I have a 2004 Toyota celica and some jackass smashed the tailight.
Where is the best place to buy a new one + get it fitted?
Seems everywhere is a rip off, best quote I have had so far is ú81.50 for part and ú110 for fitting.....wtf its a bit of plastic....
I am in UK, glasgow.
Any ideas lol

tail lights on most cars are over priced but there is not much you can do about it. 110 to put it on though - that sounds ridiculous. I'd suggest buy the taillight from the dealer (if they won't come down on the installation charge) and take it to a another garage to put it on.

Might be worth it to see if you can get one from a car breakers. Fitting it I don't know about, could probably get it done by a local garage.
Like, I got 3 wheel trims for my car, a windscreen wiper arm, a tail light and some other bits and bobs for ú40 from the local car breaker. Fitted them myself though.

or, even better: buy one and install it yourself. it isn't really that hard to install one of those since you don't need to align/calibrate it like the headlights.
all you need is a screwdriver and you're all set. ---

True, although some of those things can be a nightmare..
But as the person a coupel up said, check the junk yard - that's a great idea. You will just need to find out what model your Celica changed from. Ie: a 2002 celica tail light may fit your 2004. etc.

The hardest part for a tail light is the seal that prevents water getting in. Fitting that was the tricky part on mine.
You can get silicone sealanty stuff though, like the stuff they use on double glazing and windows and such. Not ideal, but gets the job done.

You're in luck, when a Toyota dies it's typically due to rust, leaving the plastic details intacts. Check the local scrapyard.
That being said the longevity of a Toyota do make spare parts hard to come by.

Edited by: ReaperOfSly on 07/10/2010 16:33:28 I think you're unlikely to find a post-millennial Celica in a breaker's yard, but it's always worth a try. This site has contacts in breakers yards all over the country, so you might get lucky by searching there (got myself a replacement steering wheel from there a few months ago, after someone nicked it). Otherwise, you're just going to have to suck it up and pay the dealer price for the part. Definitely get a third party (or yourself) to fit it though. It's a one hour job at most, so ú110 is insane. ____________________

Just don't go to quick-fit on great western road, they're a bunch of scamming wee bams, sorry I can't give a better recommendation. I know there's a garage in Paisley my mate uses, will post the name once he replies to my text.
Someone on the piston heads site might be able to tell you where to get a good deal on parts (scotland or technical forums are probably the best bet), also they might tell you how easy the work is to carry out yourself, if it's a rear tail light it shouldn't be too complicated. Just make sure you know how to stick the seal back on and you're golden. _______

in comparision to headlights, it's much easier.
and if they follow the eastern way of building cars even more easy it is, because if you buy the taillight brand new, it commes included with all the cables, lamps and it's a perfectly self-sealed unit where all you need to do is unscrew and unplug old taillight, plug new one and screw it on the place. no sealants needed nor anything
at least that's the experience I have with hondas and hyundais.
and with a bit of a search on the interwebs, it seems that it's just like that ---

The high price for fitting is probably because you got a quote from a dealer.
Some cars they have to remove the rear bumper to fit tail lights as some of the securing bolts are underneath it, and the wiring runs through the rear slam panel. Most jap cars are similar in this respect, but I'm unsure about the third gen Celica, I haven't worked on the back end of one before.
As for the price for fitting, it's because the dealer will be charging by the hour, and as part of their quality checks they'll be obliged to check the panel alignment of the back end of the car with a plug gauge and ensure that everything is lined up correctly when they refit the rear bumper.
It's easy enough done at home in your garage or on your driveway to be honest if you're decent at DIY and are feeling energetic.
