Edited by: Jhagiti Tyran on 06/11/2010 16:53:52 The CGI feature length WH40k movie is finally ready for release, the fans have been waiting for this for years so it had better be good. The official website has a teaser trailer on it and the CGI looks decent and about the same quality that the Dawn of war intros used with a little extra polish.
Official website
The collectors case looks nice to and comes with a unique graphic novel written by Dan Abnett.

Though I'm a fan of WH40k, that movie graphics don't look good at all. The DOW movies definitely had better production values. Heck, the star craft II movies that were NOT pre-rendered look better then that.
Still graphics aren't everything, I'm hoping the rest of the movie makes up for it. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Although I'm questioning the wisdom of releasing the special edition DVD on the 29th with any other DVD versions only available in spring of 2011. That's just as if they're ASKING to get on piratebay or similar and be heavily downloaded by the 30th of November this year. _

Well, it probably makes sense, if this is a direct-to-DVD movie. Anticipating on how "gruesome" the graphics will have to be to do the universe justice, I'm guessing we won't be seeing it in cinemas at all.

Beyond the W40K veneer it looks crap. No sign of good characterisation just a lot of CGI. The EVE movie clearskies was done with the HL2 engine it looked basic but it was a hoot as the story line and characters had depth.

Well it says it was made for the fans with no theatrical release, so they assume that the non-WH fans have no/little interest in it. That pretty much limits the budget of the thing, making hiring HQ outside work for the entire project a practical impossibility, and games workshop propably doesn't have their own dedicated veteran CGI team working for them. Big gaming companies do have such teams and have developed their own tools for things like this, so you can expect better things from them. Also, hiring blur studio to produce a few minute flashy trailer with random action scenes isn't exactly as demanding or costly as producing a full feature film.
I just hope with so little things limiting the GW original vision it might actually have a good story and be true to the brutal WH 40K universe. They only target the fans, so they might as well go all the way to catering to them.

Hehe you got it!
"Assault on Holy Terra" inspired me to write. I used to read that over and over again. It was chuffing beautiful. Bill at his absolute Godlike best. Before all those awful Space Dwarf novels.
Quote: Every loyal warrior knew that he was already dead, that there was no way he could survive the coming of the daemonic army. The soldiers fought with the desperate ferocity of hopeless men, firing until their weapons were empty, snatching up the bolters of the fallen, and facing monsters with the butts of their guns when all ammunition was exhausted. Three times the horde managed to scale the walls, and three times it was driven off by the valiant efforts of Sanguinius and the Blood Angels. Wearily the Primarch marshalled the defenders, rallying the broken, speaking words of comfort to the mortally wounded, fighting with cold, implacable fury when he was called upon to do so. Slowly though, despite his efforts, the Chaos forces managed to erode the defence. They seemed numberless as the grains of sand on a sea shore and Horus spent their lives carelessly.
I mean, does it get any better when you are 13?
I still shed tears for the travesty that wonderful, wonderful material became.

heh, never played WH 40k, and most of what I know comes from wikipedia.
but a world where the "good guys" are pretty much the Tau, which is no more than a dictatorial (and very violent) federation of several species; a universe that has Nurgle, who only really wants to be BFF with you (and brings you gifts of pestilence with it); a universe that has the Necron (Necron... just Necron), and a race that makes Gieger's Aliens look like puppies...
yeah, seems quite awesome ---

