I had a discussion with a friend recently regarding eve and darkfall. He had played a little eve and I had played a little darkfall. He thought that Darkfall was more player skill intensive then eve (as in it required more skill), I thought that eve was far more skill intensive then Darkfall. Now I want to see what everybody thinks. Hopefully there are a few out there who have played or play both actively.

I'm usually not a graphics snob, but darkfall looks like a 15 year old game.

Yeah, I have to agree. The graphics are pretty lame.

TL;DR: Your question sucks, rephrase it to be more specific. And now I proceed to tell you why that's probably impossible to do.
I never played darkfall, but I can tell you that you need to be a lot more specific in your question to get any meaningful sort of answer.
Different activities in eve require different kinds of "skill". For example, PvP is an entirely different category and requires a much different skillset from market manipulation.
And even narrowing it down to one activity (e.g. pvp), you can make it take as much "skill" (maybe solo taking on large blobs) or as little "skill" (mindless drone in a large fleet fight) as you want.
And even if you narrow it down to one form of an activity, the requirements will change based the players motivation for the activity. When I go scamming for isk, I need to be good at pretending to be a nice and friendly person, easy to get along with. When I'm aiming for tears, I need to be able to act like the most abrasive ******* you've ever seen. - - - Dian'h Might - C&Ps resident "internet kleptomaniac" |

I have played Darkfall for 14 days trial. It's not much, but i'm pretty sure EVE is 10 times more intensive skill-wise.

It's going to depend on what you consider "skill". In other games the combat itself can be more skill intensive than in EVE. In EVE combat you don't need to micro much in the middle of battle with the exception of overload management. A lot of the time you just orbit, scram/web/pt and hit F1 and see how things go. In other games you have a lot more to worry about, like 20+ abilities you can choose from and timers on those abilities and items/equipment you can activate as well.
In EVE a lot of the "skill" is in setting up your ship, finding a suitable target and engaging them without dying to traps setup by the enemy. This is extremely important as you cannot just insta-swap to a different fit or have someone resurrect you like in other MMORPGs. So it ends up EVE combat being more strategic instead of hitting your abilities at the appropriate time. To each his own. Never played darkfall because of the hideous things I heard about it on launch but given a few years and a complete graphics makeover it might be decent. - It's not "Play through a pre-set story, become stronger, do endgame". Gameplay is open ended, and you make your own story. Unless you're too afraid of 'pvp grief' to do anything relevant |

Played Darkfall. Noob with basic skill cannot take on a DF vet. Low skill noob in EVE can kill and EVE vet.

Played Darkfall only for a short time but my impression was that its a lots scarier than EVE - the lack of an overview means enemies can really hide (and some characters are very hard to spot when hidden in the terrain) and even in cities you're only really safe near the watchtowers (no CONCORD).
I completely suck at any kind of first-person combat in videogames, so fighting in Darkfall felt a lot more skill-intensive than in EVE; I think one could make an argument that EVE largely lacks skillshots (only bombs come to mind) and real evasive maneuvers (blocking, jumping around, crouching down) which makes fighting considerably more easy - pvp-skill in EVE is mainly about selecting the right target and then managing range, transversal, cap and overheating correctly.

For what most gamers would consider player skill, Darkfall's PvP is way more player skill intensive than EVE, it's not even close.
That said I think EVE requires more knowledge of the game than Darkfall does to be successful in PvP... and some might call that a player skill I suppose.
What both games have in common is the potential to be truly awesome Sandbox MMORPGs, but ended up being disappointments over all.

Darkfall is way more skill intensive. You're a fool if you think otherwise. ___________________

I've played darkfall for a couple of months, in order to compete with others its a grind to get you're skills up, market s broken cause everyone sells under production cost just to skill up. Its noob unfriendlier then eve, noob area got raided every 10 minutes when i played. Macro's, duping unbalanced gameplay, crappy graphics, bugs.
Basicly its eve for people who don't like internet spaceships, and for the harcore players, ther is no safe place in darkfall, you can take the damage from the guard towers indefinetly
The worst part i think is that the world is too small, only after they launched the us server you could find a quiet spot to farm.

