Urg, just lost at least an hour from the quicksave not working.
Other than that though, seems great so far. A bit more strategy required than with 3, plus the hardcore mode looks pretty cool, though too much hassle for me on the first run through. Best thing, though: new game creation that doesn't force you to play through an half hour of tutorials/plot building before letting you actually play the game!
For some reason, too, I found it very gratifying to be told by the NPCs to stick to the roads, ignore them, and then be gang-****d by a hoard of scorpions 50 yards from the starting town. Like, "Who the f*** do you think you are, you level 1 twerp?"

Oh Hai, someone from the bitter NMA folks here.
I played all the Fallout Games, I have to say that Fallout 1 were good games at there time but still flawed. Especially Fallout 2 had so many pop-culture references that the literally drowned the storyline in it. Besides the starting as a simple tribesman/woman but then become a master computer-hacker and energy-weapons specialist?
Fallout Tactics was also a good game but not a RP, so a bit of a dissappointment in that Area.
The flaw of Fallout 3 is in my opininion that the 50s style was a bit over the top and that the main storyline was rather short and also had a bit of weak plot, but still it was one of the best RPGs in a long time.

I played Fallout 1 and 2 when they came out in 97 and I must say I enjoyed both the original and sequel immensely, then tried Fallout 3 few years ago and was very disappointed by it. It never came close to the atmosphere and gameplay of its predecessors.
It seems this one have good critics, gonna give it a try in the next few days .

Bugged, boring.
4 crashes to desktop in ~3 hours, fell through the floor once.
The quests are boring, the characters are boring. You save a whole town from the grasp of a gang of escaped convicts with a 9mm pistol and noone even says "thanks" or "yipee!". Everyone just goes on like nothing happened, including the army force that camps outside the town just because of the convicts.
A blind Deathclaw chased me pretty much everywhere I ran, killed all the NPCs in its path, a second Deathclaw joined in. The only way to get rid of both was to just get out of sight and sleep for a few hours (without sleeping, they would catch up with me eventually).
I don't know, I wasn't a 100% convinced fan of the original Fallout 3 (because of all the "fake" scenery, doors that you cannot interact with etc.), but so far New Vegas is as much a disappointment as e.g. Gothic 3, Risen ...
How to PVP: 1. buy ISK with GTCs, 2. fit cloak, learn aggro mechanics, 3. buy second account for metagaming

Well, i'm pretty impressed so far. Since steam allowed me to play it i've been spending every spare moment hard at it.
Only bugs i've encountered is having my 'steam achievements' not count in steam, which is fine, and autosaves sometimes disappearing when you shut the game down, but there's plenty of normal saves to use.
As far as the game itself goes, i usually end up skipping most dialogue in modern RPGs because it's written almost as an afterthought, and bores me to tears, but for once i find myself reading and enjoying most of it. The responses you can choose are similarly well done, and the complexity of interactions is simply mind boggling. Especially later. Only reason i'm here now is because New Vegas politics caused me mental fatigue. There's so many possibilities and it's all done so well. All the time they would have had to spend making the models and textures for the game was spent on characters and plot, and it really shows in how rich the game world is.
Like someone else said, it's Fallout 3 done right, but not only that, it raises the bar once again for these types of nonlinear RPGs in terms of 'sandbox' playability. Can see this being a game i'll be playing for quite awhile to come.

I beginning to run into some irksome AI stupidity. Not game breaking or frustrating, but immersion wrecking.
On a whim(and a redundant save) I decided to go massacre the Ultra Lux Casino. Normally in Fallout 3 when you start shooting and EVERY body in the house realizes there's a massacre going on. They'll either run or fight.
Now in New Vegas, I put a sniper round into the guard's face, the guards attack, but nobody else does anything. Ok... so maybe they don't respond to guard kills. I kill the nearest civilian, nothing happens.
Theres a blackjack table with a dealer and two players, shoot the dealer, shoot player one, player two does nothing. He's covered in the blood of two men(I <3 blood mess) and hes doing nothing.
I put him out of his misery.
I walk into the bathhouse, and start shooting people left and right, at most they'll react with a "ew gross" and continue walking on like nothings happening.
I shoot people in their beds, their partner doesn't wake up, shoot them too. I finally ran out of ammo, gave up and reloaded the save.