I played 40K for a number of years until I got bored of it and sold my army. At the time I had a 5000 point Blood Angel army that was fully painted, this doesn't include what I hadn't touched on yet. This army had 1 land raider, 1 land raider crusader (awesome against light armored armies which was almost every army on the field compared to a marine (Every SM army could field one except for the crusaders who could field as many as they wanted)), 4 land speeders (fast attack flyers) one of which packed a multi melta (his one goal each game was to take out one vehicle), 1 Baal Predator (heavy flamers), 1 regular predator (standard autocannon), 1 Whirlwind (long range artillery), 2 scout squads, 6 marine squads, 1 death squad (They have a chance to ignore wounds on a 4-6 and ignored psychology, my friends hated these guys), 1 heavy weapons squad, 1 Blood angel dreadnaught (H2H), 1 ranged dreadnaught, the named dreadnaught, 1 Terminator squad (i.e. super marines), and all the named characters that the Blood Angels could get.
I was planning to revamp the army some because I was actually not playing the Blood Angels to their full capacity. I had a couple of sets of jump marines (one was the honour guard for Sanguinis), and a couple more Rhino's for the troops plus a razorback for the Heavy weapon team (transport with guns). My Blood angels were supposed to be more about getting into hand 2 hand rather than sit back and shoot like the other chapters and I needed to equip them to be more mobile. I also had another Predator that was halfway finished which was going to carry a lascannon for anti-vehicle assistance and 2 more whirlwinds because I liked them so much.
Anyways I've always have seen the Tau as being neutral if not a little evil. If you believed in the greater good they were your friends and if you didn't then they forcefully remove you from the planet that you resided on. The eldar are much the same way in neutrality though they would occasionally ally with humans if it suited their long term goal.
Imperial Guard and Space marines were technically the good guys. IG being the army with throw away troops and lots of Artillery and Space Marines being the heavy hitters.
For the Evil armies you had Orks, Chaos, and Dark Eldar. For the truly evil armies you have the necrons and the tyranid who both act as hive minds and have no other goal other than to annihilate all other life.
I fought a lot of games against Eldar and Dark Eldar and usually the biggest worry I had were their lances as they could really hurt my Land Raiders. I also fought against I.G. and the guy playing them was a mortar specialist in the army so his artillery on the table top was quite impressive. Tau are pretty tough at range but if you can overcome the meatshield Kroot squads the rest of the army would generally fold within a round or 2. Necrons are tough because every soldier has incredibly powerful guns and they can rez themselves in combat not to mention the monolith is next to unstoppable. Then I fought a guy who played Chaos twice and he whooped me each time mostly because he knew the rule book inside and out, dude taught us all some valuable lessons.

OMG I Already love it
To be honest i lost track about the film months ago, I am glad it is almost out now
I ve been a hardcore wh 40 k fan since it was first published in 1987 but gave up on the gaming when GW started to dumb down the game , today i only read the novels, and play the rolelay version ' dark heresey' And with dan abnet as screenwriter, i think this will be good

that's not it, even if a world has a tomb, it can be asleep yet, and the surface is pretty much full of yummy life for them 'nids.
yet, a tomb in said planet, will make that them 'nids won't even think about landing on that planet, simply because a planet with a necron tomb has, apparently, not even a trace of psyker energy, making one think that 'nids are scared away by the pure nothingness it dwells there
so, necrons > 'nids.
They really sound like stuff from the darkest nightmares of the Manson family. I mean, a Flayed one, packing a weapon that flays away armour, cloth, skin, flesh and bone away, one molecule layer at a time.
Nevermind the Pariahs. Simply because of the Pariahs.
they also have this knack of engaging on the battlefield totally silent. ---

Never played Necrons in TT I packed TT up around the time they where introduced* but the damn Noobcrons ruined Dawn of war for ages until they where patched several times.
*incidentally they looked much cooler back then, more like a Terminator than undead skeletons.

To everybody else: Yeah yeah, Crapwow trailer generic anime manga render is 103000000000023423423423 better , wtf u guys talking bout, looks like oveur naked ugh, crap cgi my cat does it better, OMGLOL I CAN HAZ CHEZBURGUER??? WTF IS this DERP? <trollface.jpg insert> ...
To US HARDCORE WH40K FANS:
OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will download it, then buy the original, then I will somehow find an affordable version of this DeathWatch Collector's Edition , and will keep buying anything SPACE MARINE RELATED to eternity to feed my INSANE LOLWTF MADNESS of GEEKDOM ... OMG ARGH ...
on a Saner note, yes I will enjoy the movie, simply due to the Space Marine Factor ... I must admit I'm a Warhammer fanboi , both fantasy/40k fan and pretty much enjoy the IP to the fullest. Anything for the genre is good to my eyes and the movie will probably have a solid story/script and I'm hoping some gruesome scenes.
So yes my friends ... For the EMPEROR!!!
If you just stick to the latest CGIorgyfest of games like Starcraft2 (puke) yes ... fact is I was loling here in Panama when in a TV store I saw the space marine trailer as a demo for high resolution LCD screens + the Wrath of the Lich King trailer, so yes, if you like that you will probably not find the movie or anything it represents worthy of any attention.
But on my case it's different:
If you a Scott Pilgrim fan for example, you can picture yourself watching a deceptively similar (yet with wholly different storyline) crap cartoon (JUAN PEREGRINO)that tries to imitate Pilgrim's style, with a fun guy that lives with a weird woman of LGBT caliber in Quebec and they try to swing around with Korean-American men and then hilarity ensues and somehow it becomes more popular than Scott Pilgrim itself ... So how could you feel when Juan Peregrino's adventures with her lesbian friend and Korean-American girl/men/tranny date begins to go in a funny route and you are "OMG what a ripoff, this is like a bizarro Scott Pilgrims first chapters" but everybody else around says "OMG JUAN PEREGRINO's STORY IS LIKE THE BEST ... and this Scott-Pilgrim thing is lame and has crap CGI".
Yep, that.
