To be able to do shortcuts properly, we saw no other option than discontinuing the current "set-chat-focus-on-any-key" functionality. Annoying as it might be for the chatty of you to begin with, this will by far be outweighed by the benefit of freeing up the entire keyboard, which has in a sense been held ransom by the chat focus functionality. Instead, there will be a special "set chat focus" command that can be bound to any key (SPACE by default).
This is how Perpetuum works, I HATE IT! HATE. IT. So many people lost mechs the police from having someone locked, and then thinking they are typing in chat "he is outside" - they would get "he" is out, but spacebar activated all your guns = boom!
So what I see happening in Eve is: Hanging about on a station, most people are on vent, some are not. Enemy fleet warps in. I type in an intel channel some info hit enter, then type some more without hitting space first "Get in fleet guys." or something to that effect, but T targets something, like the station I'm ready to dock in, and F fires all my guns. I see this change costing me a lot of ships.

Originally by: Tippia It's excellent news, because now, you're no longer locked out of using 320% of the keyboard for more useful things just because of a poorly implemented chat feature.
Yeah it will probably be good for most of the people who play Eve. Not for me because of...

My current ship hangar is not very forgiving, I will have to get more T1 BC to get used to it.
Also the thread title was quoted from the blog... I should change it.

Originally by: Matalino Problems with your "problem":
1) The shortcut for "T" is to show info, not to lock target. 2) F activates drones, not guns so if you don't have drones, you don't have a problem. 3) You can change the shortcuts to suit your play style.
LOL, thanks of your input. It was an example situation not meant to be technically correct. If you map the target and fire function to any sort of module off to A - Z, I'm pretty confident that I can construct a sentence that would both lock and fire.

I hopped onto the test server to give it a go. Its great! I also have not yet found a way for a Noob like me to do anything stupid (on default settings) yet.
It is nothing like the mess Perpetuum had where you have to hit the enter key before you type anything. If you are in the chat window you can keep chatting in the chat window after each line. Spacebar just brings up the chat window.
Feels nice, flexible and smooth, nice work CCP Optimal.
