It's been boring. And it's been boring because the enemy refused to fight. While that is their right, I think conquer should be easier when the defender doesn't try to fight or delay you.
tl;dr What I propose is a mechanics that makes conquering a system harder than it is today, if there is enemy presence. But makes it straightforward if they fail to show up.
Basically, the idea is to have resistances on every structure from POS to iHubs that depend on the owners presence. Not really a lot, but some presence.
Every ship present in space and outside of a POS would add some points to the resistances, up to, for example, 95%. With this resistance level structures should have around three times the efective hitpoints that they have today. The base hitpoints (with zero presence) should be in the range of a fith of nowadays efective hitpoints. Suggested numbers:
Capital: 10 BS: 5 Cruiser: 3 Frigate: 1
This way the defender can make life difficult for the attacker even with a fleet of 100 cloaky frigates. The attacker will have the option to chase the enemy fleet to reduce the resistance (work for the support fleet/large fleet battles) or move to another system. Or simultaneous attacks. An static defence will no longer be useful.
As a consecuence of this mechanics, defending one or to systems will also be easier that it is today, allowing for strongholds (opportunity for small alliances and heroic last stand).
It would also add a role for small gang harassing, because you can have several of this gangs reinforcing undefended structures in enemy territory, preparing the ground for the large fleet to come and finish them. To compensate for this and avoid spending heaps of time repairing structures all over your dominions, automatic refill of the shields should take place in no more than a few hours after finishing reinforce mode.
Finally, I see a problem with big capital fleets jumping from system to system destroying structures before the defender can react. Despite the fuel problem that would mean, I think that a counter is needed. Something like a 100% resistance for 5 minutes (+burning strontium?) before real damage is done.
Thx for reading. Let the trolling beging.

Agree 100%.
Nowadays sovereign system is broken and a whole revamp is needed, therefore, conquest and all related stuff is broken too. Taking as basis your idea, adding new and fresh concepts and polishing it all would bring us a brand new source of fun. I don't have extra ideas you can add to your cool one, this is just a +1 reply!

So in order to defend any system i simply get 200 people in frigates warping between safespots for an hour or two. All it requires is 1 person alive, rest can be afk.

Instead of setting a maximum resists why not do it like ship resists that get stacked? Each additional person reduces the gap between the existing resists and the maximum by X percent.
So for example, the first person in the system gives a resistance modifier of 5%. The second person give a resistance modifier of 95*0.05 (5 percentage of the difference) for 4.75 giving a total of 9.75.
If a someone else in the system it goes up to 9.75+ 90.25*0.05 =14.2%.
This way a small group defenders get the majority of the bonus but its practically impossible for alliances to max out the resist bonus's.
The question is do you have POS bubbles and cloaks interfere with the effect? to stop people hiding for the bonus? Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

Yea, that could be a valid tactic. Probably the attacker would simply go to the next system and wreak havoc there.

Yea, the stacking idea seems perfect. Different % for ship class and would work beautifully.

I think that allowing cloaks (now that I rethink it, only Covert Ops) would allow small alliances to deploy a small force with some effect, while making the POS bubbles interfere with the effect would make afk caps inside a POS innefective.

I like the idea. I would only make compulsory that to add to the effect, the ship must be in grid, uncloaked and outside a POS shield.