Edited by: Haydee Onna on 23/10/2010 06:10:56 Just ran into the most annoying bug so far: the rep for one of the trade factions (Crimson Co.) seems to be crossed with that for the NCR. After helping a diehard Republic citizen exact bloody vengeance on the company's traitorous leader, the beige-coats suddenly want me dead at all costs and the Caravaners don't bat an eye at me.
Also immersion-breaking was when I decided to massacre the Brotherhood outpost (and then reload a previous save, of course) and my Brotherhood companion was more than happy to partake in the slaughter. That and the aforementioned NPC obliviousness does take a fair chunk out of the immersion factor...

This, there's a lot of "QA dep. at lunch, back in an hour"-type errors, but at it's core the game is pretty freaking awesome. A lot of the notes you get should really be quests, and a few seem pretty broken at times too. It's like they got halfway through designing the quests and then ran out of time but still included them as notes.
Protip, semi-spoiler: When you meet Mr House for the first time and finish your conversation, move to your left, hack your way through security and head up to the control room, murder the frozen cyborg freakshow bro of humanity and read the new note. I bet this is what the QA guys were working on instead of fixing bugs, a big fat cool story bro directed at everyone else who worked on this game.

Yup.
And i'd just like to say that before when i was speaking of how nonlinear and deep the game was i was speaking of things that make sense somehow, they give you lots of plot options there. Unprovoked killing sprees towards harmless civilians would not be included, but will gain you the attention of local law enforcement.

I would not recommend that route the first playthrough. Decided to go back and just do what house wants me to instead, because there's too many variables to balance on my own without a better understanding of the factions and business owners, and how it all plays out.

Originally by: Professor Tarantula [ Everyone brings it up when you talk to them after, and even mention it as you walk past sometimes. If you want the entire town to just jump up and down saying "yipee" perhaps you'd be better off in a Zelda or Mario game.
What seems comically wrong is that nothing really changes in that town. The army doesn't move away or change their plans, the inhabitants don't leave the casino etc. ...
Quote:
Yeah, the guy there says it's impossible odds, and gives you directions around the area to avoid the deathclaws. I tried to take them on also as a big mighty level 3, and had my own comical failure. Plan on going back when i'm armed to the teeth.
Once again i'm going to suggest you'd be happier with another game, maybe in this case Halo, where you're taken by the hand through the entire linear game and don't have to think.
Um, what guy? I went there from Novac (through the mountains) and never met anyone before I reached the blind deathclaw. It doesn't bother me that it's hard to kill, what bothers me is that you cannot get rid of it by running/hiding unless you *sleep*. Which is stupid, silly, bad game design. No need to get offensive just because you're a fanboi and can't see what's wrong with that kind of game design. It all feels broken, makes no sense.
Another bug: companions and monsters get stuck on simple obstacles (e.g. road blocks), unable to walk around or jump over - you can just shoot them while they are stuck.
I don't know, the graphics look dated too with their low polygon count and it's really sad that they haven't improved on their dialogues since Morrowind... All NPCs of the same type in a particular area are just repeating the same inane mutterings over and over again, bah.

Gameplay = good, much more complicated than Fallout 3 and the crafting is great and I love weapon mods and ammo and the variety of thrown, mellee and explosives.
After that it all goes to hell, Romans? seriously wtf and then you have mongol hordes? space ghouls? wtf where Obsidian smoking.

Yeah same here, just found the note you get when you do it quite hilarious. As far as I understood it the main quest is over once you kill Mr House? I just reloaded right after I did it. If I'm wrong that's awesome because it implies that there's even more depth to the story than I've seen so far.

Well, the ultra good guy route is over if you kill him. If you've been playing it as a nice person it'll be your first negative karma hit, and it starts you down a more shady path.
From there you can either be independant and customize the future of the game to your liking via "yes man", which is a bit ovewhelming, or you can take orders from someone like Ceasar instead.

New Vegas has something, not sure exactly what it is and there are plenty of bugs and the Gamebryo engine is getting dated but there is a charm to the way the game feels. Characters are interesting despite the dodgy dialogue and the soundtrack brings it together.
Hardcore mode is great as well it really changes how it plays, having to worry about survival on top of the current quest makes a massive difference.
