advanced qualifications you have, how many driving assessments you've passed - we all make mistakes occasionally.
You aren't yet able to handle a vehicle with a clutch and gears and you think that you are fit to pass judgement on other road users and apply your own peculiar brand of instant justice to supposed miscreants.
There are any number of words to describe this kind of attitude, but I think the most obvious one is arrogant.
Take an attitude like this with you onto a proper bike, and we'll be watching your relatives laying flowers at a roadside shrine sooner than you might think.

ffs i thought those flowers at the bent lampost were just free flowers
i understand i'm not being cool, but i think my dayglo orange helmet and jacket suggest that i'm trying to be safe, it really annoys me when people act in the way i described previously.
i got into a bit of a fight yesterday. i was turning right, and some chump turned into my path. i used my hooter and had a word with him at the next junction. he said "I'm sorry, I just kinda didn't regard it..." I informed him that he should be careful in future to which he agreed. I think it shook him up quite a bit.
I will never intentionally risk my life, but I will point it out some way to people that risk my life...

Did you know that is an offence in the uk? I saw a police programme the other week where they pulled a motorcyclist and gave him an ú80 fine because the copper caught him flipping the bird.
