Edited by: Joe Starbreaker on 07/10/2010 04:28:05 My one and only scam since starting EVE was to sell a "Rupture Fleet Issue" in Rens for 40 million. Just an old trade-window scam with a renamed Rupture, but it should never have happened for two reasons:
1. No such ship exists. 2. I negotiated it in Rens Local, with 100+ people listening, and nobody messed it up for me.
Funny thing: I told the guy a price of 100 million or so, then lured him in by letting him think he was really successfully haggling me down. I came down to 80 million, but he said he didn't have enough. So I said, you can make two payments, 40 million now, and 40 million tomorrow. He jumped at the opportunity. After exchanging forty million for the renamed Rupture, he promptly announced that he had scammed me!
I complained a bit about him ripping me off for the 40 million that he owed me, while he had a laugh at my expense that I was so stupid to trust him to pay me later.
I was logged off before he figured out what had really happened, and sent me a message.

We do one at a time, for 4 of them, than he says he trusts me and jets out 5 plexes, which i take and never pay him for :)

I just had something happen that reminded me of this thread.
So, I'm sitting in Jita, patiently spamming "I will answer any questions you have about scams, contracts, or ninja salvaging. Subjects covered in bio. Message me. [SOMER Guaranteeed]" while watching these ... horrible examples of bad scams scroll by. Finally, after about a half an hour with n'er a nibble, in frustration I type in, "Let me FIX your FAILED SCAM", bold it, and hit enter. Before another line can pop up, I get a chat request.
The guy, who shall remain nameless, shows me what he's doing. He is attempting to sell his Velator as a Fleet Issue Velator for 5 million. After talking with him a little more about how he needs to change items, and how he really needs to consider moving away from using the trade window, he tells me he is on a trial account so he can't use contracts. His toon is 1 day old. And he only has 12 million ISK to his name. So much for my consulting fee.
But the real kicker is this:
HE SOLD TWO OF THEM.
That's right. His big complaint was that he only managed to sell two Velators for 5 million each as "Fleet Issue".
My faith in the EvE learning curve has been shaken.

In order to try and maintain funny...I've put up joke contracts for velators and advertised them in local as Pend Issue Velators.
I've managed to sell 'Pend Issue Velators' through contracts for up to two million isk. Its not even a scam since Pend Insurance is the actual issuer through insurance. --

Someone says into Jita local "WTB Navy Armageddon 350m" I, of course, quickly buy an armageddon and begin to rename it before I realise it doesn't fit! I open trade and put my "Armagedon Navy Issue" (note the lack of correct spelling) up for trade. He promptly puts in 350mil and accepts.

Many years ago, someone wanted to join our drug dealing corp. He had already been turned down by some rivals, and they tipped us off soon after he approached us that he had bought most of his wealth with RMT. We rejected him also and put a petition in. However, I had been grooming myself a bonafide "alt/spy" for a while, and so hatched a plan to try and tap into this guy's wallet.
The guy was really keen on being in a drug corp, so with my alt, I set up a fake one, including a fake dealing channel populated by some alts and some friends. I then got my alt character to accidentally "bump" into him, and start a discussion and invite into our channel. I did a fake deal in front of him with a friend posing as a customer, to help make look more genuine, and then after chatting a bit mroe presented myself as a rival outfit to my main's drug corp.
He was really interested in getting involved more in the industry, and offered to bank roll things. He admitted he was a newb, and needed to team up with a more experienced player, and that the main thing he could bring to the table was ISK and ideas.
Over the next few weeks, I hung out with him and got to know him more. We talked about various business plans and opportunities. I setup a fake email address so we could chat about it out game too. Eventually we formed a corp together, with 50% shares each. He wanted to invest his ISK so it would make more for him, he already had a few billion with the International Starbase Syndicate, which gave him a nice monthly dividend (this was about 4 years ago), so the plan was to set up a new service in Eve, a pawn brokers. People who were having cash flow problems, could pawn some high value asset to us for a few weeks, and then would buy it back with a fee. I didn't really think this would work, but really all I was waiting for is him to start putting ISK into the corp wallet :)
So, we worked out the contracts and a detailed business plan, and then it was just a matter of timing. The way it worked out was I would "make up" a client, and pretend a client had pawned us something, and then transfer the ISK away. Usually I'd use some excuse like it was a station transfer, so couldn't use the corp wallet directly. Once the corp wallet was low, would ask him to top it up, as we were "missing business opportunities". It was a tough game trying not to take the **** too much, and stretch it over as long as possible, so he would keep putting more ISK into the corp wallet without getting suspicious. Ultimately only had a 4 week window, as this was supposed to be the length of contract for the pawn. At this point he would be expecting to see some returns from these customers, the ones that I had invented.
Of course with all good scams, need to finish the whole thing off with some class and style, and I knew he had some of the most expensive implants could buy at the time. My alt had hardly any skill points, but I trained her up enough to fly a rifter and use some arts. It took a few weeks to convince him to NPC together with me, his timezone was Singapore, and he was often on business so wasn't that easy.
I invited him to the Skelton Comet in Sinq Laison, I knew I wouldn't be able to take his ship out with mine, and get the pod. So I wanted a little help from the NPCs. I set up a ship at a SS in the same system, and then the idea was to go on a suicide mission, get our ships blown up, gang warp us to the safespot with my waiting ship, hop in and pod him.
So, one day after getting back from the pub. I discovered he was online, and up for some NPCing. I knew after 3 months undercover, there was only one chance to make it perfect, and felt a little nervous. Just like at the start of a race, or an exam. |

