A couple of months ago, I was flying in some fleets with R.A.G.E Alliance. These fleets were sometimes large and would require tens to hundreds of pilots all jumping into a system at the same time. Well, I like the way EVE looks, and I like to zoom in on ships and on our fleet. As I was doing this one day, I hear the order to jump, so I do, and ZAP! My computer had completely shut itself off. Realizing I'd either be left behind or be unable to join the fight, I quickly reboot and get back in game, in fleet, and on comms. This happened again, and I realized I should zoom about before a mass jump. For a while I was OK, but then I was in another fleet. We warped to a POS for a Titan bridge, and I was zooming in, looking around, etc. We get the order to jump, and ZAP! My computer shuts off, and will no longer turn back on. The best I can manage from the power button is a second of power before going silent.
Just now, I borrowed a friend's power supply to test what was wrong, and it turns out that the power supply in my computer (a BFG Tech 650W, model BFGR650PSU) had died. To recap: Fleet jumps broke my power supply, and now I need to buy a new one if I'm ever to play EVE on my nice computer ever again, let alone recover all my data.

Computer manufacturers ALWAYS lowball power estimations. Do some research when you pick up a new one, and make sure your supply is slightly larger than what your system claims it needs.

To be honest, we had a customer who got four video cards replaced within a short period of time. We even replaced his computer, but the cards kept frying.
I was just about to contact the supplier of the cards when I noticed the patch notes for the upcoming Eve patch mentioning problems with video cards.
Applying the patch solved the problem.
Also, the OP's PSU has nothing to do with the stress the computer's components puts on it. If it can't handle the rest of the system at full load, it needs to be replaced with a more powerful one.

I remember something about a newer and infamous Nvidia driver killing video cards. If you kept putting identical video cards in the same system with the same driver, that could definitely happen. Not sure whether Eve is at fault directly in that case.

Changes to shader textures and modelling will no longer put excessive stress on older graphics cards. This means they will no longer overheat while players are docked in a station.
Can't remember which manufacturer it was, but it was a one-card AGP system, so SLI/Crossfire wasn't the culprit.

I wasn't actually intending to cause shenanigans or blame anything. I thought it was hilarious actually. Also, now wondering if anybody else had similar issues.

if we learn one thing playing EVE it's always to assume the worst of unknown people - especially if they try to appear nice.

Well, technically, the PSU not performing to self-claimed specs but you utilizing it as such is what fried your PSU. _

Even then it is a bad PSU for breaking. Even if it cannot deliver enough power it should not break from the power requirements if it cannot deliver it, it should just shut down.
Similar to GPUs breaking down when under alot of stress, a GPU should be able to run under max load permanently (granted will lower life expectancy, but that is not something that means it breaks in a few weeks). Even if it cannot, it should run into thermal protection and shut down, if it breaks it is a problem from the manufacturer.

Edited by: LiBraga on 09/11/2010 11:35:24 The only time EVE will kill your comp is... errr... oh it wont.
Main culprit is overheating when playing EVE, this is due to failing fans or poor ventilation in the system. My brothers comp died whilst playing EVE... but I thought it would... he had a habit of using it during thunderstorms without a surgeprotector. --------------- What! Yah. Risky to play during a storm, especially without a surge protector.
Few years back we had a nasty storm and I was still using my PC at the time. Had lightning strike just outside the house. Took a branch off a tree (luckily it didn't burn the whole tree). It didn't take anything out, as I was able to boot it up again after the storm; but as I recall, I had to replace a few components over the next few months as they began to fail. ------ "Tell a man there are 300 billion stars in the universe and he'll believe you. Sounds like you didn't have a surge protector hooked up, YOU underloaded your system.
