Edited by: MaiLina KaTar on 03/01/2005 12:24:31 This is part one of what will most likely become a little set of suggestions concerning POS. It will deal with the CT production management UI, it's drawbacks and how I think they should be improved for better usability. I am aware that something like this will most likely never make it into the game, but I'm doing this more out of personal enjoyment than anything else so keep your "this is way too much" flames to yourselves please. Feel free to give feedback and suggestions though.
Click here to view a concept drawing (120kb jpg) that visualises how the process management should look like IMO.
I believe that the current UI isn't good enough because of several reasons:
- Once POS become bigger with more harvesters, reactors and other stuff, the current table view reaches its limits when it comes to usability.
With more complex connections between all the structures, one might have to scroll up/down the table while trying to drag icons around to make connections. This will become hard to implement and even if its done properly it will still not be comfortable to use.
- The table view can make it hard to visualise the link structure of a POS. For POS-newbies this is the main problem. With the current UI it can take you several hours of fiddling around with the UI until you have everything working right for a basic POS. Come a more complex one with several reactors and silos and you have yourself one ***** of an UI to deal with.
- Though it would be easy to do with a little progress bar, the current UI does not show the mining process of your harvesters.
- The current implementation looks crappy and confusing.
Why my concept is better:
- You catch the link structure and status of your production chain within the blink of an eye.
- Progress bars all over the place give you quick info on important stuff like moon harvester cycle status, silo capacity and usage, reactor status,...
- Colored lines connecting the structure icons show you the status of your connections and whether they're working properly or not.
- Context menu based structure linking makes it easy to link/unlink structures especially for more complex production chains.
Just rightclick on a structure icon, select where the input and output of that structure should go to and that's it. No stupid icon dragging and the lines connecting the structure icons clearly show you what's going on in your POS.
With something like this in place instead of the current table view, managing a POS, especially a big POS that involves upcoming structures like power/cpu generators, more harvies, reactors and silos would become a whole lot easier. I see a lot of problems coming up with the current implementation, so my concept is merely an attempt at providing suggestions to prepare the POS management UI for upcoming stuff.
Cheers.

I like the table view. This is not a complex thing we have here. I want to see everything . I know what is linked and working.
Maybe after they are linked the table gets sorted again. Placing the in items above the out ones. Then you can collapse a linked group.
I believe the most important part is being able to name things. Naming Silos should be the main issue. --------------------------

eh sure but you'd have to make the link icons smaller so u could fit more of them.... =) ----------------- *Decloaks and starts blasting your sig* Applesauce Biotch

Very nice image and I agree with your suggestions (I know it was a pain when my corp tried to figure out how our mining system worked).
I feel I should point out that there's a 'Starbases - What would you like to see?' thread stickied by Oveur at the top of this page and that is perhaps a better place to put POS suggestions instead of creating a lot of new threads. :) ----------------------------------
