what ive might have done against the rules is: in my entry ive placed more than one perspective view but i needed that to show the diversity of shape( that it can be fat from one angle, slim from the other..etc) and also little sketches to show my process.. that was a part of presentation wich is one of the criteria..

i don't get it either. why is such a design, fitting perfectly into the eve universe and looking fantastic while doing so not in the finals? and i don't want to argue the aesthetics of the other contenders here. that's very much personal reference. still when it comes to designing a star-ship for eve, you need to stay in touch with the factions layout principles to make it work in-game. i don't think enough focus was put on that point.

wow this is nice.
Deviant Art made an excuse for their selection and wrote on their site that some models were disqualified because of possible shader issues. Pretty cheap excuse, if you ask me.

I also don't get it. The rules clearly say that the ships MUST fit into the EVE-Universe. Many ships of the semi-finalists don't fit into EVE. Do the DA judges actually know EVE? I seriously doubt it.
Another MUST-rule of the content was that no watermarks, signatures etc are allowed. There was a signature on one of the chosen semifinalists (which got replaced due to that). There is a signature on another semifinalist, obviously that doesn't count as disqualification there. So ... the DA judges are pretty sloppy about their own rules.
And yet they argue that violation of a SHOULD-rule prevented several otherwise good candidates to become semifinalists?
Very odd. Even their excuses aren't good
I am glad that CCP stepped in and are talking with them now *cheers CCP*.
This is an awesome idea and absolutely great, don't let crappy judges ruin it!
And next time you do some community thing ... go the whole way and don't falter in the middle of the way: you should have let the community chosen those semi-finalists. It seems they have a MUCH better understanding of EVE and art than those DA judges |

How To Add Insult To Injury 101
One thing that would ease a little of the sting of shock over this obvious disaster, would be to hand out the "Free Gift to qualified entries" as originally promised in the official contest rules.
NOTE: Apparently someone has EDITED the official rules to now read: "All entrants to the contest who provide a valid email address and an entry that generally complies with the depiction of a starship as required by these Official Rules will receive a code provided by Sponsor at no charge to download a free copy of EVE Online." No, I'm not kidding take a look: http://st.deviantart.net/news/eve-online/rules/rules.html?6
That's nice, we can have a free EVE download, which is already available 24 hours a day from the EVE website to anyone. All Eve players know this, for those that don't here's the link:

This is REALLY the icing on the cake, well done DA.

The code they get is for a longer-than-usual trial period. I don't know for sure, but the comments seem to indicate that it's a 28 or 30 day trial period. So we have the normal everyday trial which gives you 14 days, the Buddy Invite trial which gives you 21 days, and the DA "I coulda been a contenda" trial of 30 days.
It's a nice gesture by CCP to give everyone an opportunity to experience the world of EVE in order to gain a greater understanding of the artistic style of the universe they're designing for.

I have an email account listed in my deviantart account settings.. I think everyone has to put in an email account as well to sign up to deviantart ... still no prize mail in my inbox though. Did we have to display the email address with our submission? or send some specially 'just for you' note, with email, to deviantart admins? or or or... some have commented that my ship goes by the rules but - hey who really knows? We don't even have a list of what failed and why do we? hah what a joke
For those that say that they should stick to the contest results so far because of rules and such - they keep changing it all as they go!! ffs ..if it was a PLEX maybe I'd be kicking more of a stink, but since its a free copy of EVE Online hahahaaaaa DA dodgy at all?

i got a 30-day CD-key. it was "* Valid only for new and trial accounts. Cannot be used to add time to existing subscriptions to EVE Online."
still, whole deal feels as if DA wasn't prepared for the number and quality of competitors. LA battlecruiser addition/removal and commentary. too casual. even if all was just marketing, it's tremendous opportunity lost. i don't really see how can they get out of this mess without CCP stepping in. ________________________________ : Forum Bore 'Em : Foamy The Squirrel - [jedi handwave] "There is no spoon." |

Ok well since it seems they've sent out to people that I assume had gone correctly by the rules - could anyone tell me what elements in my submission that IS (not maybe) unacceptable in regard to the rules?

dA getting full room aggro for this. Even on the dA site. Poor judging is just one of the problems. The fact that they let in an entry that did not follow all the stated rules says volumes about the quality of their judges. Also the vast majority of the finalist seems to make up of entries that came in the last few days of the competition also give rise to suspicions that the judges were "in a hurry" so to speak.
To top it of, the judges lack of understanding of the world of EVE was a disaster waiting to happen. You don't ask a professional judge in a dog show to judge a cat show! Imagine the outcry of such judges if they failed the top few favorite cats in the show cause they did not know how to roll over and beg.
And the final straw that broke the camel's back was the rather vague rules and the lack of clarifications when questions were asked.
For example, rules said clearly no watermarks or personal /corporate logos. But what about other logos? A lot of entries included logos from the four factions. I myself included Amarr and Gallente logos on my entries. Some included icons as well. Was that cause for disqualifications? No answer from dA. I and quite a number of other entries also added more information in their images. Since I was designing the ship solely based on the EVE universe. I added some stats, bonus descriptions and a short note about the ship and it's role. I also pointed where the hard points on the ship were for the guns that would fit in the EVE universe. There was nothing stated in the rules about this. Was that cause for disqualifications? No answer from dA. Also some people entered more than 7 images of their ship. The rules said minimum of 6 but did not say anything about a maximum. Some entrants believed that you had to add a small human logo in the images to show the proper scale of the ship. Is that official? Not sure. Did not add a damsel in distress in proper scale in my entries. Many entrants added both height and length of the ship as well when the rules called for length of the ship but did not say anything about other measurements.
It was clearly stated 6 line drawings and one OPTIONAL 7th image "glamor" shot in full color or 3D. To me optional meant optional. I did not waste my limited time on the glamor shot. If you look at all the finalist, they all had really nice 7th glamor shot. As artist, did the judges focus mostly on the OPTIONAL glamor shots for their selections while ignoring the less nice 6 image entries?
I was under the assumption that all entries were to receive some sort of free gift thingy in the form of a code to activate a free trial account or something like that. Since I'm a full paying subscriber, it was pretty useless to me. But I do notice that since I entered my two ships, I have not heard anything from dA or the free gift thingy. Which makes me wonder if my entry was seen at all? And I'm not the first one to wonder this openly. Anyway my two ships:
Gallente-Dauphan Amarr-Seraphim
Not trying to be a sore loser here but there are many questions that need to be answered and dA's silence leaves much to be desired.

