Edited by: Cyprus Black on 15/10/2010 01:59:59 So I'm trying to get into piracy and read the Newbies Guide to Piracy pdf multiple times. The trouble is actually finding a target.
Sometimes I'll go all the way around the galaxy through low sec and never come across a target to which I can attack. Sure I'll pass other players in low sec, but they're either docked, cloaked, in a blob, or in a mission.
I've tried to fit an expanded probe launcher, but it's a very bad fit on any cruiser and frigate. Leaves nothing left for weapons or tank.
So how do you guys find targets? Do you generally dwell in a given area with scanning ships nearby in a station? Do you hunt nomad style? Why is it so hard to find a target?

Edited by: Captain Blart on 15/10/2010 11:34:20 not sure about piracy but if yo want to pvp, put an eyepatch, a parrot on the left shoulder and go for Egghelende or Ammamake near Rens.
Go in a belt and wait , should not be too long before you see some people coming to greet you.
Dont forget to shout YARRR in local as soon as you scramble them

Solo frig pirate here; I had the same problem when I began roaming losec, and even now, have days where ill roam and find nothing. It happens. However, I can usually find fights within an hour or so, and I have had days where I have had 5 or 6 practically back to back.
A lot of those ships you see on D-scan are at a POS; the secret is to drop a safe near a planet and it's belts, so the belts all appear more than 5 degrees apart. This pretty much eliminates picking up ships at a POS.
The map is your friend, and 90% of losec is basically empty; look for systems with destroyed rats, or lots of jumps in and out. Go, make your safespots, and lurk around. As you get more experienced, you will probably settle in a region and get to know it. If you just want to get in fights, try busier systems like Evati, Amamake, or OMS and just ask in local. 80% of my fights are against other pirates or "anti pirates".
It can be dull at times, I am not gonna lie. But i have more busy days than slow ones. Welcome to piracy, and hey, youre one up on me; I only ever fly frigs, you apparently are usin cruisers. Dirty Little Slave, reporting for duty! |

With regards to Probes... You'll likely either need an alt with a probe ship, or a probe ship yourself and then switch out.
If you get a lot of explorers in your area, you can try skipping the combat probes and just scan down sites in your loop. When you have them bookmarked, make another pass and you can warp to the sites and see if any potential targets are running them.

You can find some more info for aspiring pirates Here
As others have said you will have good days and bad days, but the better you get at using the dscan the more your chances will improve. Also if you find yourself unwilling to engage targets for fear of losing your ship just grab a t1 frig and go for it every time..u will be surprised how often you win.

Find a corp or alliance a lone pirate is a dead pirate. They will get you started if they sound like morons they likely are. If your looking for a new home head out to avenod or turner mabye gerper but its been a few years. Talk some smack and then 1 v 1 someone. You will die but you will earn respect thats a lot more important.

The guide was written in a time when you had a lot of roaming targets who both ratted in low security and etc. That time has passed us now. You wont find many targets in belts unless it's a really new target or a trap. Most pirates stick to gate camping or roaming in squads to gank those at the gates or stations mostly.

The best spots are between high security empire and low security empire. The hot systems are always the ones that lead into high security empire and etc. There is generally more traffic there from people going into empire to get goods or people heading into low security empire or null sec. It's what many would consider the trade routes into and out of empire. But be warned, those systems are generally attracted to many new pirates such as yourself.
Frigates are really becoming useless for piracy. Unless you're looking to find some 1-on-1 skirmishes with other Frig pilots, I wouldn't go that route. There however is good targets for Frigs in 0.0 spots where empire bears mine or trade in their controlled space. But getting the goods out of 0.0 is very difficult if you manage to pop something major there.
Other than that, the best thing you can do is join the ranks like everyone else. Find a good outfit, camp a gate with either cruiser hulls or above and call yourself a pirate.

This is very true. It's still very hard to be a solo pirate. I've been doing it since 2004 and even today, I still managed to find my Tempest swarmed with 6 Drakes on a battle that was planned for easy picking.

Edited by: AstarothPrime on 20/10/2010 10:04:22 Im petitioning right now:
Hello CCP
Give drake and cane extra 300 CPU, 2 more highslots and -99% CPU to covert ops cloak.
PLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZPLZ
You try it also - maybe they listen.
I.
Edit on the serious side:
Only one thing to do:
Camp a gate or poke gate campers... you wouldnt believe how the later could be good with a windrake if you manage to find out whats on the other side with an alt...
There are several "pirating" systems which are near hisec noob spawn grounds (like Tama system) or direct hisec -> nullsec links (like PF-345... dont know if it PF-345 exactly, but its PF-3xx for sure). Go there - chances that someone is camping there are almost 100%
Regards
I.
