Hey all,
Now I know the main differences between omni tanking and rat-specific hardeners.
I am running level 4's and loving it very much.
Soloing them for dps has not been an issue however my tank is not abl to hold against a lot of them at a given time.
I am currently running with 2 CN Inv. Fields.
EM - 57% Therm - 67% Kin - 72% Exp - 79%
now that I am doing rat-speicifc missions I am wondering the following.....Does 20% MORE resists really really REALLY matter?
I mean will that truly make or break a mission tank
Now say this for a sansha mission resists:
EM - 75% Therm - 80%
Does that 20% difference really matter as much??

Conveniently enought, a 20% difference makes a 20% difference. On a more serious note, what is your fit? If you're having trouble with a fit that's pimp enough to have two 350M isk invuls, there's a high probability that you're doing something else very wrong.

20% more resists get the better the higher the beginning resists are.
lets say you have 70% resi so from 1000 dmg hit you take 300 Lets now say you have 90% resi from a 1000 dmg hit you take 100
Thast not 20% less.. Thats 66% less damage what you dont have to rep or shieldboost.

Actually, if you look at your EM resists, 57% to 75% is a flat 18% improvement, but that's 18% of the unresisted damage. In terms of a relative improvement, you took 43% of total EM damage before, so an improvement of 18% resistance is actually a 42% reduction of your previous EM damage. The same goes for thermal; at 67% resist you take 33% damage, so improving your resists by 13% reduces your received damage by 39%.

The rule for PvE is this -- bring the minimum tank you need to ensure you survive, then max your dps/killing time.
For a low sp/basic fit, that means faction specific hardeners are worth it all the time. This is because to get an omni tank to an acceptable level may require 5+ defensive mods, a faction specific fit can usually do it in 3.
But once you hit high end ships, the other side kicks in. A golem/tengu doesn't need massive tank and thus you can get by with a minimal omni tank. This means less time spent in station switching hardeners and thus more isk.
