I am Brynhilda, still fairly new to the Universe of EVE and started back at the end of June.
Like many new players, I was wary of going and losing ships in Low Sec due to the stories of pirate lords and their evil cohorts similar to that of Genghis Khan and how they will blow your ship up just to see what type of paper clips were used to keep it together.
Eventually, I put aside my carebear ways and grew restless in destroying rats and decided to go after high sec players but not to the point of ganking. I've done mostly can flipping with success based on if I remember to fit a scram or not.
Simply, it wasn't enough. I began to venture out into Low Sec in search of adventure and where the pirates lived. Most encounters in Low Sec usually ended in me losing a Harbinger or leaving in my Slicer but instead of rage and carebear tears, I decided to strike a chat with these pirates I encounter, telling them thanks for the experience and the like and even asking one if there was any faction loot in a rat I blew up before he grabbed me.
Pirates are simply human as well. I have yet to actually have one pay for the damages (something I don't expect at all) but thanking them for the experience of podding and losing your ship lets pirates know that they do their job well as do canflipping miners to teach them not to can mine without some sort of guard.
Playing EVE is meant to be fun, really. I am a new player, I lose ships to pirates and I enjoy myself. If only other folks would let go of their carebear ways.

Play for fun and you will enjoy the game regardless if you lose your new or favorite shiny. Fun is always different for everyone though and while some may like pulling wings off flies or getting sobbing tears, others might just enjoy the hunt.
Personally, I don't get off on tears when I blow up a space ship, as I'm more into the hunt and tactics involved in getting the catch.

Always good to chat to the person who just handed you your ass - that's how you learn, also a GF in local or a GoodBlob, whatever the case.

I'm pretty new too. I've been killed by pirates a few times so far... My first time i chatted to the pirate and said thanks for the huge adrenalin rush. he replied "you should experience it from this side". we chatted more and he eventually reimbursed me all my money (about 2mill).. err i was in a frigate with t1 crap.
anyways that was all good and i sent him some music tracks of mine. his corp mate a marie lavoux has since been trying to wipe me out even harder but so far has failed.. lucky me.
then only 2 or 3 days ago i lost another ship to a pirate and we started talking and he actually gave me 10 mill which almost covered teh destroyer i was flying around in.
in FACT so far the most conversations and interaction ive had with people in EVE is thru pirates wiping me out.

What is wrong with you people. Chatting it up with a pirates who JUST ganked you is like getting beaten up by the class bully then becoming best friends. You are all SICK!
Pirate: I'm sorry I had to blow up your ship. Victim: It's ok, I forgive you. Pirate: You ....you do? Victim: Want to be my friend? Pirate: SURE! I've never had a friend before. sniff....sniff... Victim: It's ok...cry on my carebear shoulder. Pirate: I love you! Victim: I love you too!

Because clearly, the people who blow up my ships message me with hearts and gumdrops.
Oh, wait...that doesn't happen. I message THEM with hearts and gumdrops to show no hard feelings.

One time I was mining in my hulk when suddenly four Tempests warped in. I started to freak out but then they just dropped a can full of fresh mining crystals and set it blue. I guess sometimes pirates aren't so bad? ---- Blog: My Loot, Your Tears |

Dunno.. I think a lot of pirates actually have a bit of a soft spot for a new player who actually wants to figure out what they did wrong afterwards (the convo afterwards is almost as good as a local + private convo rage). I know a good few pilots who were cool about it afterwards, and whilst not giving them isk I certainly gave them advice, a few of them have become pirates themselves /proud.
That said, I don't feel the same sympathy for older players in that situation, though I have made a few of them come out again trusting me not to destroy them :D

I've always had a soft spot for new pilots, but it doesn't mean I let up in my systems. I rarely accept ransoms unless I plan to dishonor them for more end return. It doesn't always go as well for the pilot who made the mistake in thinking pirates are supposed to have honor. But then again, I'm oldschool, scum and vile -- what piracy is about to me.
