Is it worth resubbing to see the new WoW world? I used to play a long time ago and hated both expansions.

Edited by: Selinate on 14/11/2010 01:40:28 Cataclysm hasn't come out yet. December 7th, I believe it is? In any case, I don't think anyone can definitively tell you whether or not it's worth it, yet.
I must admit, the commercial tempted me to try WoW again for a while, however... I've learned my lesson. Until someone comes out with a fantasy MMO that has fundamentally different gameplay mechanics than the ones that everyone copies over and over again now, I refuse to play the current ones...

Edited by: Professor Tarantula on 14/11/2010 01:56:27 In a word, no.
Skilltrees and attributes have been dumbed down to an elementary school level, and everyone is obsessed with 'gearscore'. I haven't played in years now, but everything i hear about it gives me the impression the community and game itself managed to get even worse somehow.
I heard they're offering old accounts free time soon, hoping to lure them into buying the expansion and give their falling subsciber numbers a boost, so you might want to take advantage of that if no reason other than to remind you why you quit.
Correction, skilltrees are going to be dumbed down with Cataclysm. Smaller trees with less options, and you only get one point to spend every 2 levels. Crafting specializations are being removed. MP5 is being removed, and some other attribute crap. I can't be bothered to look into it further as it sickens me so.

I too considered it but decided not to for a couple of reasons. Tarantula of course has the same reasons I have, but I also gave away my accounts when I left WOW in 2007.
Cataclysm is a good name for that expansion. WOW is to MMOs what AOL was to having an online account and email. WOW has the unilateral market control that AOL once had long ago but competition put an end to that.
Even now with MMOs they are going to F2P and/or micro-transactions along with a kind of morphing with persistence across FPS games (same character on an account across different servers).
WOW may be known as the "last great MMO" before things changed but let it not be a considered a bad thing actually. I think that given the proliferation of the technology and the ease of model or content porting, creating MMOs is easy enough for smaller outfits. Therefore, like email and chat services that were once dominated by AOL, the future of MMOs is smaller games with smaller subscriber bases.
EvE Online, I think, represents the future of MMOs for being smaller, having a smaller but more die-hard base, and a being a community of sorts. DAoC became such an MMO over time as another example. It's a good thing really because there will be an MMO for everybody.
MMOs will also be cheaper or even free(er) in the future but how they would be paid for is pretty much defined in the way they are being paid for now, but I also think that there will be service provider kickback or affiliation programs in the future where you sign on with a service and they kick a few bucks of your service fee to a group of MMO providers that they are affiliated with, the premise being that you get the service to play an MMO, and therefore they have a customer because of those particular MMOs they affiliated with. Of course it would not be for an MMO as big and expensive as WOW, but like I said, in the future instead of WOW with 11 million plus players where will be scores of games like WOW with EvE-sized client bases for each.
Cataclysm is a good name, because it's the last hurrah, the last chapter of the Great MMO Saga and the beginning of the end. Historic it will be, and then there will be no more.

My opinion: resub, play through the solo content, do some group/raid content if you are into that sort of thing, and then cancel your account once you have been through the content.
WoW is a themepark game - play it as such. ----------

Thread derail for a sec.
I tried to play WOW a few years back. I lasted 15 mins before quitting.
I couldn't handle the graphics. The graphics hurt my eyes.
At the time I was on a dual-core computer with an 8800Gtx vid card with plenty of system ram.
1st. The graphics seemed cheap and drawn like 5 year olds were given crayons to work with. 2nd. The quests were boring.
Anyways. Am I right about the graphics?
I ended up playing Guild Wars instead cause I figured I'd get more or less the same experience and I could also play for free. It was a nice change of pace from Call of Duty or whatever racing game.

hmmm... WoW came out in 2004, and Blizzard games have always been made so that they would run on just about any reasonable computer made within the last 5 years, so if you came into a blizzard game expecting great graphics, then it's no wonder that you were disappointed. Never play a blizzard game for the graphics. That's just a rule of thumb...

Edited by: Lily Fair on 14/11/2010 03:48:04 I stopped playing WoW few weeks after TBC came out. Bought WotLK and played for 12 hours and never logged back in. Never will.
At this point, I wont try it ever again, because frankly my state of life is such that I'm afraid of the game. I might actually get back in to it and ruin the remainder of my life :P

since the last patch they sure made alot of changes. Also I feel it's unbalanced to F#$$ too. Cut it short I completely lost interest in the game. Hell even my wife hardly playing it and she loved it.

WoW will be like it always is
A few cool vids, deathwing saying something cool, Gnomes doing something gay
As for gameplay, every second of the game you play will be wasting because the next patch will have you farm the same bull****.
Music, as always blizzard win in this area, never had anything bad to say about the music
Overall, if you enjoy doing the same thing over and over each day and get little or no reward which will become pointless next month then you may as well play wow, ironically for some RL is already this

I played WOW solidly for 18 months from its launch. I loved playing a priest. But I burned out soon after the burning crusade expansion came out.
I tried Age of Conan. I really wanted to like it. But it's so clunky compared to WOW.
At the moment my alternative is playing Fallen Earth.

Why would class balance matter? Everyone can just get the new FOTM to max level with minimal effort.

I wouldn't call 100-120 hours to get to 85 (minimum) plus gearing up time "minimal effort". Not everyone has 30-40 hours of free time a week to spend on a video game, and even less people are willing to put in the time to find 'the optimal path'.

I would. Getting to max level in WoW is much, much, easier than any other MMO. And gets easier all the time. Don't they even have that recruit a friend thing which can be used to level at a ridiculous rate?
Gearing up time is irrelevant, and not what i'm talking about. But since you mentioned it, if you're in an active raiding guild you can start getting 'phat loots' handed to you right away.

120 hours to max level up a fresh toon in wow would be like getting into a max skill supercarrier at 2 months old. It's a broken mechanic thats simply a money grab on blizzards part.

played CoV for a while, it was okay.. Then Eve for 2.5 years, after burnout played DDO which was alright..
Then got into WOW cause all my friends were playing it.. but their obsession with gear, Gear, GEAR!! always puzzled me; right up til the moment that half of my party dropped out of a dungeon because the items they wanted weren't there.. that's when I said "screw you guys, I'm going home.."
But I remember hearing about a game called Pirates of the Burning Sea being similar to Eve..
Anybody here ever play that? How was it?

You don't even have to be in a raiding guild. I got quite well geared on my ret pally very, very quickly just by joining pug raids.

After what they pulled off with attempting to switch player profiles to use real names? Blizzard can just go and screw themselves, they've been swimming in money for too long and lost their minds...
How to PVP: 1. buy ISK with GTCs, 2. fit cloak, learn aggro mechanics, 3. buy second account for metagaming
