There is a Fallout-MMO out there based on the Fallout 1-engine. Never bothered getting into it, but those that are playing it says it kicks ass. Got gangs, city-capturing and everything.

I hope you're not talking about this one. It's stuck in legal limbo atm. ____________________

There was once a game called Neocron which was made by the creators of Black Prophecy, and it was completely kick ass.
In terms of atmopshere, a lot like eve. Very dark settings, post apoc, hardcore pvp, clans warring against eachother for control of outposts, people scamming, people greifing, people joining a clan and stealing all the shared weapons, pretty much everything you could get away with in eve, you could there. Everyone compared it to fallout because of the graphics, atmosphere, etc. KK, the company that made it ended up getting bought out and taken over by a completely different entity which decided to make Neocron 2, then 2.1, and along the way completely destroyed the game. 2.1 still exists and is up but has horrible connectivity issues and honestly the classic neocrons graphics where better than this ones.
If the original KK made black prophecy i would have high hopes, because it would be a real competitor for eve with their dark atmosphere creating abilities, but see'ing what they did to NC... i have no hope for them.

While you are waiting you may check out Fallen Earth. I'm actually am just coming back from it and it has been a pretty fun game though still needs a little polish work to certain area's. I'm hoping I can see the new combat patch before my sub runs that is supposed to make the guns more in line with mutations.

I was all about that game for years before it came out, and was playing it on day one.
Fallout: New Vegas is clearly a poke at them, with the hoover dam and everything. The Fallout IP seems to be laying claim to the entire post apoc genre, which is a bit silly.
If the Fallout MMO does get made it'll be the final nail in the coffin for Fallen Earth, one of the best indie MMOs since EVE. It's really a shame mutations existed at all the way they are, imo, otherwise myself and many others would still be playing.

Fallout MMO is not developed or published by Bethesda and I hope it will turn out to be a great game as the development process is handled by Chris Taylor and he is behind Fallout and Fallout 2.
The legal process regarding this game has been a fiasco from day 1. Fallout franchise is owned by Bethesda since Interplay (the original owner) went bankrupt.
Bethesda agreed to allow Interplay to develop and publish Fallout Online game, after Interplay reformed a few years ago. Basically, they allowed a company that created Fallout universe to work on it again even though they sold their franchise.
Bethesda suddenly changed their mind and decided to file a lawsuit against Interplay because they didn't start developing a new fallout game (that was a contract obligation), which wasn't really true because Interplay actually published some of it's progress on their new website and forums.
Bethesda promptly lost their lawsuit in a kinda comical way and the game development process continued. Bethesda said though thats its gonna file another lawsuit against Interplay and try top stop fallout online development, but the game is probably gonna get published anyway.
