Ok so I was thinking why don't strip miners do and damage to ships . It's as simple as thinking of a saw. I can cut wood and if you think that's all it can cut... Well stick ur hand in and get some learning.. Any how I was thinking they should have it putting out some damage . Now I'm not talking allot but atleast enough to defend aginst a friget

It is an interesting idea, but one that speaks more to gameplay issues than common sense.
If they gave them weapon capacity, they would have to be bad enough that people wouldn't fit them on warships.
You also have to consider that CCP wants people to team up as much as possible, and use escorts for undefended haulers and miners... Not that that is an ironclad reason to say no.
From a technical standpoint, how would they work? Meaning what skills would you need to use them as weapons? The Mining skills are about drilling rocks. Are you going to add a bunch of Gunnery Skills to the prerequisites for Mining Lasers?
And even from a "Roleplay" / Internal Logic perspective, you can just as easily argue "Yes, while a mining laser could damage a ship, mining lasers are not sold with weapons grade tracking/operations software, etc. IE they aren't weaponized by the manufacturer. The counter-counter argument could be Rigs that allow Mining Lasers to target ships :-p
Back to gameplay persepctive, mopst mining ships are given Drone bays for defense, which should be quite effective against Frigates.
And finally on to effect... A Frigate can flipper WANTS you to shoot them. So what exactly are you gaining in this situation?

Wow Where to start. Yes I can see ur point on the fact that the game wants people to team up. And yes I have drones but let's be honest . What good are my drones on a would be attacker? In fact most people are hopeing you have your drones out just to get agro on you. They know drones don't do real damage. Now on to added skills I don't care who you are or what ur toon is set up for in game YOU HAVE SOME Gun skills. Now I'm not saying rethink the strip miner . I'm saying as ther are difrent types of launchers and did mining lasers why not add one more . Yes make the pre requs to include weponising of a strip miner . Then you can have a rig to boost the damage . And equipment to add to ur ship that would help with tracking or locking on ship. To me it's just one more change to the game that would make things interisting. And and far as the graphics of the game and so on. Well I'm shire they can figger that out. Their all ready figger out how to get me to drop 15 bucks a month X 4 that's more then one game a month for x-box or ps3. So I have every once of faith in ccp to amaze me with something cool and dif

I can see the reasoning behind this, but it also opens up the "let me salvage my enemies ships right out from under them!" option.
Not to mention the "why can't I break up asteroids with my tachyons, then go pick up the bits?" argument.
Now, excuse me while I go armour rep an ice chunk.

Get tech II drones and only attack new players when they canflip you. If they are very new Tech I will do the trick also.

Actually since only mining barges and Exhumers can fit Strip miners this wouldn't ever be a problem.
Of course my personal opinion is that barges, exhumers and industrials need more PG so they can fit hull appropriate tanks.

This is a thought that I have occasionally brought up from time to time whenever the subject of mining comes up (which is usually after we pop a barge).
The basic gist of it is... let mining lasers MINE hostile ships to death!! The cycle and duration stay the same, but tracking is added to it. Damage is decided by the yield of the laser. If the cycle completes and the damage is dealt, you have minerals/salvage/etc. in your cargohold.
It would honestly make for some pretty funny lolfleets.
"Dude!!! How did your Thorax die to a pair of Hulks?????" ".... they... they mined me to death..." _______________________

Why can't guns that do MORE DAMAGE simply destroy asteroids faster than lowly strip miners?

Or just give things like the Hulk a 99% energy cost reduction in strip miners and jack up the PG to a level that 1% = the current cost. Thus ships that they are designed for are the only ones that can use them. Completely eliminating the "make them bad enough" factor entirely.

Glad to see this is turnin some heads. I was thinking ya add some skill books in this Ya add some rigs to help tracking , range and heat disapation. This ident jut something that would effect miners an can flipers. This would help the market and take some of the sleep out of peoples eyes whil their mining and ha. Make a tourney out of how many people you can kill with ur miner and it would be funny to see how people fit a miner to be a tackler. And it would blow some peoples minds. Ok so ccp wants people to play nice and join up well have a hulk gange. Dont let other ships use strip miner. Keep it to ore and exumers.

Using strip miners is a ship special ability of mining barges and their tech2 variants (exhumers) so that would be a completely friggin redundant waste of time.

I have thought this for years! Would be awesome if they would do it!
But on a side note, drones do hurt lol. I have taken out cruisers in my hull and do a search on you tube of pvp bulk, very good times to be had but could be more

Or you could just bait them in mining cruiser or battle badger.
The crux of the matter lies not in the need for the ability to go offensive in a mining vessel, but in the way in which you mine. If you guys didn't take the easy route of jetcan mining and used secure containers ( greed and speed being the usual factor)the can flipper would not have a target.
The instant a miner jetisons ore into a can, it is no longer his/her property.
If you wish to fight, do as the flipper wants and go get your finest fighting ship and attack him. Otherwise, use secure containers.

Workable or not, an interesting Idea.
Tracking should probably be an issue, these things arent designed to be used on fast moving objects so if you dont have any gunnery support skills your not gonna hit anything. This means pure indy toons do squat. The cycle time is another consideration, I doubt any engagement involving a mining barge is gonna last 180 secs unless its up against a velator or somesuch (hero faction fit hulks aside) so maybe a small, constant damage application throughout the cycle?
One thing to consider might be the fact that TII strips use crystal charges. Rather than a Veldspar crystal, possibly fit an EMP or explosive crystal? Bonus to tracking and some improved ability to damage ships? "uh oh, he's stopped mining...i smell a crystal swap"
One module that could be introduced could be an ORE combat reconfiguration module to allow Strip miner reconfiguration as a weapon system to deal with pesky pirates. The ORE techies are well used to dealing with pirates, why wouldnt they come up with a way to give barges some teeth?
Yeah, interesting Idea Dentevard, given how CCP take months/years to fix existing content issues I suspect it could happen on the 12th of never but still, +1 for thinking outside the box

Just a crazy idea, what if strip miners could do damage directly to hull?
Assuming a strip miner takes roughly 2 minutes to cycle, you could apply damage after the miner completes a full cycle. If you applied the damage at the start of the cycle, the miner's ability to shut down in the middle of a cycle would be abused. It also means that a lone barge/exhumer must last more than 4 minutes to have a possibility of killing a frigate, but miners traveling in groups could take down a small target in 2 minutes. (a small eternity in eve)
Make it small enough that it won't insta-pop a frigate with 3 strip miners. (so long as the frigate isn't nano-fitted) It would be a nasty surprise to have your tackle frigate to go from full shield/armor/hull to gone.
Just a thought.

If your going to make it apply damage only at the end of it's cycle it better damned well be able to insta pop a frig hell it should be able to insta heavy tanked cruiser if it lasts that long.
Because the odds of it lasting that long are somewhere between 0 and non-existent.
