O.K. So I got suicide ganked coming out of Jita 4-4 the other day in my Mammoth, with a rather nice comment from one of the protagonists of "Hope you feel terrible"
[Mammoth, Mammoth High Sec] Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II
Invulnerability Field II Medium Shield Extender II Explosion Dampening Field II Photon Scattering Field II Catalyzed Cold-Gas I Arcjet Thrusters
Improved Cloaking Device II [empty high slot]
Medium Cargohold Optimization I Medium Cargohold Optimization I Medium Cargohold Optimization I
So this made me think a couple of things:
1. High Sec isn't as safe as I thought! 2. My witty comebacks really need some work to deal with such lovely comments
I use a Prowler for any low sec runs I need to do and indeed would normally from Jita with small cargos, but I wanted to ship a load of processed moon goo and thought my Mammy would be safe as it was high sec all the way. So here comes the Mastodon question.... should I tweak the Mammoth slightly (maybe 2 more medium shield extenders rather than the explosion and photon fields) and think of my self as unlucky or upgrade to the Mastadon (perhaps the below spec) or will I just be setting myself up for a higher loss next time (the 350 mil of cargo was enough thank you )
[Mastodon, High Sec Mastodon] Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II
Invulnerability Field II Large Shield Extender II Large Shield Extender II
[empty high slot]
Medium Cargohold Optimization II Medium Cargohold Optimization II
Let me know your thoughts people or just call me an imbecile or the like the choice is yours

If you are an Indy guy and can afford Transport Ships then I'd suggest you never fly the Tech 1 versions. If you're concerned about getting suicided after you undock from a station then a very well tanked Mastodon may keep you alive long enough until you can redock. Personally I'd stick with the Prowler for all jobs and sacrifice the cargo space. Speed is life. I always hit the microwarpdrive when I undock and then look for the warp point.

1. Don't buy a mastodon, your mammoth is much more cost-effective (and much less of a target) 2. 'Insta-undocks': A bookmark +- 1000km (more = better) from undock at (bussy) stations you visit often (jita 4-4 is a must)
NOBODY should EVER have to fly something as overpriced and useless as a mastodon.
High-sec: Mammoth Low-sec: Prowler 0.0: Prowler (with scout for teh bubblez)
Fit mammoth for max hauling and prowler for max agility&(warp)speed

if there wasn't the orca, I would slightly disagree with you since the mastodoon is more resistant to suicide ganks.
but, we have the orca now, and pretty much all DS transports became moot with it. ---

Use P4M1 when you undock or you deserve to die tbh.

A Mammoth will die to a single suicide Brutix, a Mastodon will not.

The only time someone ever locked my Mastadon in a WH, they apparently either: A) forgot that a single point won't hold one in place (Role bonus ftw), or B) Mistook it for a mammoth.
They looked very funny in their stealth bomber orbiting me while I aligned and warped out.

That Mastadon, assuming all V skills, has about 50k EHP and takes 18.1 seconds to align. 4-5 gank battleships and you'd still pop. If they're using artillery boats (like an Apoc with 1400mm Arty) with Republic Fleet Fusion L you drop down to 41k EHP and the Apocs are nearly 12k alpha.
Long and short of it, if anyone really wants to gank you, they can gank you. All you can do is make it harder.
1) Reduce the value of what you carry in one trip. On average, about half of what you carry will drop when your ship gets blown up. The gankers will be out some money on their ships (cost of hull and fittings less whatever the insurance pays out). So, if half what you're carrying is worth more than the loss on the ships they'll need to kill you, expect to die.
2) Don't fly afk. Never do this. If you have to leave the keyboard, dock up. Always warp-to-zero. Never use your autopilot.
3) Train for and fly an Orca. It has a 40,000 m3 corporate hangar, and if you're bringing ammo you can also toss it in ships in the 400,000 m3 ship maintenance bay to haul extra. Those two compartments cannot be scanned, and nothing in them will drop if the Orca does get destroyed, so there's no gain. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

Actually, do use autopilot. Just tell it to stop at each waypoint, and set every intermediate system to be a waypoint. That way, you can set autopilot when you tell it to warp to the next gate, and it will automatically jump for you, without trying to warp to 15 when it gets to the next system. Neat trick, huh?

There is a few (1 or 2) seconds lag after loading the system, so when I want to travel without paying attention I set the autopilot and then hit warp to zero for the next gate each time.

If by neat, you mean "More work that just flying manually" then yes, that's amazing! --Vel

Thanks for the answers guys
I think for now I will continue using my Prowler which does several things that you have mentioned i.e. reducing align times and reducing value of cargo due to sheer cargo capacity. Hell, for very small but high value items I may even use a shuttle
I'll also be creating a load of instas for those busy stations I use...I like the thought of never being caught (As far as I understand it you are ejected from the station at over 3/4 full speed, enough to warp?).
And all this while I train the skills for an Orca....so I'll let you know in what feels like far too many months if I'm just stupid/unlucky and get ganked a lot
