I just got my Retriever a few min ago but won't give it a run until morning. I ran across an ice field a week ago and thought of giving it a spin. I already trained ice harvesting before I knew I needed a Barge/Exhumer to harvest it. Anyway, I noticed as-is the cycle is 10 min. Would it be worth it for me to grab an ice pick and climb over there and chizzle away? I have 3 weeks plus before I move into a covetor so was just kicking around some ideas to pass the time.

There are many disccussions on what to mine ice in or whether its worth mining. Ultimatly to make it worth your while you should be in a Mackinaw...the ship thats designed for a purpose...ICE mining. Yes you can mine it in other exhumers but ultimatly be you mining solo or in a group..the way to go its the Mackinaw. Many may argue against this because of course everyone has different opinions.
Is it worth you doing it? It all depends on what you want out of EvE..if your happy to sit and wait 10 minutes per cycle...until hold is full and then dock/undock and restart (Assuming of course you have just the one account) and make less isk than you would in just about every other aspect of EvE then go for it.
Ice mining only starts paying off when you have several Macks running with a Orca or Rorqual support and a character running relevant implants and all skills maxed out. And even then its not massive ammounts of isk lining your wallets. But...if thats what you like doing its steady and as things are...never going to run out.

If you are doing it solo and are at the computer then it is not worth it. For it to be worth it look into having multiple accounts and in semiafk style (you can set it up so you only need to come back to computer every 30 mins).

I wouldn't waste my time in a retriever ya better off with a mack.
If solo mining ya be more worth while mining ore.
The ice stuff normal better of in groups/multi accounts at semi afk, a friend does it with orca 'n' 5 macks about 25mil an hour, whilst his main is out pirating and skinning carebears

A Mack is a long way off, training wise. I was just wondering if it would net me a good profit. And I am running 2 accounts, so I have 2 Retrievers with one having a Rigged Bestower acting as a dumptruck. The only Icefield that I know of is a jump away from a dockable station for me. For lack of nothing else to do I'll go ahead and run a cycle and see what I get.

Yes it is a bit of a time investment to get up into the Exhumers, but you're probably going to head that way anyway if you're interested in mining. I would suggest sticking with ore for now, look at getting some quick-trained mining upgrades, then focus exclusively on getting to the Exhumers. Once there work on skills that will allow you to use better upgrades and T2 mining crystals. (These added skill trainings can easily be mixed with other non-related skills to your liking and playing enjoyment.)

Leave the mining to the bots imo.

Tbh you will find you will come close to flying the mackinaw skills time wise even if you dont plan for it with most thing to do with industry. For example for an orca you need mining barge V (after that is trained you're a few days from the mack) To refine well you need some skills related to mining.
As stated ice mining really pays off in small to mid gangs. Although that could be the same for mining ore anyways but if you're interested read up on it as its a bit different from normal ore and spend an hour doing it or something. The best way to find out if you like it is try it ------------------------------

There are days that you just want to veg in front of the tv, those are the days for Ice mining alone.
Then there are days where your alliance / corp will ask you to show up and mine with them.
Then there are days where you just have to join a fleet and blow something up:-)
You can make isk doing them all. Never let one set of players tell you that there's is the only way to play eve. Try them all.
Have fun and welcome to eve:-) |

The size of the mining operation has nothing to with mining profitability. 1 mackinaw earns just as much isk per character as 20 mackinaws. There's only one reason to choose ice mining over anything else, the fact that you only have to tab into the game every 20 min or so.

I have a ice mining corp with 2 Macs and a Orca. With this setup I can easily buy PLEX for all three accounts and play for free. Ice mining is the most boring gameplay but it allows you to play semi afk. You need at least 2 accounts to ice mine to make it worthwhile. One for for mining and one for hauling the ice back to a station.

Hiya, I run 4 accounts when ever im doing ice/ore mining; the setup I have is Rorqual on main while 3 on mackinaws, this is all with T2 fittings. I can bring down the Mackinaws cycles down to 210sec(68blocks/hr on 1 pilot) and ore down to around 134sec(115k+m3/hr of ore per pilot) last time i checked. This is with having the mind-link implant, and leaderships skills to 5 other than warfare link at 3. Its pretty nice, both are profitable just depending what i feel like mining. So depending where you live either can be profitable.

Right..
Maybe if you mine for 6 straight hours a day, every single day, for a Month. -------------------------------------------------- |

Sure but what i meant is it is far more suitable to ice mine in a group just for logistical reasons and because it takes alot less time to acquire the amount needed
Pretty much the same as normal mining in that respect ------------------------------
