Hi,
I could need some inspiration.
We're a very small corp with 2-3 active players. While we're open for PvP we don't really like piracy. Maybe we did it wrong but attacking someone who's not ready/able to fight back isn't really that thrilling. Only thing I liked was the chance to make some serious ISK by attacking haulers or faction (fitted) ships. But thats rare..
Then we tried factional warefare a while. But the restriction to travel is a no-go for some of us. 50% of the empire space becomes enemy territory.
So we reconsidered our goals. What could be most fun for us? One thing we'd really like is to annoy the "big ones". They annoyed us long enough ^^ We live in a high sec border region with nice shortcuts into null sec. Every time we traveled there we found several camps. Blobs and bubbles everywhere. The entry systems into null sec are guarded quite good.
Our idea: while we're not able to destroy such camps in a 2-man fleet we're surely able to bug them big time ^^ Hit and run tactics. Scouting, warp at range, take some of them out and run. Maybe by having a backdoor ready.
My question: does someone have experiences with that kind of PvP? Very few against many? What should we keep in mind? What are viable tactics, dos and don'ts?
Most important question: what kind of gear is appropriate? Minmatar comes to mind first ofc. Nice agility and high alpha is very handy to generate WTF-moments among our opponents. A black-ops operation including covert bridge seems best suited - get in and out hidden and unexpected.
But what else could be viable? Amarr? Nice range and alpha as well! Or Gallente? The drone line. Very versatile and with sentries able to work at range to. Both are ammoless in addition, very handy if it takes a bit longer.
I guess Caldari and missiles are out? We have to hit fast, no time for travel time I guess. Rails seem not that powerfull in small groups. ECM isn't that usefull as well because we want to be gone already when ECM could have some use. Or did I miss something here? I really like Caldari and missiles. If there's a way to use them, I would. Maybe we could exploit the amazing ranges Caldari offers? Sniping Eagles from >200km? Or Cerbs? Tengu is also very powerful at range...
Thanks for any advice! -

You need a tackler and a pounder. That's really it. Practice your tackle so you don't die in two seconds.
Or
Stealth bombers in lowsec/nullsec. Kill mission running BS's.

Rule #1: Know what you fly, know what they fly, know how to fight. You don't have numbers and brute force on your side, so you need to use knowledge of ships and game mechanics to compensate. Stay away from fleets which will rip apart your ships; attack fleets which you have an edge over. For example, if you're in a MWD reliant battlecruiser (nanocane,) you'll want to stay away from a gang of stealth bombers, since they can hit you when you have sig bloom from your MWD. (This means that one Rapier to tackle you, and you're dead.) Stay away from Falcons unless you're flying ships with ECCM and a high sensor strength. Stay away from Curses unless you're passively tanked and don't need cap too much. Stay away from battleship-heavy gangs unless you have the means to reduce incoming damage from them. (TDs, neuts, range, ECM) Etc.
Rule #2: Don't try the same trick too often. If you bash a few of them with nanoships, expect them to uncloak Rapiers and pin you down and kill you if you try doing that the next day. If you try hitting them with stealth bombers too often, they'll use instalocking arty cruisers and blast you into little fragments. If you use sniper battleships too often, they will uncloak cloaky ships right next to you, pin you down, and warp their fleet on top of you. Etc. So stay diverse with your battlefield tactics.
Rule #3: Don't fight them head on. For example, use EWAR heavy ships to lure their tacklers and faster ships away from the pack, then pound them with EWAR and DPS while minimizing the damage you take from the main gang. Or, if the enemy fleet consists of some blaster-using enemies, attack from a range where the blasters can't hit you and only a few of the enemies are doing damage. Or jam their lower-sensor-strength ships. Etc. If you really are the "underdogs," then you'll need some sort of edge over them to be able to take them out.
Rule #4: Try to figure out who is who. If you have a gang camping a gate which you want to kill, and three other neutrals in local, you'll want to know if those neutrals are likely to help out the hostile gang, or not. If not, see Rule #5.
Rule #5: Everyone is a resource. If there's a neutral in the system who is also attempting to do some geurilla-warfare tactics against mutual enemies, hit them up with a convo invite and get a fleet going. And be honorable about it; Don't gank them once you're done, or you're unlikely to get any fleets going with them in the foreseeable future.
Those are the basics. Hopefully I was useful. -------- Enemy corps raided into disbandment: Three.

