My partner and I come back to eve every other expansion and last time was our most lucrative period in the last four years and also the most frustrating.
We've mined all over the place over the years but last time we decided to try wormholes so we geared up, learned the ins and outs of w space and every night showed a much improved profit. We would look for a clean w hole every night (sometimes never finding one) and once an empty one with good roids was found we ducked in, mined the a,b,c's and ducked out for the night. The money was great and so after a couple weeks we'd thought we'd set up a POS of our own and rake in the dough.
The first few days were good but after the initial newness wore off we began to loose steam and isk by staying based in the w hole system instead of hi sec. We would scan for new belts every day and sometimes get lucky but most of the time we'd have to scan for new w holes and try our luck there but with limited holes out and POS upkeep to maintain our profits sagged hard.
I hear about successful corps in w space all the time and was wondering what we did wrong? I know its harder with a smaller corp but we were in the hole for a good month and profits were always terrible compared to living on the outside and finding new turf to work nightly even if we had a bad night or we got caught by deviants in w space and lost some ships. e branched out into gas mining and salvaging but we couldn't take on the beefier exploration sites so there was money on the table but still I thought an industrial corp could make it big in w space and I just wanted to ask the pros what went wrong?
Thanks guys

Well, depending on what you two were flying, I would say the best two people can reasonably do all the sites inside of would be a class 2.
The sleepers in most gravametric and ladar sites can be handled by a decent BC, but the combat sites and magnometring/radar sites will be tough to impossible for just 2 people in only BCs or BSs (depending on skills and fits of course).
The money that comes from a wormhole is going to be from the sleeper salvage most of the time. Ladar and Gravemetric sites just cause the money to spike.

Yeah we had no issues clearing out the gas and roid belts and nailing sleepers for the salvage, its just that it was much more of a profit to live outside and look for fresh holes every night instead of living in one and hoping for a belt/hole to new belts. We're assuming that we we're doing something wrong but we could clear all the sleepers we needed to get the goods, and had hulks and an orca for the mining.

I live in a Class 3 WH with members of my corp. We regularly clear several hundred mil/week from the salvage from combat sites (each). The Mining and Gas Harvesting can net us (each) anything from 0 ISK (no sites) to several hundred million (for the juiciest sites).
Then there is the ISK from other connecting WHs and from modules dropped by those players we kill. It all adds up, but there are the dry times. But, WH life isn't something that I can see as especially profitable for a 2 man corp.

I'd suggest joining a WH corp as most are happy to have extra miners and gas harvesters.
For the C1 dwellers, PI is the big earner. It's generally 70-90% of my WH earnings depending on what sites spawn.

Most c1 dwellers i know make most out of production, a large pos that cannot be attacked by anything bigger than a small b/c fleet is nice.

I think you are missing the point. They are not saying the sleepers in your grav or ladar. But the ones in your scannable sites. MAgs radars and annoms.
A 2 man group can do any site in a class 1 or 2. You just have to have the right ship with the right tank.
I run with a small group (5 ish) in a C5 and don;t bother to mine roids. Ladars yes (mmmm gas cloud goo) but I have a reactor set up to do the reactions for the gas cloud goo and that stuff can sell real well.
The point is. If all you are going to do is mine roids then a WH is not for you. If you are able to branch out and do whatever the WH throughs at you each down time you can make more ISK them most people do in years of high sec time.

I live in a C1, very small corp. You have to do everything the wormhole offers, and sometimes that isnĘt enough, not in a C1. However, we have a static exit to low sec, so I routinely explore low sec, which fills in the empty time nicely.
I react the gas, refine the ore, research and invention, and PI. The planets have everything except autotrophs (no temperate planet) and so I haul in industrial fibers and make all eight advanced items plus some POS fuel.