Edited by: Jennifer Starling on 07/11/2010 11:13:45 Nothing can be less player skill intensive as the regular blob warfare in nulsec.
In small skirmish fights player skill definitely plays a far more important role but ship setup and (especially) numbers also play a very important role.
I think generally EVE PvP (and PvE) isn't very player skill sensitive, with some exceptions. The fact that fights are hardly ever equal automatically gives player skill a smaller role than in duels or in cases with balanced teams. After playing 5-6 other mmorpgs I think EVE ranks quite low what player skill importance is concerned.

after tehy increased skillgain, added rare ores to regular nodes, imprvoded the ai, completly reworked the graphics, fixed a lot of the imbalances and most players who duped themself into billions of gold left the game, made the noob places safer and added special noob dungeons.

Eve's pvp skill is about having the right people in the right ships in the right place. And even then it's about good fleet coordination, shooting primaries etc.
It might not be skill intensive in the way that an FPS is or whatever, but it's skill intensive in other ways

Exactly. It's more a social and organizational challenge than a game where your "ship control player skills" are determining the outcome of most of the PvP gameplay.

I have played Darkfall pretty extensively and can tell you that it's a joke to compare it to a sandbox such as EVE, Darkfall is a PVP game, everything you do is to make it easier to kill other people, it's that one dimensional, if you want medival counter strike, this is it.

Depends on what "skill" is.
If its the ability to play a twichy game well then Darkfall requires more skill.
If its the ability to read the situation and act/fight accordingly then EVE requires more skill(.
Wherever you went - Here you are.

you cant make a versus between darkfall and eve because this games are not on the same league

Darkfall requires way more "twitch" skill. Between aiming, switch through eleventy billion different spells & skills, bunnyhopping, and melee jousting... it can be one hell of a finger workout, especially if your good at it.
Eve is far more cerebral. You need to understand all the mechanics, the fits, and have experience with the situation to know what to do and when to do it. And Eve requires very little in the way of twitch skills.
It's kinda like comparing basketball & chess.
BTW, Darkfall is much less forgiving than Eve. For ever ship I lose in Eve, I probably die 20 times in Darkfall (and lose all my stuff in the process). Anyone that says otherwise has no idea what they are talking about.
Personally, I think Darkfall is a much better pure combat PvP game. But unfortunately its a sandbox that lacks tools ... which makes it shallow, especially compared to Eve.
*Darkfall graphics only suck if you have a crap computer. The environments are particularly well done.

Most of the things you listed have nothing to do with skill and sounds like a bad troll. But you are correct, you can't compare skills required in an FPS game with a game like EVE. If you want a skillful FPS though, stay away from **** MMOFPS and play a proper arena FPS like Quake. Greatest skill required.

Can't say I agree. You don't have eleventy billion keybinds and skills to deal with in an FPS. It's just twitch skills and map knowledge. The two games types are very different, and I'd consider Darkfall the harder game to get good at.
The only difference is, that in Darkfall you can mitigate your lack of twitch skill w/ higher skills & gear. But thats not really a factor when your going up against an equal opponent.

Yeh I guess it depends what you mean by skill. There are a higher level of skill of the players in Quake than Darkfall, so you need to be extremely good to be up with the top players. I wouldn't agree Darkfall is harder to get good at either. Sure, Quake maybe be easy(ish) to get mid-skilled, but becoming top-tier is impossible for most. And it requires more than twitch skills and map knowledge. Also, having more binds and "skills" doesn't make it a more skilled game. But we might have to agree to disagree ;) And I'm not saying Darkfall is easy, I'm just saying there more skill the Quake field (due to numbers, length of time playing etc).