It seems that CCP originally sent 500 codes to DA to distribute, with the second batch only arriving in the last day or so. According to what I read in the DA thread (though the particular location eludes me), they should be distributing them, though I haven't received mine yet either. IIRC, also according to the post that mentioned that, the DA people in charge of this don't keep track of which entries qualify or not, so a reasonable inference would be that everyone who entered is due to get a code... whenever they get around to it. |

Well obviously it's not as pleasing as the LA_BattleCruiser! Less artistic effort!
But seriously, it's great. Awesome in its awesomeness! I can't find anything wrong! You must have spent hours especially on the 7th image since it looks like a paint job in Photoshop rather than a 3D render. I would proudly fly that ship. It's pure Caldari. And that might be the problem? The judges don't know EVE and the certain factional traits found in their ship designs might just baffle people who don't know the EVE universe. Like chunky non-symmetrical ships and a factions fascination with paper thin half transparent fins.
Would be nice if dA also showed the disqualified entries and put up a small reason as to why. Something just short and to the point so at least people know. I feel like I'm caught in a wormhole now.

Edited by: Ishina Fel on 22/10/2010 10:37:05 In the end, for many entries the "small reason why" will boil down to the judges simply liking something else better. There are only 15 slots, no matter how you twist it.
BTW, I largely agree with the (updated) 15 finalists that were chosen. Nearly all of them would make good ships for the game. There are only three I don't like, and one of those is entirely personal bias.

Sure, nearly all of them would make somewhat acceptable ships. But the things is, there were so many others that would fit so much better and were just plain better. Here's 40 entries that they could have chosen semi-finalists from and nobody would have been upset.

Thanks for the A-OKs :) I haven't received any negatives so its looking more likely that it passes I guess... Completely agree with some DA input, just some quick reason why something qualified or didn't would be a good move on DAs part.
Could it really just be incompetence and a lack of seriousness at play here? I mean its not like the 1st prize is a smiley face and a pat on the back.. how many judges actually judged this or is it just one person I wonder :S Has that been stated already? --------------------------------------------- Francis Wolcott: "I am a sinner that does not expect forgiveness. The most obvious turd in the ointment was the LA battlecruiser. To see that in the final fifteen throws the judges entire method into question. It was not excellent in any way, basic skills, basic presentation, could barely read the schematics as a 3D shape and to top it all a clear rules violation. Then you see it removed and the runner up is one of the finest entries submitted. How could the first possibly have placed higher than the second? Then you look around at the other finalists and realise that only 2-3 of the top 100 entries are there...
It's like they're judging a race:
Judge: "yes, those guys did finish fastest but their times were kinda close to each other (and I think that one on the end runs professionally) besides, I think that guy isn't wearing matching socks. Let's pick a wide range of finsh times so that next time people enter one of our races everyone knows they have a chance..."
Entrant: "doesn't that kinda defeat the point of the race? I've been training for months!"
Judge: "Who are you again? Ah, you're new here? Being a little mean spirited aren't you? The winners are real people, who are you to criticise?"
Entrant: "But if you'd just pick the fastest people we couldn't criticise! And that guy over there was riding a bike!"
Judge: "Ah yes, hadn't noticed. Tell you what, we'll put one of the top guys through instead, happy now?"
And I have submitted three entries, and received no time codes. At this stage I only really care about them because it would be confirmation of whether or not I was disqualified. -
Nooo! The cake can't be a lie!!

There are a lot of good designs and tbh CCP should add a new battleship for each race using the ideas from the Tornado. Seeing as the Caldari already have an ewar bs give us a caldari bs that can launch 5 heavies please .
My favourites
Minmatar - Tornado Gallente - Aquilon Caldari - Naru-Kami
And even though it is desinged to be a bc model i really think it would fit to be a bs model Amarr - Precursor

I don't think that ships like the Peregrine or Tornado ever had a chance to win. CCP is searching for something useless they can give us as a present for christmas, a Super-Shuttle or something like that. Most of the semi-finalists fullfill this requirement.

I could have sworn that when I originally signed up for this, somewhere it was stated that people who entered successfully who were players of eve would receive some special in-game gift. Now I can't find anything to support this memory I have. :/ It only makes sense that there is something for those people who have absolutely no use for a limited trial download key.
