About 20 minutes ago, I got caught and Pod killed in a Low-sec gate camp while transferring blueprints from Jita.
Most of my isk lost (about 2 mil lost, 180K left) but I only used a frigate, and still possess my expensive ships.
So, is there a sure way to run a gate camp without giving them time to lock on my ship before warping?

Edited by: Culmen on 28/10/2010 06:27:28 So you were running in blue prints ins a frigate? That was your first and a major mistake.
The cheapest and most obvious counter is flying a shuttle.
Those ship go to warp practially instantly.
leaving you vunerable only to extremely remote sensor boosted ship and smart bombs.
so bigger does not equal better, shuttles are much better suited for BPO hauling.
other then that, use ships that can fit covert-ops cloaks, those are extremely diffucult to catch in low-sec.
All that being said, I like the way you approaching this.
Take this as an example all you noob, this is the way to ask questions.
Don't whine, ask for counter. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Edited by: Ragnar256 on 28/10/2010 06:41:05 Edited by: Ragnar256 on 28/10/2010 06:40:29 In all honesty, I never had plans on buying blueprints in the first place. I just happened upon them for decent prices
My corp is still new, and the systems we call home have very little in the way of Med projectile ammo. Since my corp is about mining, this venture could have potentially made us a lot of isk in the long run.
But lesson learned, plan out my trips beforehand and choose the fastest vessel for cargo runs.

Anything with a Covert Ops Cloaking Device will get you through most any lowsec gate camp: Covert Ops, Stealth Bomber, Blockade Runner, Force Recon, Strategic Cruiser.

Interesting. I always thought that you'd only start running the risk of being tackled before aligning when you flew at least a cruiser sized ship. I thought that pretty much all frigates aligned faster than a ship could lock into them.

Strategic Cruisers can also get through many nulsec bubble camps thanks the the Interdiction Nullifier subsystem.
Avoid Rancer and other PvP losec hotspots where smartbomb camps are common.
Excellent advice to give to someone whose most valuable item is a frigate.
OP: There is a lot of things that can lock a frigate way before it goes to warp. Even a shuttle isn't completely safe. And in 0.0 space, warp disruption bubbles can completely prevent you from warping. Your first mistake was probably taking the ship through lowsec at all. Are you sure there isn't a safer route to get to your corp?
If you really have to go through lowsec, get someone else to scout one system ahead of you in a cheap ship (you can get an infinite supply of rookie ships for free) and back off if you see any trouble. Do not warp directly from one gate to another, pirates can set up area of effect weapons (smartbombs) to catch any incoming ships and kill small stuff (shuttles, frigates) in one blow. Instead, warp to the sun or one of the planets, and only from there warp to the outgoing gate. ___________ EVE is dying! Now for real! |

An Ares with Sensor Booster has a frigate lock time of about 1 sec. Few ships will escape that. Now if you remote boost that with another ship it's practically zero. Only ships that escape that have extreme skilled pilot or you have lag. Sol: A microwarp drive? In a battleship? Are you insane? They arenĘt built for this! Clear Skies - The Movie

Evasive_Maneuvering, Navigation and Spaceship_Command skills trained up as well as the ship class skill will help a lot. Then there is also Nanofiber_Internal_Structure_I and Warp_Core_Stabilizer_I basic modules (Higher Meta level versions are better) that can be fitted.
Always 'Warp to 0' whenever you have important cargo loaded in your ship.
Also check Star_map statistics such as amount of ships active, ship and pod kills in last 1/2 hr, etc. before you enter into dangerous systems.
Last but not least, another corp mate acting as scout and making Safe_spot's will also help a lot.
Rookie_Lowsec_Survival_Guide
Avoiding_scan_probes
There's probably more guides and info that can be listed and some of this info will take some time to master.
Good luck and don't give up.

You got killed by a United gate camp in rancer. They and that system is well known for that.
Checked the kill on battleclinic. Seems you encountered a broadsword (HIC) which was likely heavily remote sensor boosted. Possibly the worst ship for you to encounter as it naturally has cruiser locking speed with the ability to tank gate guns.
Interceptors are generally not used by pirates on gates simply because they get murdered by those gate guns once they attack you.
The mistake you made was not planning your route more carefully. Once you jumped into them you were in a world of trouble.

Places to avoid in FW are Tama, Rancer, Kamela and I think there are few other systems as well but those three I can remember right of the bat for a good reason. Also Caldari is plaqued by "high sec islands" so always check where that "cheap offer" is being sold before you buy it.

Looking at United's recent kills, I'd say they use smarties plenty against shuttles.
Also, can stealth cloaks be equipped on frigates, or are they only useful on stealth bombers.

Cloaks can be fitted on anything but they make your ship pretty useless for fighting. Covert Ops cloaks can be fitted to covop ships and are awesome. Sol: A microwarp drive? In a battleship? Are you insane? They arenĘt built for this! Clear Skies - The Movie

Lots of good advice in this thread.
From the sounds of it those BP's were intended to benefit your corp, great. In cases like this consider making Logistics/ purchasing runs a corp-wide "event". This would allow you to have a few scouts out ahead. Social play is fun
Cloaks etc. are all good, but it's hard to beat a decent scout when trying to move around low/ null sec safely. Make sure your scouts know what a Heavy Interdictor is, and what the various races ones are called. Also ensure your scouts have effects turned on in Esc. menu and keep an eye open for sensor booster/ smart bomb graphics.
You/ your corpies may consider this kind of op dull, but it would make very good practice for when/ if you decide to get more into PvP.
Did I mention scouts are good? ----

There are basically two kinds of cloaking devices.
The normal cloaks (improved, prototype and all the faction cloaks) these can be fitted to any ship, but for the most part, nerf your speed and prevent you from warping.
The covert-ops cloak on the other hand, can only be fitted to certain ships, cov-ops and stealth bombers are examples of this.
The most important feature of the cov-ops cloaking device is the ability to warp cloaked. Making any ship fitted with one extremely difficult to catch. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Great advice. My corp is also fairly small, so finding an optimal time where a sufficient number of members are on will be difficult, but if successful, can really help our corp grow in the long run.

Since you are Minmatar,
Train up to use a Cheetah Cov Op Frigate with a Cov Op cloak in High Slot
Use 2 Rigs - Small Low Friction Nozzle Joints I & Small Polycarbon Engine Housing I
In low slots use a NanoFiber Internal Structure II and/or Inertia Stabilizers II (careful with Inertia Stabilizers as it increases sig radius ALOT) Add a Core Stabilizer in low if you want, but usually not needed, if you get caught at all, you are prolly dead lol. Train up to use a Micro Warp drive in Mid slot
Most modules to add shields / armor are just a waste, you wont be tanking anything anyway and they will just slow ya down.
You want what I call a "Turn and Burn" or GTFO Fit, so you can run like a scared little girl!!

What minarete said
If you want to do it cheap and expendable, slap a speed fit on a vigil (yes VIGIL lol)... that thing is halfway the next gate before it finally decloacks
Downside however is that its paperthin, it could pop just by targetting it, they dont actually need to shoot at it hehe. All in all its a great deal of fun to run camps in that lil one and yes... every now and then i wake up in a fresh pod

What Ishi said. But they're so much fun for so little training time.
I use them a lot for hanging out in systems where people have . . . irritated me. Eventually it will drive them crazy.