I executed the plan, and all went well, though it was surprisingly unsatisfying. I never needed my backup rifter, he got blown up fairly quickly, so just warped us 100km out from the station. Popped his pod, removed his roles, and took what was left in the corp wallet. In total, netted around 3bn. Not much today, but fairly respectful back then.
The guy was fairly upset and couldn't understand why I had turned. I told him because he cheated by buying his ISK. In honesty, felt a little sorry for him - I think for him just a different cultural attitude towards this kind of thing. He had told me he didn't have a girlfriend in RL, and that "eve was his girlfriend". At the time I morally justified to myself that by brutally screwing over this guy, and maybe getting him to quit eve, would perhaps give him a chance to reflect on his prioritise in life. You have to be cruel to be kind sometimes :D
In RL he claimed to be a millionaire with his own business selling medical supplies to the oil and gas industry. I think he was used to people being a lot nicer to him. A few weeks later after it settled down, he sent me an evemail thanking me for teaching him a hard learned lesson in trust.
The ISK was a welcome addition to the wallet. The final outcome did feel like an anti-climax, but not sure what else could have really happened? But it didn't put me off doing anything similar in the future again.
I think is just the way it is, and the fun is often the playing out of the scam rather than the end. A more recent example we "broke" a rival corp and alliance with both internal and external pressures that was very entertaining when it was being played out, but on the final move, when we instigated the destruction of all their towers, and their alliance mates to kick them from their own alliance they led and founded, the leaders rage quit so we never really got to revel in their misery. |

I created an alt on a trial account, then found a corp to accept me while I was on a trial account, then pretended I was a wet-behind-the-ears newb instead of a 2yr old bittervet, then I told the ceo I was a corp thief in the past, then the CEO offered me director roles, then I told one of the corp's wartargets that I was gonna steal everything from the corp, then the WT told one of the corp's directors that I was gonna steal everything (but they didn't believe the WT), then I stole everything and disbanded their alliance. true story.

With an alt I was in Jita, making another Jita-run to gather stuff.. in local I saw the most trendy scam of that day which was offering a tech II Invulnerability Field on the contract market as a Caldari Navy Invul for about 150m - 300m. Lots of contracts were up and while it may sound logical to some wanna-be scammers to offer an item to half the price that the item it should mime is worth I think offering the invul for just 150m ISK when the navy invuls sells for 300m ISK is just foolish.. But w/e..
Seeing all those contracts and the noobishness in some of those scamattempts led me to the feeling that I wanted to scam the wannabe-scammers..
So I just put up contracts in the contract market of regular tech II Invulnerability Fields with the description that it is a tech II Invulnerability Field..
Price 8m ISK.
Sold all my contracts that I put up in about an hour. Not much margin (on market they were about 1.2m ISK at that time) but still pretty nice to take those hard-scammed ISKies away from those that just copy scams and dont know what they do (dont even know where to buy Tech II Invuls in Jita..).

I hated that scam.. It was around the height of that scam that I acquired 3 or 4 C-Type MARs and was attempting to sell them. I actually needed isk quick (rather than just saying I needed isk quick) but I wasn't about to undercut myself. I took them to Jita and put up contracts for them all, and as I was bored I started just spamming the legit contracts in to local.
I proceeded to get 5 convos over the next 30 mins with the first one being the best. I was accused of scamming (I actually wasn't as it was the real item for the market price). I asked how I was scamming and was cheerfully told that they couldn't be deadspace MARs because they didnt have the little Tech 2 symbol in the corner.. I so was utterly dumbfounded that I missed the opportunity to sell them a T2 MAR for a massively inflated price. The other scam had worked so well there were actually a group of people that believed all deadspace and officer mods had the T2 symbol on them.. The other 4 convos were not as exciting (I got called a noob for trying to scam before being blocked, someone wanted to take them off my hands for the standard T1 price, Someone wanted 50% off if they bought all of them, I cant remember the other one).
It took me 4 days to sell them in the end (I stopped bothering to spam the contracts).

I once convinced a particular "Lord Xebuzoroc" of The Amarrian Experience that I was a professional Auditor and Hangar Organizer. By convincing him that I was a reformed Thief looking to make the world better, it was a short step from there to make him believe that all he had to do in return for my humble services was to grant me Director roles. The net result was an additional 1.5 bil in the wallet.
The money wasn't all that much, really. No, what made it worthwhile is that I did it on a character named Corporate Thief

Odd how people don't believe that story; contract surfing can net you ridiculous amounts of ISK with pretty much no work involved other than having a decent knowledge of what things are worth. I've netted 3 T2 ammo BPOs for 1-10mil each, a HobGob II BPO for 1 bil (instead of 50b), Tobias Gyrostab for 50m (instead of ~3-4b), etc. Hell, there was an Estamel BCU listed for 90mil just yesterday that I missed by half a second. Can be easy to make a mistake, almost have done it myself a few times, but there's a rush when you find items that will net you billions and it's way more interesting than F1 NPCs, mining, or 0.01 ISK games.