lol you have no idea,
"warps in at range"
Bla Bla's Zealot pounds your face before you even lock anything lol. I think best thing for you would to go in a pair of frig size ships. A hyena and a crusader or dramiel make a nice gang. But being in frig size ships limits you to what you can shoot. If you can manage to get an arty tempest into the 0.0 system. Fit a cloak on in and then find a safespot so you cant be scanned down. Then warp to the gate at 100km and by the time you land, you will be able to lock straight away.
Then just pick something easy, e-war or small frigs / crusier is nice. Fire first volley then warp back to your safe. Staying around to try and get a second volley off will most likely get you killed.
Good luck

Anyone who enters lowsec should be ready for some PvP. If they are not its your duty to let them know they are wrong there.

Start with 2 T1 frigates set up for solo. DPS and tackle on both of them. As you begin to feel comfortable, upgrade from to cruisers to battlecruisers.
It will give you the widest target selection, will the most fun, and will cost the least of all the options so far.

A falcon, and something with some major pew pew attached. (Zealot would be excellent for that role)
Falcon decloaks scram/jam's the target, zealot web's and ganks. I like me

Sniper Munnin's are also great for Alpha'ing frig sized ships, go for the expensive ones, 1 volley them, warp back out to your safe. Have several safes around the gate you are operating at all sides, try not to use the same ones to often.
Also have cloacky eyes on the gate so you can see if they are up to something to try and catch you next time you come in. As has been said don't become predictable, change up your tactics and ships periodicly. Range and speed will be your ally, try and get their tackle to burn towards you if not in sniper ships but don't allow them to get 150km or more from their fleet so the rest can't warp to you etc.
And ofc no what you can and can't engage.

Thanks a lot for your replies. This will help.
While I see other tactics (bombers, smart bombing BSs, 2x frig...) I really like the sneaky sniper attack to gate camps. I've an covops alt ready for scouting and providing perfect warp-ins. So I guess we'll try this...after learning and dying a while with two T1 frigs ^^
Problem with said sniper attack: since we're only two (apart from my scouting alt) we need a lot of damage. So I guess there's no way around the BS class or maybe sniper HAC later. The latter only Minmatar because of the way better volley damage. -

Edited by: Abbot Laarkin on 25/10/2010 18:22:18 If you want to go "just for the lulz" find yourself a smallish gatecamp,(make a lot of bookmarks around the gate) then 3x Rooks or falcons. Wait for the GCC, or if flashy reds are on the gate even better, then jam the hell out of their tacklers every time they try to gank something. Blackbirds would be the disposable choice for this, but allowing the pirates to kill you kind of defeats the object.
The rage I've had in local from supposedly "hard-bitten pirate-types" was priceless
In our case we used 6 falcons. It was very funny.
And yes, we were very drunk at the time
Oh and a rook can survive gate guns long enough to get off a jam that can allow the "target" ship to escape.
Unless the camp is utter fail you are unlikely to get any kills (though we have once or twice), but I absolutely guarantee you will **** someone off. ----

Edited by: Berendas on 25/10/2010 22:40:12 Your ability to act against a camp with 2-3 people is largely affected by the sec status of the system. Believe it or not, it will be easier for you to mess with camps in 0.0 than in low sec. 0.0 gates don't have sentries, so campers are not required to tank constant dps, so you will find ships that are easier to kill quickly (more frig and cruiser hulls). In low sec, campers are prepared and required to tank gate guns so you will find a lot of local tank ships or the campers will have Logistics support, the former will make it hard to kill people quickly and the latter will make it literally impossible. [With your limited numbers anyway]

PvP is not for "fun". Pvp is for causing misery to others and gaining a large e-peen of killboard stats. The sooner you understand that the better.
